Aerospace Safety Re-Entry Analytical and Experimental Program, SNAP 2 and 10A (Interim Report)

Description: Before a reactor is launched into a satellite orbit about the Earth, the hazards to the population must necessarily be considered in the event that the reactor re-enters the Earth' s atmosphere and possibly impacts with the ground. Analytical and experimental efforts for calculating these potential hazards as they apply to SNAP-2 and -10A are described. (auth)

ARMF II REGULATING ROD READOUT AND SHIM ROD DRIVE AND POSITION DISPLAY

Description: A description of the digital readout and drive portion of the Advanced Reactivity Measurement Facility II is presented along with the philosophy used in selecting the system block diagram and components, accuracy considerations, and a preliminary evaluation of performance and usability. The presentation discourages duplicating of the equipment; advantage should be taken of the opportunity to improve upon it. To this end guideposts are provided as well as a documentation of those aspects of the … more

The CNSG II--a Conceptual Merchant Ship Nuclear Reactor Design

Description: The Consolidated Nuclear Steam Generator H consists of a pressurized water reactor, a steam generator, and a pressurizer combined in a sirgle pressure vessel. The design of the 66000 shaft horsepower system is presented, together with basic plant irformation for designs of 15000, 22000, and 30000 shaft horsepower. The economics, safety characteristics, and operational procedures of the plant are also discussed. (D.C.W.)

THE COEFFICIENTS CONNECTING THE STARK AND FIELD-FREE WAVE FUNCTIONS FOR HYDROGEN: THEORY AND APPLICATION TO LORENTZ DISSOCIATION

Description: A general expression for the expansion coefficients connecting the Stark (parabolic coordinates) and field-free (spherical coordinates) wave functions for hydrogen is obtained. Numerical tables of these coefficients through principal quantum number n = 10 are given. In the course of the derivation several new identities involving generalized hypergeometric functions are deduced. Applications to radiative attenuation, particularly in connection with the ALICE experiment, are discussed. It is con… more

Corrosion Mechanisms in Refractory Metal-Alkali Metal Systems

Description: The use of liquid metals introduces solid-liquid metal interactions which are not primarily electrochemical, as found in systems involving aqueous raedia. The corrosion of solid metals by these coolants occurs as the system attempts to attain chemical equilibrium. The mechanisms by which this can occur are (a) dissolutioning, which results from the solubility relationships between the solid and liquid metals, and (b) impurity reactions, resulting from the presence of interstitial impurities, su… more

Deflections and Stresses in Hemispherical Lightweight Cellular Support Structure With Flexible Supporting Shell

Description: A spherical component is frequently supported by a hemispherical lightweight cellular core which is in turn supported by a flexible elastic support shell. Design information is given on computing the normal and shear stresses in the core as well as circumferential and meridional stresses in the flexible support shell. A set of graphs is given showing the ratio of these stresses for the case of a flexible support shell to the corresponding maximum stress for the case of a rigid support shell, pl… more

DENSITY MEASUREMENTS IN GLOVEBOXES. WITH DENSITY DATA ON MONOBROMOBENZENE, CAST THORIUM, THORIUM-URANIUM, AND THORIUM-PLUTONIUM ALLOYS

Description: By taking into consideration temperature differences between the glovebox atmosphere and the liquid, it was possible to make density measurements in gloveboxes by the hydrostatic weighing method with monobromobenzene as a liquid with an accuracy of plus or minus 0.005 g/cm/sup 3/. This is an improvement by an order of magnitude over the prior state. This accuracy allows structural changes to be detected in thorium--uranium and thorium--plutonium alloys. (auth)

Design criteria: Bauxite-sulfuric acid feed facilities 100-K Area

Description: These criteria delineate objective, bases, and functional requirements governing preparation of design of the bauxite-sulfuric acid feed facilities installed in the 183-KE and KW Buildings. These facilities produces the chemical coagulant used in the treatment of Columbia River water in the K Area water plants and thus replaces the existing liquid alum feed systems used for this purpose.
