Cross Sections for OCUSOL-A Program

Description: The OCUSOL-A program (ORNL-CF-57-6-4) for Univac is a modification of the Eyewash (ORNL-1925) multi-group, multi-region reactor code. The group=energy-lethargy-temperature relationship are given in Table A. The element code numbers are given in Table B. The cross sections now on the sigma-tape are given in tables in the Appendix numbered with the element code number. This technical report explains the bases for choosing the cross sections.

Delay Time Prior to Dumping the HRT

Description: Some refined calculations have been made, relative to a proposed delay prior to a dump, to determine the expected D2 concentration in the vent stream from the pressurizer gas bleeds during a dump of the Homogeneous Reactor Test (HRT). These calculations indicate that for vent valves have a Cv of 0.07 (venting time from 2000 psia to D2O saturation pressure of approximately 12 minutes), a delay period is not required since the D2 concentration is well below lower explosive limit. Determination of Submicron Particle Sized by an Activation Analysis - Centrifugation Method

Description: The feasibility of determining particle sizes in the submicron range by employing an activation analysis - centrifugation method has been demonstrated. It is believed that this method is now applicable to the analysis of thorium oxide for submicron particles. The same techniques are, in most instance, usable in determining particle sized in other sample materials.

Determination of Trace Amounts of Sulfur in Fluoride Salts

Description: A method has been developed for the determination of total sulfur in fluoride salts using the methylene blue procedure. Reduction of sulfate to hydrogen sulfide is achieved through the use of a new reducing mixture consisting of stannous chloride dissolved in concentrated phosphoric acid. The new mixture is effective on microgram amounts of sulfate and offers a major advantage over the red phosphorous reducing mixtures in that larger samples may be taken for analysis. Dynamic Corrosion Screening Tests on Inconel and Nickel in NaCl-MgCl2-UCl3 Bath

Description: Nickel is more susceptible to mass transfer in a 100hr non-isothermal dynamic corrosion system than is Inconel when exposed to a NaCl-MgCl2-UCl3 (50.0-33.3-16.0 mole %) bath at a hot zone temperature 1800 F. No nickel mass transfer was observed in a 500-hr test at 1350 F, but Inconel showed some attack under these conditions. Effect of Core Corrosion Sample Assembly on HRT Critical Concentration

Effect of HRT Core Sample Holder Upon Core Flow Pattern and Pressure Drop

Description: The measured pressure drop across the reactor core, with the sample holder in place, is 6.9 psi, more than twice the estimated value. Better estimates, based on more rigorous mathematical analysis, should be possible for future problems of this type. Description: It has been reported in the literature that prolonged soaking of 16 wt & uranium-aluminum alloys at elevated temperatures induces a microstructural changed termed "conglobulation". this process is essentially a spheroidization of the UAl4 eutectic. Conclusions of the tests: (1) Extended soaking of 48 wt $ uranium-aluminum alloy billets at 600 C does not improve their hot-rolling characteristics. Description: Calculations indicate that it is impossible, even at high oxygen injection rates, to insure an excess of oxygen in the HRT fuel solution if the bubble letdown rate is more than 1 or 2 liters per minute. Estimated Gamma Radiation Levels at Access Holes in the HRT Shielding

Description: An estimate has been made of the gamma radiation levels at access holes in the HRT Shielding when the plugs have been removed to service or maintain the reactor. In every case the radiation level at the holes was greater than the maximum permissible exposure rate of 0.3 roentgens per week. Description: Few data exist for the thermal conductivity and viscosity of gases at very high pressure. The possibility of using gases for heat transfer media at pressures up to 100 atmospheres and above raised the problem of estimating variations in the conductivity and viscosity at high pressure. Generalized plots are presented which are based on the work of Enskog, Eucken, and Hirschfelder et al. Some pertinent data from Hirschfelder et al and from Hilsenrath et al are presented.

Description: Preliminary results of tests wit the Westinghouse 100A pump indicate that Al2)3 and tungsten carbide coated bearing-journal assemblies prepared by the Linde process are not promising as substitutes for the graphitar-stellite combination. The front Al2O3 assembly failed at start-up with water and both front and rear tungsten carbide assemblies failed after 121 hours with water at 245 C.

Evaluation of Loop Components and Admixed Thorium-3% Uranium Oxide Slurry in 200A Loop (Summary of Run 200A-10)

Description: A slurry addition system, a venturi in the circulation loop, and two types of sampling systems were tested with 500 and 800 g Th/kg H2O slurries in the 200 gpm loop at 250 C and 1000 psig. The addition system worked satisfactorily while the venturi gave erratic readings during part of the run.
