NIF Power Conditioning System Testing at LLNL

Description: The National Ignition Facility (NIF) is now under construction at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). The Power Conditioning System (PCS) for NIF, when completed will consist of a 192 nearly identical 2 megajoule capacitor storage banks driving 7680 two meter long flashlamps. A fully integrated single-module test facility was completed in August of 2000 at LLNL. Avalanche transistor selection for long term stability in streak camera sweep and pulser applications

Description: We have identified the Motorola 2N4014 and 2N5551 and the Raytheon RS3944 as three transistor types that exhibit avalanche characteristics and have long term collector breakdown voltage stability superior to other transistors tested. Stability on all types has been improved by power burnin. An automatic avalanche transistor burnin tester has been constructed to allow power burnin of up to 1008 transistors at a time. High Peak Power Gain Switched Flared Waveguide Lasers

Description: We gain-switch flared waveguide lasers to obtain 14.5 W peak powers and 0.5 nJ pulse energies with laser structures compatible with the generation of diffraction-limited beams. The results are in excellent agreement with a microscopic laser model.

Pixel multichip module design for a high energy physics experiment

Description: At Fermilab, a pixel detector multichip module is being developed for the BTeV experiment. The module is composed of three layers. The lowest layer is formed by the readout integrated circuits (ICs). The back of the ICs is in thermal contact with the supporting structure, while the top is flip-chip bump-bonded to the pixel sensor.
