Pressure-dependent photoluminescence study of ZnO nanowires

Description: The pressure dependence of the photoluminescence (PL) transition associated with the fundamental band gap of ZnO nanowires has been studied at pressures up to 15 GPa. ZnO nanowires are found to have a higher structural phase transition pressure around 12 GPa as compared to 9.0 GPa for bulk ZnO. The pressure-induced energy shift of the near band-edge luminescence emission yields a linear pressure coefficient of 29.6 meV/GPa with a small sublinear term of -0.43 meV/GPa{sup 2}. An effective hydros… more

Amorphous diamond-like carbon film growth by KrF- and ArF- excimer laser PLD: Correlation with plume properties

Description: A comparative study of ArF- and KrF-laser deposition of amorphous diamond-like carbon (DLC) films and relevant carbon plasmas has been performed. Spectroscopic ellipsometry and EELS analysis of the DLC films deposited on Si <100> and NaCl substrates were utilized to characterize the high quality ArF- and KrF-laser deposited films (up to 84% of sp{sup 3} bonded carbon in 7 J/cm{sup 2} -ArF-laser DLC film). Gated ICCD imaging, luminescence and ion current probe diagnostics of the carbon plume hav… more

Experimental studies of photon-surface interaction dynamics in the alkali halides

Description: We describe recent measurements which have provided, in unprecedented detail, insights into the electronic mechanisms through which energy carried into a material by photon irradiation is absorbed, localized and rechanneled to produce desorption, surface modification, erosion and damage. The specific object of these studies has been desorption induced by electronic transition in alkali halide crystals, with particular emphasis on the dynamics of changes in the surface and near-surface regions. … more

Program RELAX: A code designed to calculate atomic relaxation spectra of x-rays and electrons

Description: The code RELAX is designed to calculate atomic relaxation spectra of X-rays and electrons due to bound-bound transitions. This calculation is based on the atomic transition data contained in the Livermore Evaluated Atomic Data Library (EADL). The results produced by this code for fluorescence yield vs. atomic number (Z) have been published in Tables and Graphs of Atomic Subshell and Relaxation Data Derived from the LLNL Evaluated Atomic Data Library (EADL), z = 1--100{double prime}, UCRL-50400,… more

Single molecule detection using charge-coupled device array technology

Description: A technique for the detection of single fluorescent chromophores in a flowing stream is under development. This capability is an integral facet of a rapid DNA sequencing scheme currently being developed by Los Alamos National Laboratory. In previous investigations, the detection sensitivity was limited by the background Raman emission from the water solvent. A detection scheme based on a novel mode of operating a Charge-Coupled Device (CCD) is being developed which should greatly enhance the di… more
