The 239 Pu(n,2n)238Pu cross section: preliminary calculations

Description: The primary motivation for the present work is to provide theoretical values for the ratio of the partial 239Pu(n,2nx{gamma})238Pu to total 239 Pu(n,2n)238Pu cross section for several discrete gamma transitions. Results and conclusions of preliminary calculations from threshold to 20 MeV are presented. Calculations are based on theoretical models with parameters obtained from the literature or from our ad hoc systematics. Optical model cross sections … more

Absorbance and Photoluminescence of Si, Ge, and MoS2 Nanoparticles Studied by Liquid Chromatography

Description: The authors have successfully synthesized highly crystalline, size-selected indirect band-gap nanocrystals (NC) of Si, Ge and MoS{sub 2} in the size range 2-10 nm in inverse micelles and studied their optical absorption and photoluminescence (PL) properties using liquid chromatography. Room temperature, visible PL from these nanocrystals was demonstrated in the range 700-350 nm (1.8-3.5 eV). their experimental results are interpreted in terms of the corresponding electronic structure of the bul… more

Acceptance and Operational Test Report for Neutron and Gamma Probe Application to Tank 241-SY-101 MITs

Description: This Operational Test Report (OTR) presents the results of the ATP/OTP testing performed to verify that newly procured neutron and gamma probes (reduced diameter design modifications) for operation in the Tank 241-SY-101 MITs are compatible with existing LOW van instrumentation and hardware. This verification was accomplished and a set of moisture data versus elevation were obtained from the Tank 241-SY-101 MITs as part of this testing program.

Accessibillity of Electron Bernstein Modes in Over-Dense Plasma

Description: Mode-conversion between the ordinary, extraordinary and electron Bernstein modes near the plasma edge may allow signals generated by electrons in an over-dense plasma to be detected. Alternatively, high frequency power may gain accessibility to the core plasma through this mode conversion process. Many of the tools used for ion cyclotron antenna de-sign can also be applied near the electron cyclotron frequency. In this paper, we investigate the possibilities for an antenna that may couple to el… more

ACRV instrumentation plan for NMD HTK light gas gun tests

Description: In support of the NMD Hit-To-Kill Program for the US Army, twenty scaled tests on simulated nuclear targets are planned. The AEDC Light Gas Gun operated by Sverdrup Technology (SVT) in Tullahoma, TN will launch the scaled NMD projectile into scaled targets. The target for all the tests is a 1/4-scale version of the Attitude Controlled Re-Entry Vehicle (ACRV). The targets were designed and fabricated by Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). ITT Sys… more

Aluminum powder metallurgy processing

Description: The objective of this dissertation is to explore the hypothesis that there is a strong linkage between gas atomization processing conditions, as-atomized aluminum powder characteristics, and the consolidation methodology required to make components from aluminum powder. The hypothesis was tested with pure aluminum powders produced by commercial air atomization, commercial inert gas atomization, and gas atomization reaction synthesis (GARS). A comparison of the GARS aluminum powders with the com… more

The analysis of aqueous mixtures using liquid chromatography-electrospray mass spectrometry

Description: The focus of this dissertation is the use of chromatographic methods coupled with electrospray mass spectrometry (ES-MS) for the determination of both organic and inorganic compounds in aqueous solutions. The combination of liquid chromatography (LC) methods and ES-MS offers one of the foremost methods for determining compounds in complex aqueous solutions. In this work, LC-ES-MS methods are devised using ion exclusion chromatography, reversed phase chromatography, and ion exchange chromatograp… more

Analysis of historical gross gamma logging data from BX tank farm

Description: Gross gamma ray logs, recorded from January 1975 through mid-year 1994 as part of the Single-Shell Tank Farm Dry Well Surveillance Program, have been reanalyzed for the BX tank farm to locate the presence of mobile radionuclides in the subsurface. This report presents the BX tank farm gross gamma ray data in such a way as to assist others in their study of vadose zone mechanism.

Analysis of Interlayer Shorts in a 0.5 {micro}m CMOS IC Technology

Description: Sandia is manufacturing CMOS ICs with 0.5 {micro}m LOCOS and shallow trench isolation (STI) technologies and is developing a 0.35 {micro}m SOI technology. A program based on burn-in and life tests is being used to qualify the 0.5 {micro}m technologies for delivery of high reliability ICs to customers for military and space applications. Representative ICs from baseline wafer lots are assembled using a high reliability process with multilayer hermetic, ceramic packages. These ICs are electricall… more

Analysis of Two Biomass Gasification/Fuel Cell Scenarios for Small-Scale Power Generation

Description: Two scenarios were examined for small-scale electricity production from biomass using a gasifier/fuel cell system. In one case, a stand-alone BCL/FERC gasifier is used to produce synthesis gas that is reformed and distributed through a pipeline network to individual phosphoric acid fuel cells. In the second design, the gasifier is integrated with a molten carbonate fuel cell stack and a steam bottoming cycle. In both cases, the gasifiers are fed the same amount of material, with the integrated … more

An Assessment of the Disposal of Petroleum Industry NORM in Nonhazardous Landfills

Description: In this study, the disposal of radium-bearing NORM wastes in nonhazardous landfills in accordance with the MDEQ guidelines was modeled to evaluate potential radiological doses and resultant health risks to workers and the general public. In addition, the study included an evaluation of the potential doses and health risks associated with disposing of a separate NORM waste stream generated by the petroleum industry--wastes containing lead-210 (Pb-210) and its progeny. Both NORM waste streams are… more

Automatic Visualization of Software Requirements: Reactive Systems

Description: In this paper we present an approach that facilitates the validation of high consequence system requirements. This approach consists of automatically generating a graphical representation from an informal document. Our choice of a graphical notation is statecharts. We proceed in two steps: we first extract a hierarchical decomposition tree from a textual description, then we draw a graph that models the statechart in a hierarchical fashion. The resulting drawing is an effective requirements ass… more

Beam-Beam Collisions and Crossing Angles in RHIC

Description: This paper evaluates the strength of head on and parasitic beam-beam collisions in RHIC when the crossing angle is zero. A non-zero crossing angle is not required in normal operation with 120 bunches, thanks to the early separation of the two beams. The RHIC lattice is shown to easily accommodate even conservatively large crossing angles, for example in beam dynamics studies, or in future operational upgrades to as many as 360 bunches per ring. A modest loss in luminosity is incurred when gold … more
