Structure and formation mechanism of the transfermium isotope {sup 254}No.

Description: The ground-state band of the Z=102 isotope {sup 254}No has been identified up to spin 14, indicating that the nucleus is deformed. The deduced quadruple deformation, {beta} = 0.27, is in agreement with theoretical predictions. These observations confirm that the shell-correction energy responsible for the stability of transfermium nuclei is partly derived from deformation. The survival of {sup 254}No up to spin 14 means that its fission barrier persists at least up to that spin.

Non-Destructive Evaluation of Wind Turbine Blades Using an Infrared Camera

Description: The use of a digital infrared as a non-destructive evaluation thermography camera (NDE) tool was ex- plored in two separate wind turbine blade fatigue tests. The fwst test was a fatigue test of part of a 13.1 meter wood-epoxy-composite blade. The second test was on a 4.25 meter pultruded fiber glass blade section driven at several mechanical resonant frequencies. The digital infrared camera can produce images of either the static temperature distribution on the surface of the specimen, or the d… more

Characterization of Reillex{trademark} HPQ Polymer

Description: This work examined the thermal stability of Reillex(tm) HPQ resin as part of a comprehensive plan to qualify that material for use in HB-line. No low temperature exothermic reactions or volatile organic compounds occurred in various lots of as-received, chloride form Reillex(tm) HPQ polymer or the nitrate form polymer. The studies do not suggest any restrictions on purchase criteria for the resin nor any changes in planned use. Previously observed low temperature exotherms resulted from reactio… more

A Three-Dimensional Optical Photonic Crystal

Description: The search for a photonic crystal to confine optical waves in all three dimensions (3D) has proven to be a formidable task. It evolves from an early theoretical suggestion [1,2], a brief skepticism [3-5] and triumph in developing the mm-wave [6-8] and infrared 3D photonic crystals [9]. Yet, the challenge remains, as the ultimate goal for optoelectronic applications is to realize a 3D crystal at X=1.5 pm communication wavelengths. Operating at visible and near infrared wavelengths, X=1-2 pm, a p… more

CHI: A General Agent Communication Framework

Description: We have completed and exercised a communication framework called CHI (CLOS to HTML Interface) by which agents can communicate with humans. CHI follows HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol) and produces HTML (HyperText Markup Language) for use by WWW (World-Wide Web) browsers. CHI enables the rapid and dynamic construction of interface mechanisms. The essence of CHI is automatic registration of dynamically generated interface elements to named objects in the agent's internal environment. The agent … more

Application of Damage Detection Techniques Using Wind Turbine Modal Data

Description: As any structure ages, its structural characteristics will also change. The goal of this work was to determine if modal response data fkom a wind turbine could be used in the detection of damage. The input stimuli to the wind turbine were from traditional modal hammer input and natural wind excitation. The structural response data was acquired using accelerometers mounted on the rotor of a parked and undamaged horizontal-axis wind turbine. The bolts at the root of one of the three blades were t… more

On Constraints in Assembly Planning

Description: Constraints on assembly plans vary depending on product, assembly facility, assembly volume, and many other factors. Assembly costs and other measures to optimize vary just as widely. To be effective, computer-aided assembly planning systems must allow users to express the plan selection criteria that appIy to their products and production environments. We begin this article by surveying the types of user criteria, both constraints and quality measures, that have been accepted by assembly plann… more

Burn Depth Estimation Using Thermal Excitation and Imaging

Description: Accurate estimation of the depth of partial-thickness burns and the early prediction of a need for surgical intervention are difficult. A non-invasive technique utilizing the difference in thermal relaxation time between burned and normal skin may be useful in this regard. In practice, a thermal camera would record the skin's response to heating or cooling by a small amount-roughly 5{degrees} Celsius for a short duration. The thermal stimulus would be provided by a heat lamp, hot or cold air, o… more

Microstructure of GaN Grown on (111) Si by MOCVD

Description: Gallium nitride was grown on (111) Si by MOCVD by depositing an AIN buffer at 108O"C and then GaN at 1060 {degrees}C. The 2.2pm layer cracked along {1-100} planes upon cooling to room temperature, but remained adherent. We were able to examine the microstructure of material between cracks with TEM. The character and arrangement of dislocation are much like those of GaN grown on Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}: -2/3 pure edge and - 1/3 mixed (edge + screw), arranged in boundaries around domains of GaN that ar… more

Measurement of Truck Cab Flow in Support of Wind Turbine Testing

Description: This report describes an experiment to measure the airflow over a truck cab that can be used to conduct steady-state tests on an 8-kW wind turbine. The cab airflow measurements were made to document the turbine inflow for analytical models. The airflow measurements were made with an array of anemometers positioned to represent the turbine rotor disk. The data showed that the influence of the truck cab was primarily in the lower sector of the rotor disk. The influence was negligible in the rest … more

A finite-difference frequency-domain code for electromagnetic induction tomography

Description: We are developing a new 3D code for application to electromagnetic induction tomography and applications to environmental imaging problems. We have used the finite-difference frequency- domain formulation of Beilenhoff et al. (1992) and the anisotropic PML (perfectly matched layer) approach (Berenger, 1994) to specify boundary conditions following Wu et al. (1997). PML deals with the fact that the computations must be done in a finite domain even though the real problem is effectively of infini… more
