105-N charge-discharge rates

Description: Figures have and can be generated that indicate a higher charge-discharge rate if required before 105-N will be comparable with existing reactors. Also, these figures show an apparent operating cost incentive to increase the charge-discharge rates proposed for 105-N. Although these figures may be true by themselves, other figures developed from the same information and stated on a basis that affords a true comparison, show that the proposed rates for 105-N are compatible with those in existing … more

Absorption Spectra of Plutonium and Impurity Ions in Nitric Acid Solution

Description: The absorption spectra for Pu(III), (IV), (VI), and the red Pu(IV)- peroxy complex were determined in HNO/sub 3/ solution. Extinction coefficients for the above species of Pu were measured. Temperature has little effect on the spectra, but variation of acidity causes shifting of absorption peaks and some changes in the extinction coefficients. The absorption spectra and extinction coefficients in the region 390 to 1200 m mu were measured for chromic, nickelous, manganous, calcium, lanthanum, al… more

Application of neutron monitors to process control in Recuplex. Status report

Description: A program was. initiated early in 1957 to develop a neutron monitor capable of detecting plutonium (Pu) concentration in process vessels in Recuplex. This followed an earlier application by Finished Products Operation and Research and Engineering of neutron monitoring to powder counting which had been successful and was being regularly used. The process vessel monitoring was to be done by the ``in tank probe`` method, utilizing the monitored solution as its own-moderator, and detecting the resu… more

B, D, F, DR, H reactor new aluminum HCR concept: Temperature study

Description: The horizontal control rods presently installed in the older Hanford Reactors have inadequate heat transfer characteristics for present and predicted future operation of the reactors. Continued graphite stack distortion, coupled with higher graphite temperatures, has resulted in ECR failure during reactor operation, such as swelling of the outer aluminum sheaths to the extent that rod movement in the graphite channel is severely restricted. Continued graphite stack distortion will tend to furth… more

Building 313 operations

Description: On June 3 the writer was detailed to the 300 Area to study operations in Bldg, 313. Seven days were spent with C shift in the caning and dipping area. In this period, a system of coordinating press cycles was developed to utilize machine time most effectively. Subsequently, a brief amount of time was spent working in a design of the can cleaning area so as to incorporate the aluminum can etching operation and facilitate the handling and flow of materials. The next stage of perhaps a week was de… more

Calculations on close-coupled processing for Pu-238 recovery

Description: Irradiation of Np-237 in Hanford reactors and recovery of the Pu-238 product in a close-coupled separations plant is currently of interest. Such a concept has the potential of increasing in Pu-238 production rates. The results of initial calculations on the subject are presented herein to aid further study and evaluation. Much of the information is presented in terms of the aqueous target system proposed in earlier work (i.e., irradiation and processing of an aqueous neptunium solution). Howeve… more

CGI-844: 100-K coolant back-up system scope requirements

Description: Several decisions regarding basic project philosophy must be made in order to proceed with scope design and the preparation of equipment procurement specifcations. The purpose of this document is to present as much pertinent data as possible to allow the project representatives to become familiar with the problems involved. A meeting of Representatives is planned for the near future after receipt of project authorization to discuss the scope of this project and its relationship to CG-775. Emerg… more

Chemical Processing Department monthly report, June 1957

Description: Purex and Redox plants operated satisfactorily. Pu production exceeded commitments. The continuous calciners in UO{sub 3} plant experienced difficulty, but the monthly commitment was exceeded. Capital costs for conversion of B plant to recover Cs and Ce have increased. For future processing of E metal, several 3-ton batches were dissolved in Redox. The continuous Task I prototype is being tested for startup of production facilities. Redox product solutions generally have higher waste losses tha… more

Chemical Processing Department monthly report, June 1959

Description: Production of Pu from separations plants and output of unfabricated Pu exceeded commitments. Purex plant set a new record high for U processed. Production and shipments of UO{sub 3} met schedules. Purex solvent extraction battery performed below normal, probably because of poor solvent quality. NaOH addition to Redox coating removal waste is being reduced. A 3fold improvement in Recuplex product Al impurity was achieved by means of a specific gravity difference > 0.15 between dilute aqueous fee… more
