Final Report on Swell Detection by Pusher Method

Description: Experiments wee performed to evaluate the feasibility of detecting swelled slug elements in Hanford reactors by measuring the force necessary to push the slug column in its tube. These experiments are described. The results indicate the method presents no unsolvable problems.

Description: Abstract. Slow neutron transmission measurements as a function of the time of flight of the incident neutron have been made for three different thicknesses of Beryllium. The energy region from 0.004 eV to 50 eV was investigated using the Columbia neutron beam spectrometer system. Recalculation of the Critical Size and Multiplication Constant of a Homogeneous UO2 - D2O Mixtures

Description: The multiplication constant and optimal concentration of a slurry pile is recalculated on the basis of Mitchell's recent experiments on resonance absorption. The smallest chain reacting unit contains 45 to 55 m3 of D2O.

Properties of Uranyl Fluoride

Description: Abstract: Pure UO2F2 is made by reaction between anhydrous HF and pure UO3. Although it is difficult to prepare free of water, it is not very hygroscopic. Prolonged heating at 100-105 degrees releases 99.9% of the water in an aqueous solution; the rate of loss of water is very small after saturation is reached. Description: Abstract: The counting accuracy of the Chicago Scalers, Models 961A and 961B, is a function of the bias setting of the limiter (V2). this report gives quantitative data supporting this thesis. A method of making bias settings is suggested. These tests were run at the suggestion of Mr. V. C. Hanson.

The Thermal Conductivity of Liquid UF6

Description: From introduction: "The measurement of the thermal conductivity of liquid TF6 presented unusual difficulties because of two of its properties which necessitated working with a closed system. The Fission Neutron Spectrum of 25

Description: Abstract: "Photographic plates have been used to measure the energy of neutrons from the fission of 25. The spectrum as inferred from the ranges of 850 protons recoiling in the forward direction shows a very wide maximum at ~1.5 Mev with an exponentially decreasing high energy tail which extends beyond 7 Mev.
