Geochemical orientation survey of stream sediment, stream water, and ground water near uranium prospects, Monticello area, New York. National Uranium Resource Evaluation Program

Description: A detailed geochemical test survey has been conducted in a 570 sq km area around six small copper-uranium prospects in sandstones of the Devonian Catskill Formation near Monticello in southern New York state. This report summarizes and interprets the data for about 500 stream sediment samples, 500 stream water samples, and 500 ground water samples, each analyzed for 40 to 50 elements. The groundwater samples furnish distinctive anomalies for uranium, helium, radon, and copper near the mineraliz… more

Multi-grid and ICCG for problems with interfaces

Description: Computation times for the multi-grid (MG) algorithm, the incomplete Cholesky conjugate gradient (ICCG) algorithm (J. Comp. Phys. 26, 43-65 (1978); Math. Comp. 31, 148-162 (1977)), and the modified ICCG (MICCG) algorithm (BIT 18, 142-156 (1978)) to solve elliptic partial differential equations are compared. The MICCG and ICCG algorithms are more robust than the MG for general positive definite systems. A major advantage of the MG algorithm is that the structure of the problem can be exploited to… more

FITPULS: a code for obtaining analytic fits to aggregate fission-product decay-energy spectra. [In FORTRAN]

Description: The operation and input to the FITPULS code, recently updated to utilize interactive graphics, are described. The code is designed to retrieve data from a library containing aggregate fine-group spectra (150 energy groups) from fission products, collapse the data to few groups (up to 25), and fit the resulting spectra along the cooling time axis with a linear combination of exponential functions. Also given in this report are useful results for aggregate gamma and beta spectra from the decay of… more

Filling the strategic petroleum reserve: its price and economic effects

Description: The estimated movements of the economic indicators under the 1989 target plan (with no OPEC retaliation) are small and could be considered almost negligible when viewed against the size of the economy and the error properties inherent in the macroeconomic model. Therefore, it cannot be firmly stated that a significant loss in real output and increases in inflation and unemployment occur in filling the Reserve. Accelerating the fill rate to meet the 1985 Target (without OPEC retaliation) could i… more

Patterns of United States mortality for ten selected causes of death

Description: Income, ethnicity, education, and occupation are examples of socio-economic factors associated with the occurrence of disease, whether an investigation focuses on an individual or on an aggregation of individuals. In this study, data aggregated to the county level are used to explore two issues - geographic variation and geographic covariation of ten selected causes of death in the United States. The counties of the United States are characterized by 15 socio-economic variables and age-adjusted… more

R and D intensities in US industries

Description: Data are presented on the R and D intensities in US industries, defined to represent R and D expenditures as percentages of sales. Both company-funded and total (including federal funding) intensities are examined. The variations of the R and D intensities among industries and over time are also described. Qualitative discussions are provided on some probable causes underlying the inter-industry and temporal variations of the intensities. At the industry level, the intensity information was use… more

Application of US upper wind data in one design of tethered wind energy systems

Description: The upper atmospheric wind resource for the continental United States, Hawaii, and Alaska is assessed. The raw data were obtained from the National Center for Atmospheric Research, Boulder, Colo. The probability distributions of velocity are presented for 54 sites, and detailed calm wind analyses have been undertaken for five of these locations. On the average, the wind lulls about one day per week for a period in excess of about 30 hours. It is shown that the average power density of this wind… more

Chlorine hazard evaluation for the zinc-chlorine electric vehicle battery. Final technical report. [50 kWh]

Description: Hazards associated with conceivable accidental chlorine releases from zinc-chlorine electric vehicle batteries are evaluated. Since commercial batteries are not yet available, this hazard assessment is based on both theoretical chlorine dispersion models and small-scale and large-scale spill tests with chlorine hydrate (which is the form of chlorine storage in the charged battery). Six spill tests involving the chlorine hydrate equivalent of a 50-kWh battery indicate that the danger zone in whi… more

Impact of entrainment and impingement on fish populations in the Hudson River estuary. Volume III. An analysis of the validity of the utilities' stock-recruitment curve-fitting exercise and prior estimation of beta technique. Environmental Sciences Division publication No. 1792

Description: This report addresses the validity of the utilities' use of the Ricker stock-recruitment model to extrapolate the combined entrainment-impingement losses of young fish to reductions in the equilibrium population size of adult fish. In our testimony, a methodology was developed and applied to address a single fundamental question: if the Ricker model really did apply to the Hudson River striped bass population, could the utilities' estimates, based on curve-fitting, of the parameter al… more

Neutron scattering cross sections for /sup 232/Th and /sup 238/U inferred from proton scattering and charge exchange measurements. [7 MeV, 26 and 27 MeV]

Description: Differential cross sections for the (p,n) reactions to the isobaric analog states (IAS) of /sup 232/Th and /sup 238/U targets were measured at 26 and 27 MeV. The analysis of the data was done in conjunction with the proton elastic and inelastic (2/sup +/, 4/sup +/, 6/sup +/) differential cross sections measured at 26 MeV. Because collective effects are important in this mass region, deformed coupled-channels calculations were carried out for the simultaneous analysis of the proton and neutron o… more

Description: The MCC-1 Static Leach Test Method Round Robbin (RR) was conducted by the Materials Characterization Center (MCC) over a period of 15 months, 1980-82. A total of 25 laboratories provided data in connection with the RR. All together these laboratories tested 769 waste form specimens using the 1980 draft of MCC-1. The specimens tested were approximately one gram wafers cut by the laboratory from samples provided by MCC: NBS borosilicate glass; core dillings of basalt from the Hanford Reservation;… more

A systematic procedure for reservoir characterization: Annual report for the period October 1, 1985-September 30, 1986

Description: This report deals with a variety of topics all centered around the main goal of making numerical reservoir simulation results conform more closely with geologic descriptions. The first part of the report discusses results on conditional simulations of miscible displacements in randomly heterogeneous permeable media. The focus here is on local or macroscopic dispersion, the dispersion experienced at a fixed point in the medium. Macroscopic dispersivity has many of the same dependencies on reserv… more

Savannah River Site environmental report for 1988

Description: During 1988, as in previous years, Savannah River Site operations had no adverse impact on the general public or the environment. Based on the SRS site-specific code, the maximum radiation dose commitment to a hypothetical individual at the SRS boundary from 1988 SRS atmospheric releases of radioactive materials was 0.46 millirem (mrem) (0.0046 millisievert (mSv)). To obtain the maximum dose, an individual would have had to reside on the SRS boundary at the location of highest dose for 24 hours… more
