NON-DESTRUCTIVE ANALYSIS OF URANIUM IN GRAPHITE FUEL ELEMENTS BY NEUTRON ACTIVATION

Description: A method is presented for the determination of uranium (as U/sup 238/) in uraniuni-loaded graphite fuel elenients by a non-destructive, direct radioactivity analysis technique. A 200-cbannel pulse-height analyzer, equipped with a 3 in. x 3 in. NaI(Tl) crystal, is used to measure the Np/sup 239/ radioactivity of the neutron-irradiated samples. SMALL-SCALE IMPACT SENSITIVITY TESTING ON EDC37

Description: EDC37 was tested at LLNL to determine its impact sensitivity in the LLNL's drop hammer system. The results showed that impact sensitivities of the samples were between 86 cm and 156 cm, depending on test methods. EDC37 is a plastic bonded explosive consisting of 90% HMX, 1% nitrocellulose and binder. We recently conducted impact sensitivity testing in our drop hammer system and the results are presented in this report.

Corrosion tests of DWPF recycle solution

Description: Coupon immersion tests were performed on ASTM A537, Class 1 carbon steel in simulated Defense Waste Processing Facility recycle solutions at 93 [plus minus] 2[degree]C, in an effort to reproduce the results of earlier tests in which hard, shock-sensitive deposits were found. There was no evidence of pitting corrosion on the coupons exposed to solutions containing 0.5 M hydroxide and 2000 ppm (0.043 M) nitrite. Analysis of E-N loadings

Description: Three E-N loaded tubes were dissolved, sampled and analyzed, starting November 9, 1960. Measurement of plutonium and americium volatilities under thermal process conditions. Final report

Description: We have used the transpiration method to measure volatilities of Pu and Am from PuO{sub 2}(s) and PuO{sub 2}/2% AmO{sub 2}(s) in the presence of steam and oxygen at temperatures of 1230--1430 K. We find the volatile species to be PuO{sub 2}(OH){sub 2}(g) and AmO{sub 2}(OH){sub 2}(g) at vapor pressures on the order of 10{sup {minus}10} atm and 10 {sup {minus}12} atm respectively under measurement conditions.
