The Computational Modeling of Alloys:From ab initio and thermodynamics to heterogeneous precipitation.

Description: In this lecture we presented a methodology to obtain free energies from empirical potentials and applied it to the study of the phase diagram of FeCr. Subsequently, we used Metropolis Monte Carlo to analyze homogeneous and heterogeneous precipitation of the Cr rich solid solution {alpha}{prime}. These examples are part of our work in the area of steels for nuclear applications and can be found in several publications of our group cited as References.

Four Papers by the Supernova Cosmology Project

Description: Our search for high-redshift Type Ia supernovae discovered, in its first years, a sample of seven supernovae. Using a 'batch' search strategy, almost all were discovered before maximum light and were observed over the peak of their light curves. The spectra and light curves indicate that almost all were Type Ia supernovae at redshifts z = 0.35 - 0.5. Nanoparticle Based Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

Description: Surface-enhanced Raman scattering is a powerful tool for the investigation of biological samples. Following a brief introduction to Raman and surface-enhanced Raman scattering, several examples of biophotonic applications of SERS are discussed. The concept of nanoparticle based sensors using SERS is introduced and the development of these sensors is discussed.

Experimental determination of drag coefficients in low-density polyurethane foam

Description: We describe several experiments performed at the LLNL Site 300 firing range and on the LLNL 1/3 scale gun to investigate the deceleration of small projectiles (l {approx} 3-5 [mm]) in low-density foam ({rho} {approx} 0.08-0.32 [g/cm{sup 3}]). Low-Lying Dirac Eigenmodes, Topological Charge Fluctuations and the Instanton Liquid Model

Description: The local structure of low-lying eigenmodes of the overlap Dirac operator is studied. It is found that these modes cannot be described as linear combinations of 't Hooft ''would-be'' zeromodes associated with instanton excitations that underly the Instanton Liquid Model. This implies that the instanton liquid scenario for spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in QCD is not accurate. Novel structural phenomena at the maximum T{sub c} in 123 and HgBa{sub 2}CuO{sub 4+{delta}} superconductors : evidence for a structural response that competes with superconductivity.

Description: Structural distortions that compete with superconductivity have been investigated in two systems where oxygen content can be used to vary the doping continuously from the under doped state, through the maximum T{sub c} into the over doped state. Ion-Beam-Induced Defects and Defect Interactions in Perovskite-Structure Titanates

Description: Ion-beam irradiation of perovskite structures results in the production and accumulation of defects. Below a critical temperature, irradiation also leads to a crystalline-to-amorphous transformation.
