3-D electromagnetic modeling of wakefields in accelerator components

Description: We discuss the use of 3-D finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) electromagnetic codes for modeling accelerator components. Computational modeling of cylindrically symmetric structures such as induction accelerator cells has been very successful in predicting the wake potential and wake impedances of these structures, but full 3-D modeling of complex structures has been limited due to substantial computer resources required for a full 3-D model. New massively parallel 3-D time domain electromagne… more

Description: X-ray spectra of 2l-2l{prime} transitions with 3 {le} n {le} 12 in the row five transition metals zirconium (Z = 40), niobium (Z = 41), molybdenum (Z = 42) and palladium (Z = 46) from charge states around neonlike have been observed from Alcator C-Mod plasmas. Accurate wavelengths ({+-} .2 m{angstrom}) have been determined by comparison with neighboring argon, chlorine and sulfur lines with well known wavelengths. Line identifications have been made by comparison to ab initio atomic structure c… more

Broadband acoustic source processing in a noisy shallow ocean environment

Description: Acoustic sources found in the ocean environment are spatially complex and broadband, complicating the analysis of received acoustic data considerably. A model-based approach is developed for a broadband source in a shallow ocean environment characterized by a normal-mode propagation model. Here we develop the optimal Bayesian solution to the broadband pressure-field enhancement and modal function extraction problem.

Conversion of high carbon refinery by-products. Quarterly report, July 1--September 30, 1996

Description: The overall objective of the project is to demonstrate that a partial oxidation system, which utilizes a transport reactor, is a viable means of converting refinery wastes, byproducts, and other low value materials into valuable products. The primary product would be a high quality fuel gas, which could also be used as a source of hydrogen. The concept involves subjecting the hydrocarbon feed to pyrolysis and steam gasification in a circulating bed of solids. Carbon residue formed during pyroly… more

Corrective action management (CAM) process guide

Description: Consistent direction for identification, long-term reporting and trending, and correction of conditions adverse to the environment, safety and health will facilitate a successful transition and follow- on for the Project Hanford Management Contractor (PHMC). Continuity of the corrective action management process is vital. It provides consistency via reporting and trending on corrective action management activities at the Site during the transition process. To ensure success, consideration of the… more

CP violation in top physics at the NLC

Description: Top quark is extremely sensitive to non-standard CP violating phases. General strategies for exposing different types of phases at the NLC are outlined. SUSY phase(s) cause PRA in t {yields} Wb. The transverse polarization of the {tau} in the reaction t {yields} b{tau}{nu} is extremely sensitive to a phase from the charged Higgs sector. Phase(s) from the neutral Higgs sector cause appreciable dipole moment effects and lead to sizable asymmetries in e{sup +}e{sup {minus}} {yields} t{anti t}H{sup… more

Crystalline structure in the confined-deconfined mixed phase: Neutron stars as an example

Description: We review the differences in first order phase transition of single and multi-component systems, and then discuss the crystalline structure expected to exist in the mixed confined deconfined phase of hadronic matter. The particular context of neutron stars is chosen for illustration. The qualitative results are general and apply for example to the vapor-liquid transition in subsaturated asymmetric nuclear matter.

D0 Silicon Upgrade: Thermal Analysis of the D0 3 CHIP Single Sided Ladder

Description: The design of the D0 single sided 3 chip ladder is shown in figures 1-3. The SVX II chips are mounted directly opposite the cooling channel so that they are most efficiently cooled. Outboard of the cooling channel on the ladder top side is mounted a flex hybrid of copper/kapton. which is adhered to a beryllium substrate using a two part epoxy. The beryllium substrate. aside from providing a solid mounting structure for the flex circuit. provides a thermal conduction path between the components … more

Development and testing of industrial scale, coal fired combustion system, Phase 3. Eighteenth quarterly technical progress report, April 1, 1996--June 30, 1996

Description: In the second quarter of calendar year 1996, 16 days of combust- boiler tests were performed, including 2 days of tests on a parallel DOE sponsored project on sulfur retention in a slagging combustor. Between tests, modifications and improvements that were indicated by these tests were implemented. This brings the total number of test days to the end of June in the task 5 effort to 28, increased to 36 as of the date of this Report, 8/18/96. This compares with a total of 63 test days needed to c… more

Development of a Fully Three-Dimensional Groundwater Flow Model for the A/M Area Using Data Fusion. Final report

Description: SRS was established in the 1950s to produce plutonium, tritium, and other nuclear materials. The purpose of this work was to obtain the distribution of the parameters that effect groundwater flow and to calibrate a model for subsequent use in the development of corrective action programs in the A/M area.

Development of improved x-ray optics for analytical x-ray microbeams. CRADA final report for CRADA Number Y-1294-0283

Description: The purpose of this CRADA was to develop improved glass capillary, x-ray optics for analytical x-ray microbeam applications. X-Ray Optical Systems, Inc. (XOS) designed and fabricated capillary optics and LMES tested those optics for x-ray microanalytical applications using its unique X-Ray Microprobe. Tapered capillaries with 3-{micro}m and 8-{micro}m output openings were fabricated and tested. The tapered capillaries had better spectral quality for x-ray microfluorescence (XRMF) analysis, than… more

Development of total uranium analytical method by L x-ray fluorescence

Description: This paper describes development of an L x-ray fluorescence technique to perform total uranium analysis using an internal excitation source which is added directly to the sample. The method has been demonstrated with synthetic U samples in the limited concentration range of 1g/l to 15g/l, and provides the advantages of simplicity, involving no mechanical parts which would normally be found in an external excitation source. Total uranium is determined by counting L x-rays fluoresced by a microCu… more

Divertor characterization experiments

Description: Recent DIII-D experiments with enhanced Scrape-off Layer (SOL) diagnostics permit detailed characterization of the SOL and divertor plasma under various operating conditions. We observe two distinct plasma modes: attached and detached divertor plasmas. Detached plasmas are characterized by plate temperatures of only 1 to 2 eV. Simulation of detached plasmas using the UEDGE code indicate that volume recombination and charge exchange play an important role in achieving detachment. When the power … more

Efficient second order remapping on arbitrary two dimensional meshes

Description: The authors have developed an efficient method of remapping physical variables from one unstructured grid composed of arbitrary polygons to another, based on the work of Ramshaw and Dukowicz. Eulerian cycles are used to convert the mesh into a single chain of connected edge,s which eliminates grid searching. The error is second order in the zone size. The algorithm handles degenerate meshes well. Computational effort to perform a remap scales linearly with the number of zones in the two grids, … more
