THE ADVANCED TEST REACTOR-ATR FINAL CONCEPTUAL DESIGN

Description: The results of a study are presented which provided additional experimental-loop irradiation space for the AECDRD testing program. It was a premise that the experiments allocated to this reactor were those which could not be accommodated in the MTR, ETR, or in existing commercial test reactors. To accomplish the design objectives called for a reactor producing perturbed neutron fluxes exceeding 1O/sup 15/ thermal n/cm/sup 2/-sec and 1.5 x 1O/sup 15/ epithermal n/cm/sup 2/-sec. To accommodate th… more

An Algorithm for Construction Feasible Schedules and Computing Their Schedule Times

Description: "An algorithm for the generation of feasible schedules and the computation of the completion times of the job operations of feasible schedule is presented. Using this algorithm, the distribution of schedule times over the set of feasible schedule—or a subset of feasible schedules—was determined for technological orderings that could occur in a general machine shop. These distributions are found to be approximately normal. Biasing techniques corresponding to “first come first serve,” random choi… more

Analog Stimulation of HRP In-Pile Slurry Loop Facility in the LITR

Description: An analog simulation is made of the HRP in-pile slurry loop in the LITR. The radiolytic gas pressure in the pressurizer is determined. This pressure is a result of the generation of radiolytic gas in the loop core. A graphical result is obtained showing the effect of catalyst activity and pressurizer flow rate on the pressure rise from radiolytic gas. The thermal behavior of the system is studied, and the response to various controller settings is predicted. Controller settings very near optimu… more

Analysis of quality certification data: WARP, TFC and delta OD{sub 2} as a function of reactor operating conditions

Description: This report is the second in a series on the definition of performance of irradiated fuel elements as measured by the Quality Certification Program. Objectives of this analysis are to establish empirical mathematical relations which fit observed data from > 2000 fuel elements measurements for WARP, TFC, and DELTA OD{sub 2}, as a function of reactor conditions (power, surface temperature, time).

The Boron-Carbon System: Quarterly Report Number 2, August - October 1960

Description: Abstract: A definitive investigation of the boron-carbon equilibrium system is being made by X-ray diffraction, metallographic, and thermal analytical techniques. Additional baron-carbon alloys have been prepared by sintering and arc-melting compacts prepared from boron and high-purity graphite. Metallographic examinations of these alloys are in agreement with alloys previously preapred from lampblack. X-ray investigation of sintered compacts indicates that the solubility range of boron carbide… more

CALCULATION OF HETEROGENEITY EFFECTS IN ZPR-III FAST ASSEMBLIES USING THE DSN PROGRAM

Description: Reactivity changes, flux variations, and detector-response variations for ZPR-III fast critical assemblies, due to variations in heterogeneities caused by various intradrawer configurations of fuel and diluent plates and deviations of reactivities from ideal homogeneous cores, are calculated as reflective boundary slab cells using the DSN code. For these cells the calculated multiplication constants, for a given assembly plate configuration, by N = 4,8, and 16 approximations successively increa… more

CHARGED PARTICLE OPTICS OF MAGNETIC SECTOR SPECTROMETERS WITH H = H$sub 0$ $alpha$r$sup -$ (z,r, /phi/ CYLINDRICAL COORDINATES WITH THE z-AXIS THE OBJECT-IMAGE LINE

Description: The charged particle optics of symmetric and asymmetric spectrometers was developed, taking into account the effects of fringing fields. Formulas are given for: the image of point and extended sources, and their resolution and transmission. The suppression of ghost peaks arising from multiloop trajectories was studied. Methods and tables for the calculation of instruments are given. A comparison was made between various instruments already constructed, and some general considerations concerning… more

Climatic Charts and Data of the Radio Refractive Index for the United States and the World

Description: From Introduction: "This Monograph has as its purpose the compilation and analysis of the extensive radio refractive index data available within the Central Radio Propagation Laboratory of the National Bureau of Standards. This will be accomplished by presenting both tabulations of basic data for specific locations and charts for interpolation to any location."

Compilation of Requests for Nuclear Cross Section Measurements

Description: This report is a working document of the UB AEC Nuclear Cross Sections Advisory Group and is issued about twice a year for the purpose of stimulating important cross section measurements. The requests listed in this report have originated from various Atomic Energy Commission contractors, the Advisory Committee on Reactor Physics, and the Nuclear Cross Sections Advisory Group. CRITICAL STUDIES OF A 450-LITER URANIUM OXIDE FAST REACTOR CORE (ZPR-III ASSEMBLY 29)

Description: Results of studies with ZPR-IH Assembly 29, a mockup of a typical, dilute UO/sub 2-/-fueled fast reactor, are reported. The assembly consisted of a 454-liter cylindrical core, blanketed with depleted uranium, with a critical mass of 42l kg U/sup 235/. Experimnents included measurements of fission rates, material reactivity worths, and Rossi alpha. The results of multigroup calculations using the present Argonne cross-section sets are presented, and discrepancies between experimental results and… more

Data Processing For Bubble Chambers

Description: The computer program which performs spatial reconstruction of events photographed in a bubble chamber is required to eliminate human and digitizer errors. It recognizes and corrects for single nuclear scatterings in the presence of multiple Coulomb scatterings. Momentum components are determined and kinematic constraints are applied. Measured parameters are performed into special reference frames and quantities of physical interest are calculated. Results are stored in a tape file containing al… more

Development of Liquid-Phase Sintering Techniques for Molybdenum Alloys. Final Report

Description: An envelope-type microstructure produced by liquidphase sintering techniques was used to develop ductiIe molybdenum-base alloys for sodium-cooled fast reactor application. A total of 105 compositions was examined; 21 showed evidence of room-temperature ductility, and a number of other compositions appeared promising. The prerequisites for obtaining ductile liquid-phase sintered materials were demonstrated. The most ductile alloys produced are based on the Mo--Pd--Cu and Mo --W--Ni--Fe systems. … more

The Effect of the Liquid Viscosity in Two-Phase, Two-Component Flow

Description: An evaluation was made of the effect of the liquid-phase viscosity on slip ratio using a forced-circulation two-phase two-component system operating at atmospheric pressure for air and glycerol-water mixtures. The effect of liquidphase viscosity on pressure drop was observed, and the flow regimes were identified and studied. The approximate ranges of the variables investigated were: liquid viscosity, 0.75 to 500 cp; quality, 0.005 to 0.0184; liquid flow rate, 0.2 to 0.8 Ib/sec; air flow rate. 0… more
