Activation of electrical machinery. Supplement 1. [Preliminary evaluation; not applicable to ground tests]

Description: The following analysis of the induced radioactivity in SNAP-50/SPUR electrical machinery having a high cobalt content is submitted. Induced radioactivity in the flight vehicle will contribute negligibly to allowable radiation levels. This is especially so due to the low neutron to gamma ratio of assumed radiation damage tolerances to semiconductors. A calculation to estimate the order of magnitude of induced radioactivity in cobalt is attached. The calculation is based on a best guess of the ne… more

Adenosinetriphosphate Cleavage During the G-Actin to F-Actin Transformation and the Binding of Adenosinetriphosphate to F-Actin

Description: Since the discovery of the Straub and Feuer as well as Laki et al. that ATP bound to G-actin is transformed to ADP and inorganic phosphate during polymerization of actin (1, 2), it has become increasingly clear that the chemical changes in the nucleotide are related to the change in the physical state of the protein. Barany, Biro, Molnar and Straub have shown that highly purified actin preparation free of any enzyme which would use ATP, ADP or AMP as a substrate still catalyze the breakdown of … more

AGS Performance and Plans

Description: The scope of the AGS complex has expanded rapidly during the three years since an accelerated beam was first obtained. Demand for research time far exceeds the amount available although facilities have been much increased. At the same time, experiments are being designed which are more complicated than previous ones and which make more stringent demands on the accelerator and on its auxiliary equipment. There is a continuous trend of experiments to particle beams of greater momentum, as the exp… more

Analysis of Vanadium in Milk Powder by Neutron Activation Analysis Using a Rapid Radiochemical Separation of 3.77-Minute Vanadium-52

Description: A procedure is described for the activation determination of V in powdered milk using 3.77-min V/sup 52/. The quantity of V in the sample is obtained by comparing the V/sup 52/ radioactivity found in the test sample with the V/sup 52/ radioactivity in a V comparator sample that is treated in the same manner as the test sample. The procedure can also be used for the determination of V in a variety of materials. (P.C.H.)

BEAM TRANSPORT CALCULATIONS USING GRAPHS

Description: The spread of a beam of particles can be represented by an ellipse in phase space, which represents the spread of the beam in both angle and distance. It is shown that the changes in this ellipse can be followed simply by graphical means, as the beam passes through an optical system consisting of thick and thin lenses and drift spaces. Such calculations are of value when an injected beam must be matched to an accelerator, or when a beam of particles from an accelerator must be transported to an… more

BETA RADIATION PROCESSING AT RIGOROUS CONDITIONS

Description: An investigation was conducted on the impossible use of beta radiation to promote chemical reactions at high temperatures and pressures. The advantages of beta sources over other radiation sources are enumerated. A radiation processing apparatus is described which allows operations to 10,000 psi and 500 deg C and uses 90 C of Sr/sup 90/-Y/sup 90/. The dosimetry of the source was accomplished with an iodineheptane system, and the mean dose rate within the chemical reactor was determined to be 0.… more

Beta Radiation Processing at Rigorous Conditions

Description: Introduction: The literature reflects ever expansive studies of radiation chemistry over the past twenty years However, in the application of radiation processing to chemical reactions, in general and excepting a few isolated cases, the yield of useful products have been so low as to preclude practical utilization. Thus, for many reactions, radiation alone at ambient conditions is not a sufficient agent for economical production. Hence, we are led to the investigation of radiation effects on … more

BREMSSTRAHLUNG IN A DENSE PLASMA

Description: The bremsstrahlung emitted by an electron scattered in a Coulomb field was first calculated by Bethe and Heitler. The total cross section for production of photons with wave number between k and k + dk by a nonrelativistic electron of kinetic energy {epsilon} is d{sigma}/dk dk = 16/3 Z{sup 2}r{sub 0}{sup 2} (e{sup 2}/hc) (mc{sup 2}/{epsilon})log ({radical} {epsilon}/hck + {radical} {epsilon}/hck -1) dk/k, where Ze is the charge of the (heavy) ion, and r{sub 0} is the classical electron radius. … more

CHARACTERISTICS OF A THERMIONIC CONVERTER WITH A HIGH-TEMPERATURE COLLECTOR

Description: Current-voltage characteristics of a cesium-on-tantalum thermionic converter with a collector temperature comparable to that of the emitter were obtained for a variety of electrode temperatures and cesium vapor pressures. The results show that for emitter temperatures in excess of 2000 deg K, power outputs of a few watts per square centimeter can be obtained when the ratio of collector temperature to emitter temperature is as high as 0.75 to 0.80, which is the required range for best performanc… more

COMPUTER DATA PROCESSING SYSTEM. PROJECT ROVER, 1962

Description: ABS>A system was created for processing large volumes of data from Project ROVER tests at the Nevada Test Site. The data are compiled as analog, frequency modulated tape, which is translated in a Packard-Bell Tape-to-Tape converter into a binary coded decimal (BCD) IBM 7090 computer input tape. This input tape, tape A5, is processed on the 7090 by the RDH-D FORTRAN-II code and its 20 FAP and FORTRAN subroutines. Outputs from the 7090 run are tapes A3, which is a BCD tape used for listing on the… more

Correlation of Liquid Fraction in Two-Phase Flow With Application to Liquid Metals

Description: A generalized correlation for the liquid fraction in twophase flow is presented which is proposed for use with all iluids, including liquid metals. The correlation is based on isothermal, two-phase, two-component liquid fraction data for liquid Hg--N/sub 2/ and water-air. Liquid fraction is shown to be a function of the Martinelli flow modulus and liquid/gas density and viscosity ratios. Good correspondence is indicated between the liquid fraction predicted by this correlation and the Martinell… more

Cytochemistry of Delayed Radionecrosis of the Murine Spinal Cord

Description: In the vast field of radiation pathology we find pathologists, anatomists, and even physiologists busily at work, but the radiobiologist is conspicuously absent, although, according to Zirkle (1959), this field is clearly within his domain. Perhaps it is wise to take this broad hint of the scientifically so well equipped radiobiologist and to stay clear from an area in which an incalculable array of variables makes clearcut experimentation a hopeless venture, a priori. Perhaps it would be bette… more

Development of Pulsed Neutron Application to Power Reactor Start-Up Procedures. Fifth Quarterly Progress Report, April 1-June 30, 1963

Description: Activities in a program to develop techniques in the use of pulsed neutron sources to measure shutdown parameters related to large thermal power reactors are reported. The development of pulsed neutron source techniques for large power reactors has led to a new theoretical model recently developed by E. Garelis and J.L. Russell, Jr. The theory is presently based on a bare, one-group model with m-delayed precursors and takes all spatial modes into account. Results indicate, however, that the app… more

A DISCUSSION AND BIBLIOGRAPHY OF CURRENT LITERATURE CONCERNING VAN ALLEN BELTS FOR USE IN SNAP SPACE ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES

Description: Discussion of theories on particle motion in electric and magnetic fields precedes examination of theories on the source of the inner and outer Van Allen belts. Theories for the inner belt propose solar cosmic ray injection and galactic cosmic ray injection as the source of the protons. Neutron albedo is particularly examined but seems to be unaccountable for the proton belt. Neutron albedo and injection from the sun are also considered as possible sources of the electrons in the outer belt. Fl… more
