Symbols for Instrument Flowsheets and Drawings : a Recommended System for Application to ORNL Instrument Work

Description: This report supersedes ORNL CF-57-2-1, which was an extension and revision of ORNL CF-54-6-72. Details concerning a recommended system of flow-plan symbols and drawing are given. The system is designed to identify the function of all major instrument components and to show schematically the operation of the instrument relative to the particular process. The system is used for identification and designation. The system is a modification of the Instrument Society of American Recommended Practice … more

Economic Factors of MFP Thermoelectric Generators

Description: "Mixed Fission Products (MFP) for use as a heat source for thermoelectric generators will become increasingly available in the coming years. The Atomic Energy Commission sponsored program on solidification of nuclear wastes is now entering the hot-bench scale test phase. During this phase approximately 5000 thermal watts of two year old MFP could be produced monthly. Two different types of hot calcination pilot plants are planned for installation at the Hanford National Laboratories in the 1964… more

Refractory Metals as Alkali Liquid Metal Containment Materials

Description: Abstract. Refractory metals and their alloys are good container materials for alkali metal coolants. Thermodynamics of interaction with contaminants have been correlated with experimental test and show the need for high purity materials. Structural metal solubility data to 1600F can be used to correlate and predict engineering systems.

Diffusion of Iron, Cobalt, and Nickel in Gold, Report No. 5

Description: "The diffusivities of Fe, Co, and Al in otherwise pure Au were determined by a residual activity technique. It was found that the frequency factors and activation energies of the transition elements into Au are normal relative to the values for Au self-diffusion, and suggest that lattice diffusion is operative, in contrast to the corresponding situation for the diffusion of these elements in Al. This difference in behavior is explained in terms of the marked difference in solid solubilities in … more

Color Production From Energetic Ions Impinging On Metals

Description: It has been observed that energetic gaseous ions mark their region of impingement on certain metals in color. Under identical conditions of bombardment, multicharged ions of the same gas mark their impact areas with different colors. The colors are sensitive to the type and energy of the ion as well as to the metal bombarded. These colors may result from reflections from thin films formed by reactions at the target. Because the colors indicate that thicker films are produced with increased ion … more

Resonance Integral Calculations for Evaluation of Doppler Coefficients: The Rapture Code

Description: A code (RAPTURE) was programmed for the Philco TRANSAC 2000 computer to perform calculations needed for the evaluation of Doppler Coefficients in fast reactors with degraded neuron spectra. This code computes resonance integrals, averages them over resonance parameter distributions, and computes fission and capture cross sections as a function of fuel temperature and of potential scattering cross section per absorber isotope.

Cosmogenic Carbon-14 and Chlorine-36 in Meteorites

Description: In 1947 Bauer, and later independently Huntley (1948), pointed out that the helium content of iron meteorites as measured by Paneth and coworkers could be accounted for by the accumulation through cosmic-ray production rather then the decay of uranium and thorium. Bauer (1947) also predicted that the meteroitic helium should contain a significant proportion of He3. I was realized that by studying the effects of cosmic radiation on meteorites much could be learned about the history of meteorite… more

Diffusion in Cobalt-Nickel Alloys, Report No. 4

Description: The self-diffusivities of Co60 and Ni63 in cobalt--nickel solid solutions exhibit a greater activation energy below the Curie temperature (T/sub c/) than above. Values of DELTA Q = Q (ferromagnetic) -- Q (paramagnetic) are approximately equal to RT/sub c/. This observation is interpreted to indicate that the increment in activation energy arises from an increase in the formation energy of a vacancy in the ferromagnetic lattice, with the additional binding energy arising from the interaction of … more

Alkali Metal Physical Properties Program at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft-CANEL

Description: The favorable combination of physical properties such as heat capacity, viscosity, electrical resistivity, thermal conductivity and high temperature liquid range make alkali metals, in principle, among the best heat transfer fluids available for use in nuclear reactor and other esoteric powerplant systems. Unfortunately, many of these properties are not known with sufficient certainty in the high temperature region to permit optimization of design criteria for developing maximum efficiency coo… more

The Fast Rise Pulser

Description: A circuit is described developed to fill the need for a pulser with a 15-20 volt amplitude into the 93 ohm line, stable, transistorized and low cost, fast 10 Nano second rise, and a variable repetition period from 0.5 sec. to 4 sec.

Investigations of Radioactive Fuel-Bearing Glasses

Description: "A series of high urania-content glasses were fiberized and examined for high-temperature strength properties. One glass, RX360 containing 60% U/sub 3/O/ sub 8/ by weight, had better high-temperature tensile properties than any glass previously reported. It was observed that many of the glasses studied separated into immiscible phases and that the fiberizable glass phase had lower U/sub 3/O/ sub 8/ content than the base compositions. A physical analysis of crystal structures of the devitrificat… more

Target Efficiency Measurements at the AGS

Description: Two methods for measuring target efficiencies are briefly discussed. The second method puts an upper bound on the efficiency and permits observation of instantaneous efficiency, thereby aiding location of losses. Measurements agree well with conventional radiochemical values.

On the Synergistic Effect in Solvent Extraction

Description: The studies of Irving and Edgington, and Healy on the synergistic effects of tributyl phosphate (TBP) and tri-n-octylphosphine oxide (TOPO) on the solvent extraction of thorium and other metals by thenoyltrifluoroacetone (TTA) are discussed. It is shown that the synergistic effect is a result of addition reactions as well as replacement reactions and is not a function of the metal being extracted. A compilation of equilibrium constants describing the synergistic effect of TBP and TOPO on TTA … more

On the Generalized Overrelaxation Method for Operator Equations

Description: "In Householder, using Weissinger's identity , obtained the necessary and sufficient conditions for the c onvergence of the Seidel method for the solution of finite matrix equations of the form (D-S-S*-F)u = f. The same coniditions were also obtained by Krein and Prozorovakaya for an analog of the Seidel method for the operator equations of the form (D+S+S*)u = f in a Hilbert space. The purpose of this article is to extend the result of the above authors to the generalized overrelaxation iter… more

The Half-Life and Gamma Ray Abundance of Cs-137

Description: The nuclide Cs-137 is a fission product commonly used for measurement of uranium burnup in irradiated uranium fuel by the fission product to uranium ratio method. In the application of this method, the largest single error introduced in the measurement of burnup is the uncertainty in the half-life of Cs-137. Because of the uncertainty in this value and its importance in nuclear fuel burnup analysis, a reinvestigation was undertaken to obtain a more accurate value using the mass spectrometric me… more

High Pressure Pump Seal Development

Description: "Results of tests indicate that the nucerite-bearium seal system is compatible. This combination was operated as long as 9 hours without serious damage. In other work, the test rig was modified to eliminate pressure fluctuations and extraneous dirt, and Type IIA seal parts were designed."
