6430.1A Compliance Matrix for 241-SY-101 Surface Level Rise Remediation Project

Description: Tank 241-SY-101 (SY-101) has recently exhibited a steady waste surface level growth. A path forward to mitigate the SY-101 surface level growth issue has been developed. The project has been directed to install the necessary equipment to transfer 380-570m{sup 3} (100,000-150,000 gallons) of waste from SY-101 to SY-102 before the waste elevation reached the region of the tank where the transition from a double to a single shell tank occurs. The purpose of this document is to record the design at… more

Achieving Finite Element Mesh Quality via Optimization of the Jacobian Matrix Norm and Associated Quantities, Part 1 - A Framework for Surface Mesh Optimization

Description: Structured mesh quality optimization methods are extended to optimization of unstructured triangular, quadrilateral, and mixed finite element meshes. N"ew interpretations of well-known nodally-bssed objective functions are made possible using matrices and matrix norms. The matrix perspective also suggests several new objective functions. Particularly significant is the interpretation of the Oddy metric and the Smoothness objective functions in terms of the condition number of the metric tensor … more

After-burning of nitropenta products in a calorimeter

Description: Explored here are the ''after-burning'' effects for explosions of Nitropenta (NP) charges in air. Detonation of the charge transforms the solid explosive ( C HNO 5 8412 , also known as PETN) into gaseous products that are rich in carbon and CO, which subsequently act as a fuel. When these hot ({approximately}3500 K) gases mix with air, rapid combustion (after-burning) takes place. The dynamics of this exothermic process was studied in ''pressure calorimeter'' experiments performed at EMI.

Airlift Recirculation Well Final Report - Southern Sector

Description: Chlorinated solvents used in the A/M-Area at the Savannah River Site (SRS) from 1952-1982 have contaminated the groundwater under the site. To comply with the requirements of the current SCDHEC Part B Permit, this plume is being addressed by a multi-phase program under the direction of the Environmental Restoration Division at SRS. This report details the first phase of this program, the containment of the portion of the plume greater than 500 ppb (TCE) within the Southern Sector of the A/M Are… more

Analysis of Breakthrough Profiles Based on Gamma Ray Emission Along Loaded Packed Bed Columns: Comparative Evaluation of Ionsiv IE-911 and Chabazite Zeolite for the Removal of Radiostrontium and Cesium from Groundwater

Description: A gamma counting system has been assembled that can profile the breakthrough fronts of gamma-emitting radioisotopes longitudinally and axially along a loaded column. This profiling technique has been particularly useful in columns studies such as those performed with IONSP IE-911, a crystalline silicotitanate (CST) manufactured by UOP, in which unusually long operating times are required to observe cesium breakthrough in column effluent. The length of the mass transfer zone and extent of column… more

AP-102/104 Retrieval control system qualification test procedure

Description: This Qualification Test Procedure documents the results of the qualification testing that was performed on the Project W-211, ''Initial Tank Retrieval Systems,'' retrieval control system (RCS) for tanks 241-AP-102 and 241-AP-104. The results confirm that the RCS has been programmed correctly and that the two related hardware enclosures have been assembled in accordance with the design documents.

Application of a prognostic model validation system to real-time dispersion modeling

Description: The Atmospheric Release Advisory Capability (ARAC) at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory uses the U.S. Navy's Coupled Ocean/Atmosphere Mesoscale Prediction System (COAMPS) to supply high-resolution wind data for use in its real-time dispersion modeling system. ARAC has used COAMPS products to support several events and exercises, and COAMPS forecasts appear accurate, based on qualitative examination. Recently ARAC has developed a quantitative verification system which calculates COAMPS … more

Applications of the RHIC AC Dipoles and Their Expected Performance

Description: Two AC dipoles with horizontal and vertical oscillating magnetic fields will be installed in RHIC. They will provide coherent oscillations for beam dynamic studies and betatron function measurements. The AC dipole with horizontal magnetic field will also be used to induce a full spin flip for RHIC polarized proton experiments. This note discusses the applications of the AC dipoles in RHIC and their expected parameters

AX Tank farm process impacts study

Description: This study provides facility and process concepts and costs for partial decontamination of the most heavily contaminated debris from the demolition of the four AX tanks and ancillary equipment items. This debris would likely be classified as high-level and/or remote handle TRU waste based on source and radiological inventory. A process flow sheet was developed to treat contaminated metal wastes such as pipes and tank liners as well as contaminated concrete and the residual waste and grout left … more

Beam Line and First Vessel Wall Shielding in HYLIFE-II

Description: The present Heavy Ion Driver design for HYLIFE-II requires 96 beams from each side, or a total of 192 beams. The beams are separated from each other, at present, by an angle of 4.25 degrees. Two sets of Flibe (molten Salt) jets, 90 degrees apart, are used for x-ray and neutron shielding of the first vessel wall. Space between jets result in no shielding of each beam tube and a surrounding rectangular area of vessel wall. A vortex shielding device is proposed to provide this additional required … more

Bent Superconducting Solenoids for the Muon Cooling Experiment

Description: This report describes some solenoid design work done for the cooling experiment for the muon collider collaboration. This report describes an analysis section of superconducting solenoids that have a center line induction of 3.0 T. The section is bent in the shape of an S. Each bend in the S bends the muon beam one radian (57.3 degrees). The warm bore diameter of the solenoid bent solenoid is 300 to 320 mm. The radius of the bend at the solenoid center line is 1000 mm. This report shows the res… more

Biomass cofiring: A renewable alternative for utilities and their customers

Description: Cofiring biomass with coal has environmental advantages, including reducing greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and acid rain precursors such as sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. Over the last decade, electric utilities across the country have implemented biomass cofiring in demonstrations and in commercial operations. As a result of this experience, information is now available on the technical and economic performance of cofiring biomass with coal.

BSCCO superconductors : hole-like fermi surface and doping dependence of the gap function.

Description: We use the gradient of the energy-integrated angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) intensity in order to define precisely the Fermi surface (FS) in BSCCO superconductors. We show that, independent of the photon energy, the FS is a hole barrel centered at ({pi},{pi}), Then, the superconducting gap along the FS is precisely determined from ARPES measurements on over-doped and underdoped samples of Bi2212. As the doping decreases, the maximum gap increases, but the slope of the gap near the nodes d… more

Calibration Procedures for a Two-Modulator Generalized Ellipsometer

Description: A Two-Modulator Generalized Ellipsometer (2-MGE) has been extremely useful in characterizing optical properties of uniaxial bulk materials, thin films and diffraction gratings. The instrument consists of two polarizer-photoelastic modulator pairs, one operating as the polarization state generator and the other as the polarization state detector. Each photoelastic modulator operates at a different remnant frequency (such as 50 kHz and 60 kHz), making it possible to measure eight elements of the … more

Carbon Sequestered, Carbon Displaced and the Kyoto Context

Description: The integrated system that embraces forest management, forest products, and land-use change impacts the global carbon cycle - and hence the net emission of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide - in four fundamental ways. Carbon is stored in living and dead biomass, carbon is stored in wood products and landfills, forest products substitute in the market place for products made from other materials, and forest harvests can be used wholly or partially to displace fossil fuels in the energy sector. I… more
