Transient Temperature Variations During the Self-Heating of a Plasma by Thermonuclear Reactions

Description: Abstract: "The possibility of transient temperature variations during the self-heating of a plasma by thermonuclear reactions was investigated. Calculations were performed on an IBM Card Program Calculator. Estimates of the time scale for self-heating were obtained. It was concluded that it would be unsafe to assume that the nuclear temperature is always equal to or greater than the electron temperature in a discussion of plasma instabilities for a plasma with 10 percent or greater tritium conc… more

Transient Temperatures in Infinite Plates, Infinite Cylinders, and Spheres During Convective Cooling from Initially Parabolic Temperature Profiles

Description: Report presenting "the evaluations of the series which represent the solutions to the Fourier equation in rectangular, cylindrical and spherical coordinates for the case in which the initial temperature field is that owing to a spatially uniform heat source" (p. 1).

Two-Phase Pressure Losses Quarterly Progress Report: Sixth Quarter, May 12, 1963 - August 12, 1963

Description: Technical report describing that the pressure drops along 3/4-inch, 1-inch, and 1-1/4 inch straight pipes and across three contraction-expansion inserts in a 1-inch pipe have been measured under both single- and two-phase flow conditions. Pressure was varied from 600 to 1400 psia, flow from 0.25 x 10(6) to 1.66 x 10(6) lb/hr ft, and quality from zero to 90 percent. The single-phase pipe friction factor agrees with the Moody value for smooth pipe. The two-phase friction for horizontal flow shows… more

Type 316 Stainless Steel, Inconel, and Haynes Alloy No. 25 Natural-Circulation Boiling-Potassium Corrosion Test Loops

Description: Report issued by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory discussing natural-circulation corrosion test loops. As stated in the abstract, "an investigation was undertaken to determine the compatibility of conventional nickel, iron, and cobalt-base high-temperature alloys with boiling potassium. The tests were designed to obtain quantitative information on the dissolution of the container alloys by condensing potassium and the subsequent deposition of solute in the subcooled liquid region of the test d… more

U-10 Wt % Mo Fuel Element: Irradiation in SRE

Description: From abstract: The fuel element assembly was successfully irradiated in the SRE to a maximum burnup of 5300 Mwd/MTU, at a peak fission rate of approximately 1.5 x 10E13 fissions/cm3-sec and a maximum central temperature near 1200F.

UC Fuel Element Design and Fabrication

Description: Abstract: Uranium monocarbide shows considerable potential for use as a fuel in high temperature, high power density, nuclear power reactors. As Atomics International is proposing its use in sodium graphite type reactors, it was necessary to develop a process for fabricaing sodium bonded uranium carbide fuel elements.

Ultramicro Methods in Biochemistry: [Part] 5. A Comparison of the Ultramicro Determination of Phosphorus Using N-Phenyl-p-Phenylenediamine or 1-Amino-2-Naphthol-4-Sulfonic Acid, [Part] 6. The Determination of Serum Alkaline Phosphatase

Description: From Introduction: "The following report describes an ultramicro procedure using ANSA as reducing agent. The method is a modification of the method of Kaser and Baker (4). Results obtained with this method are compared to results obtained with the procedure of Dryer, Tammes, and Routh (2) adapted for ultamicro analysis (3). The latter method uses N-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (NPPD) as the reducing agent."

Ultramicro Methods in Biochemistry: [Part] 7. The Determination of Plasma or Serum Urea Nitrogen, [Part] 8. The Determination of Serum Uric Acid, [Part] 9. The Determination of Serum Creatinine

Description: From Introduction: "This report describes the development of an ultramicro modification of the method of Chaney and Marbach which is reliable and remarkably suited to routine analysis in bulk."

An Ultrasonic System for Testing Isotope Heat Capsules

Description: Introduction: This report describes a program to develop a nondestructive (ultrasonic) tester and testing procedure to perform integrity tests on isotope heat source containers. The increased application of isotope heat sources has brought more attention to the engineering problems encountered during fabrication. One of the most important of these problems is insuring the isotope containment during the long unattended periods of use. To determine the integrity of the heat source container, a no… more

Uniformly Reactive Uranium Dioxide from a Single Oxidation-Reduction Cycle

Description: Abstract: By use of a modified thermobalance and reactor as the primary experimental tool for sample preparation and evaluation, a process has been developed by which parent uranium feed materials of a widely variable reactivity and composition may be converted to a uniformly reactive uranium dioxide.
