Data are presented on the R and D intensities in US industries, defined to represent R and D expenditures as percentages of sales. Both company-funded and total (including federal funding) intensities are examined. The variations of the R and D intensities among industries and over time are also described. Qualitative discussions are provided on some probable causes underlying the inter-industry and temporal variations of the intensities. At the industry level, the intensity information was used to categorize the individual industries into five groups: high, above-average, average, below-average, and low intensity. Data on individual firms were also examined for the aerospace, …

Description
Data are presented on the R and D intensities in US industries, defined to represent R and D expenditures as percentages of sales. Both company-funded and total (including federal funding) intensities are examined. The variations of the R and D intensities among industries and over time are also described. Qualitative discussions are provided on some probable causes underlying the inter-industry and temporal variations of the intensities. At the industry level, the intensity information was used to categorize the individual industries into five groups: high, above-average, average, below-average, and low intensity. Data on individual firms were also examined for the aerospace, automotive, chemical, computer and office equipment, and electronics and semiconductor industries. Although other data sources were also consulted, the study relies primarily upon two published data sources: National Science Foundation's Research and Development in Industry series and Business Week's R and D Scoreboard.
