The transmission interface constraint problem. Revision

Description: Electric power transmission systems exhibit a number of complex constraints on their operation and usage. When a network is subject to a constraint that limits the amount of power that can be moved from one region to another, there is said to be an interface limit. The power systems literature gives no general treatment of the engineering-economics of this ubiquitous phenomenon. Particular aspects of interface limits are typically discussed in sophisticated technical detail, but the general eng… more

Data management implementation plan for the site characterization of the Waste Area Grouping 1 Groundwater Operable Unit at Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Description: The Waste Area Grouping (WAG) 1 Groundwater Operable Unit (OU) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, is undergoing a site characterization. This project is not mandated by the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA); therefore, no formalized meetings for data quality objective (DQO) development were held. Internally, DQOs were generated by the project team based on the end uses of the data to be collected. The 150-acre WAG 1 is c… more

Identification of single-shell tank in-tank hardware obstructions to retrieval at Hanford Site Tank Farms

Description: Two retrieval technologies, one of which uses robot-deployed end effectors, will be demonstrated on the first single-shell tank (SST) waste to be retrieved at the Hanford Site. A significant impediment to the success of this technology in completing the Hanford retrieval mission is the presence of unique tank contents called in-tank hardware (ITH). In-tank hardware includes installed and discarded equipment and various other materials introduced into the tank. This paper identifies those items … more

1/12-Scale scoping experiments to characterize double-shell tank slurry uniformity: Test plan

Description: Million gallon double-shell tanks (DSTs) at Hanford are used to store transuranic, high-level, and low-level wastes. These wastes generally consist of a large volume of salt-laden solution covering a smaller volume of settled sludge primarily containing metal hydroxides. These wastes will be retrieved and processed into immobile waste forms suitable for permanent disposal. The current retrieval concept is to use submerged dual-nozzle pumps to mobilize the settled solids by creating jets of flui… more

Development of a multi-functional scarifier dislodger with an integral pneumatic conveyance retrieval system for single-shell tank remediation. FY93 summary report

Description: The Underground Storage Tank Integrated Demonstration (UST-ID) is evaluating several hydraulic dislodger concepts and retrieval technologies to develop specifications for system that can retrieve wastes from single-shell tanks. Each of the dislodgers will be evaluated sequentially to determine its ability to fracture and dislodge various waste simulants such as salt cake, sludge, and viscous liquid. The retrieval methods will be evaluated to determine their ability to convey this dislodged mate… more

Sandia Lightning Simulation Facility Building 888. Hazards assessment document

Description: The Department of Energy Order 5500.3A requires facility-specific hazards assessments be prepared, maintained, and used for emergency planning purposes. This hazards assessment document describes the chemical and radiological hazards associated with the Sandia Lightning Simulation Facility, Building 888. The entire inventory was screened according to the potential airborne impact to onsite and offsite individuals. The air dispersion model, ALOHA, estimated pollutant concentrations downwind from… more

Standardization of CDF and D{O} reported luminosities

Description: During FNAL collider store 5094, CDF- and D{O} modified the computation of their reported luminosities to utilize a standardized world average inelastic cross-section. The changes made at each experiment and in the Accelerator Division are detailed below. A net decrease was expected and was observed for the reported instantaneous luminosity from each experiment. These changes affect the estimates of instantaneous and integrated luminosities reported to the Accelerator Division for the purposes … more

The status of molecules

Description: This report summarizes the experimental and theoretical status of hadronic molecules, which are weakly-bound states of two or more hadrons. We begin with a brief history of the subject and discuss a few good candidates, and then abstract some signatures for molecules which may be of interest in the classification of possible molecule states. Next we argue that a more general understanding of 2 {yields} 2 hadron-hadron scattering amplitudes will be crucial for molecule searches, and discuss some… more

Deposition and properties of novel nitride superlattice coatings. Progress report, 28 September 1990--October 1994

Description: The major effort during this report period was to elucidate the hardening mechanisms in polycrystalline superlattices. Since the last progress report, the authors have been working on theoretical modeling of hardening mechanisms in superlattices and have carried out detailed studies of two new polycrystalline superlattice coatings, NbN/VN and CrN/TiN, which were produced using an opposed, dual-cathode, high-rate, reactive, unbalanced-magnetron sputtering system. Significant hardness enhancement… more

Waste management plan for the remedial investigation of Waste Area Grouping 2 at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tennessee

Description: This Project Waste Management Plan defines the criteria and methods to be used for managing waste generated during activities associated with Waste Area Grouping 2 at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The waste management strategy is based on the generation and management of waste on a systematic basis using the most appropriate combination of waste reduction, segregation, treatment, storage, and disposal practices while protecting the environment and human health, maintaining as low as reasonably… more

Evaporation analysis for Tank SX-104

Description: Decreases in historical interstitial liquid level measurements in tank SX-104 were compared to predictions of a numerical model based upon diffusion of water through a porous crust. The analysis showed that observed level decreases could be explained by evaporation.

A longitudinal bunch monitoring system using LabVIEW{reg_sign} and high-speed oscilloscopes

Description: A new longitudinal bunch monitoring system has been installed at Fermilab for the Tevatron and Main Ring. For each machine, a signal from a broadband wall current monitor is sampled and digitized by a high-speed oscilloscope. A Macintosh computer, running LabVIEW-based software, controls the scopes and CAMAC timing modules and analyzes the acquired data. The resulting bunch parameters are used for a variety of purposes, including Tevatron collider luminosity calculation and injection analysis. … more

Time-resolved EPR studies of the H atom: A stable heavy isotope of muonium

Description: Muonium physicists and chemists, when they talk about ``primary processes,`` are probably concerned mostly about end-of-track phenomena in the slowing down of a many-MeV charged particle, analogous to the proton. The author`s experience is with electron accelerators and radiolysis; hence, he will comment briefly on the differences and relative advantages of electron and proton radiolysis for the study of H atoms, as opposed to muonium. Then, he will take the liberty of defining primary processe… more

Reaction progress pathways for glass and spent fuel under unsaturated conditions

Description: The source term for the release of radionuclides from a nuclear waste repository is the waste form. In order to assess the performance of the repository and the engineered barrier system (EBS) compared to regulations established by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Environmental Protection Agency it is necessary (1) to use available data to place bounding limits on release rates from the EBS, and (2) to develop a mechanistic predictive model of the radionuclide release and validate the … more
