Final Report on Purification of Thorium Nitrate by Solvent Extraction With Tributyl Phosphate: 2. Mixer-Settler Pilot Plant Investigations

Description: From abstract: "This report describes the construction and operation of a mixer-settler pilot plant for the purification of mantle-grade thorium nitrate. The liquid-liquid extraction process utilized 30% tributyl phosphate - 70% 'Solvesso-100' as the organic solvent and nitric acid as the salting agent. Continuous steady-state operation of the equipment was demonstrated, with very good recovery of thorium."

Description: From abstract: In the vicinity of Salmon Bay near the northeastern end of Prince of Wales Island, southeastern Alaska, samples obtained in 1951 from narrow, steeply dipping, carbonate-hematite veins contain as much as ,O.07 percent equivalent uranium. The Effect of Gaps on Pile Reactivity

Description: From abstract: "The variation of the reactivity of a pile as a function of width of a transverse gap is obtained. The method involves first finding the boundary condition satisfied by the flux at the gap face. This, in principle, provides enough information for a complete solution of the pile equations. A method for calculating the reactivity change is presented. The calculated reactivity is compared with experiment and a brief discussion of the validity of the approximations is given."

Final report on Production Test No. 105-1-MR -- Poison column control during reactor operation

Description: The lack of control rod capacity in the reactors with nine rods is causing significant production losses. The present control system, which functioned satisfactorily at a 300 MW equilibrium power level, is unable to counteract the larger startup reactivity transient effects at the current high power levels. A Description of the Acetone-Dye Solution Method of Demarcating a Leak Process Tubing While in the Pile

Description: Abstract: "A method has been devised and successfully used for marking a leaking pile process tube prior to its removal from the pile, such that subsequent location of the leak is more easily accomplished. An acetone solution of Testor's Dark Red Airplane Dope is poured into the suspect tube. The solution leaks from the hole and stains the surrounding area a light pink. To date the method has been used on tubes 3573F, 0486F, 0867F, and 3670F."

Description: This report endeavors to point out the radiation hazards involved with respect to the patient undergoing oral roentgenography. The dose rate can be as high as 280 r/min. The Crystal Structures of NpC and Pu2O3

Description: NpC and Pu{sub 2}O{sub 3} have been identified by x-ray diffraction. NpC is face-centered cubic, NaCl structure with a = 5.004 {+-} 0.005 A Pu{sub 2}O{sub 3} is isomorphous with the hexagonal ''A form'' for the rare earth sesquioxides with a = 3.840 {+-} 0.004 A; c = 5.957 {+-} 0.006 A and has essentially the same atomic parameters at La{sub 2}O{sub 3}.
