Analysis of Iron in Thorium, Beryllium, and Cerium

Description: Introduction. the colorimetric determination of iron based on the formation of the colored ferrous-1,10-phenanthroline complex has been used successfully by a number of investigators. In this technical report, its adaptation to the routine determination of iron in cerium, thorium, and beryllium metals and their compounds is described.

Sweeping of Fission Gases from Solutions of U and Plutonium

Description: Technical report describing two experiments performed to compare the amounts of fission gases swept out of UNH solution with those amounts swept out of PU solution under idential condiditons. The charge wire technique was used. The essential date and the results are given in tables in the report.

The Production of Beryllium by the Metallothermic Reduction of Beryllium Fluoride

Description: Report discussing "the production of beryllium by the metallothermic reduction of its fluoride...Charges of BaF2 and Mg reacted smoothly when heated by induction in graphite crucibles and on continued heating the metal and slag separated fairly well. It was found that an addition of CaCl2 to the top of the charge facilitated the separation a great deal. Very clean, massive metal has been produced by this procedure."

Recovery of Tuballoy (Uranium) From Tantalum

Description: Report discussing methods for the "separation of tantalum and tuballoy from used tantalum K's. These methods are: hydrofluorination, fluorination, hydrochlorination and dissolution in hydrofluoric acid -- nitric acid, hydrofluoric acid -- hydrochloric acid mixture, and hydrofluoric acid alone."

The Study and Calibration of P.I.G.'s in TCl₄ Vapor

Description: Report discussing a study involving P.I.G.'s (Philips Ion Gage) in TCl₄ vapor in an all-carbon oven to compare data to a previous study involving P.I.G.'s in air. The purpose of the investigation was to determine the best P.I.G. in TCl₄ vapor and obtain its calibration.

Abrasive Blasting for Cleaning Parts

Description: Abstract: A demonstration on August 22, 1945, showed that Alpha or Beta M or K parts, including insulators, can be well cleaned with a pressure-feed abrasive blaster. The abrasive is a slurry of alumina and water mixed with high velocity air in a special feed nozzle. The slurry is continuously recycled.

The Effect of Neutron Bombardment on the Specific Heat of Graphite at Low Temperatures

Description: The work described in this technical report was undertaken as part of a larger program dealing with a systematic investigation of changes in the physical prosperities of artificial graphite due to neutron bombardment. Very pronounced among those changes is the increase in the elastic modulus. Since there is a general relationship between the elastic modulus of a given substance and its specific heat, it was expected that corresponding changes will occur in the specific heat. In conclusion, th… more
