The Plutonium-Based Fuel Production Programmes in France

Description: A description of the Cadarache research center is presented. This facility was designed to study the manufacture of Pu fuel prototypes. The present program at the facility includes fabrication of fuel for RAPSODIE and production of Pu-- (J alloy slugs for the critical experiments AQUILON and MARIUS. Information is included concerning use of Pu in thermal and fast reactors. (J.R.D.)

Mining Methods Used in the Underground Tunnels and Test Rooms at Stripa

Description: Results of the Swedish-American cooperative research program are reported in which the cooperating scientists explore the geological, geophysical, hydrological, geochemical, and structural effects anticipated from the use of a large crystalline rock mass as a geologic repository for nuclear waste. Two new methods, smooth blasting and slot drilling, were tested and used at Stripa. The smooth blasting technique uses the symmetric pattern of the contour holes and a low charge density in each roundā€¦ more

[Report of Foreign Travel: International Workshop on Radioiodinated Free Fatty Acids, Amsterdam]

Description: The traveler participated in the Second International Workshop on Radioiodinated Free Fatty Acids in Amsterdam, The Netherlands where he presented an invited paper describing the pioneering work at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) involving the design, development and testing of new radioiodinated methyl-branched fatty acids for evaluation of heart disease. He also chaired a technical session on the testing of new agents in various in vitro and in vivo systems. He also visited the Instiā€¦ more

Radioactive Waste Management in the Former USSR. Volume 3

Description: Radioactive waste materials--and the methods being used to treat, process, store, transport, and dispose of them--have come under increased scrutiny over last decade, both nationally and internationally. Nuclear waste practices in the former Soviet Union, arguably the world`s largest nuclear waste management system, are of obvious interest and may affect practices in other countries. In addition, poor waste management practices are causing increasing technical, political, and economic problems ā€¦ more

Energy R and D in the Netherlands

Description: This report documents trends in R and D and in particular (public) energy R and D in the Netherlands. Besides quantitative information on R and D and energy R and D, the report gives an impression of changes in science and technology policy, energy policy and changes in energy research priorities (both organizational and financial). In the Netherlands, 2.09% of GDP (or $6.7 billion) was invested in R and D activities in 1995. The private sector financed 46% of all R and D in that year. A small ā€¦ more

Radioactive Releases Impact from Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant, Bulgaria into the Environment

Description: The aim of this paper is to present a general overview of the radioactive releases impact generated by Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant (KNPP), Bulgaria to the environment and public. The liquid releases presented are known as the so called controlled water discharges, that are generated after reprocessing of the inevitable accumulated liquid radioactive waste in the plant operation process. The radionuclides containing in the liquid releases are given in the paper as a result of systematic measuriā€¦ more

Commissioning and Start-Up Tests of Alpha-Contaminated Solid Waste Sorting, Cementing, and Interim Storage Facilities at Belgoprocess (Belgium)

Description: The alpha-contaminated solid waste generated in Belgium results from past activities in the fuel cycle (R & D +Reprocessing and MOX fabrication pilot plants) and present operation of BELGONUCLEAIRE's MOX fuel fabrication plant. After the main steps in the management of alpha-contaminated solid waste were established, BELGONUCLEAIRE, with the backing of BELGOPROCESS and ONDRAF/NIRAS, started the design and construction of the T & C and interim-storage facilities for this alpha waste. The accumulā€¦ more

Sequestration of Carbon Dioxide with Enhanced Gas Recovery-Case Study Altmark, North German Basin

Description: Geologic carbon dioxide storage is one strategy for reducingCO2 emissions into the atmosphere. Depleted natural gas reservoirs are anobvious target for CO2 storage due to their proven record of gascontainment. Germany has both large industrial sources of CO2 anddepleting gas reservoirs. The purpose of this report is to describe theanalysis and modeling performed to investigate the feasibility ofinjecting CO2 into nearly depleted gas reservoirs in the Altmark area inNorth Germany for geologic COā€¦ more

Sequestration of CO2 in the Altmark Natural Gas Field, Germany: Mobility Control to Extend Enhanced Gas Recovery

Description: We are investigating the technical feasibility of injecting CO2 for carbon sequestration with enhanced gas recovery (CSEGR) in the depleted Altmark natural gas reservoir, Germany. Our approach is numerical simulation using TOUGH2/EOS7C. Our earlier simulation studies have shown early CO2 breakthrough due to fast-flow through the high-permeability sand layers. In order to extend the period of enhanced CH4 recovery, we propose the preinjection of gelling fluids for the purpose of limiting the mobā€¦ more
