Absorption and Turnover Rates of Iron Measured by the Whole Body Counter

Description: Human iron metabolism has been extensively studied in the past twenty-five years with the radioisotopes iron⁵⁵ and iron⁵⁹. Before the availability of the whole body counter, however, iron absorption studies were performed by the indirect methods of fecal assay of unabsorbed radioiron, and estimation of red cell incorporation of absorbed tracer. The few long-term excretion studies performed required numerous assumptions, since human iron excretion was less well understood. Whole body counting pr… more

Analysis Of Activation Measurements Of Th$sup 232$ Resonance Captures In The Peach Bottom (40-MW(E) Prototype HTGR) Critical Assembly

Description: Measurements of thorium resonance-capture activations relative to those of Au/sup 197/, which were made in the Peach Bottom (HTGR) critical assembly, are analyzed and compared with thorium resonance activations calculated from tabulated values of the resonance parameters. The new vanadium-subtraction method that was applied is shown to measure thorium resonance captures relative to those of Au/sup 197/ to within several per cent in this geometry. The measurements show that the lowest several re… more

Automatic processing system for film badges

Description: A semiautomatic film badge system was developed to process dosimeter film faster and more reliably than the previously used manual method. The films are automatically loaded and unloaded from the badges and marked with identifying numbers, manually developed, and automatically read. The resultant information is punched into IBM cards. Automatic Temperature Control of Irradiation Capsules by a Variable Binary Gas Mixture

Description: Temperature control was achieved by varying the gas mixture, and therefore the thermal conductivity, in a gas annulus surrounding the irradiation capsule. Control systems were used for over one year and maintained capsule temperature to e due to uraniu 10 l F. The system may be used equally satisfactorily with either fueled or nonfueled capsules. The reliability of the system was extremely high, and all maintenance was limited to the readily accessible instrumentation. (auth)

Bimetallic Casting

Description: "Uranium and zirconium were bonded by melting the two metals in contact with one another in a bimetallic casting process. Tensile tests of specimens containing the original zone of interface between the two metals showed that all failures were at locations other than the interface. The coefficients obtained for diffusion between molten uranium and molten zirconium varied from 2.13 cm squared per day at 3,380 degrees F. to 9.17 cm squared per day at 3,510 degrees F. the activation energy for th… more

Boiling Points and Surface Tensions of Mixtures of Benzyl Acetate With Dioxan, Aniline and Meta-Cresol

Description: Technical report. From Abstract : "Accurate measurements on boiling points and surface tensions of mixtures of benzyl acetate with dioxan, aniline and meta-cresol over the entire range of concentration are reported. The results have been analysed in terms of quasi-crystalline model which is partially successful in representing the composition dependence of heats of mixing, boiling points and surface tension except for composition dependence of boiling points of benzyl acetate and meta-cresol."

Calculated fission product release from PRTR rupture

Description: Approximately 15 minutes after shutdown on August 21, 1962, evidence of a rupture was observed in the form of high radiation levels in the containment vessel and rupture monitor indications. Discharge of a special MgO-PuO{sub 2} test element revealed a cladding break of about 1.5 inches in length and about 1/4 inch wide in the widest place, located 36 inches from the top of the fuel element as it would have been oriented in the reactor. A visual examination in Radiometallurgy revealed that appr… more

CALCULATION OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR OPERATION OF REFRACTORY-METAL COMPONENTS AT HIGH TEMPERATURE IN VACUUM

Description: Equations based on kinetic theory relate the contamination of refractory metals in vacuum to the appropriate variables. Several examples are given for which the allowable system pressures are calculated. The examples illustrate the effect of varying several parameters. The importance of the sticking factor for active gases on hot refractory metals and its effect on the system design are discussed. The data for estimating the sticking factor for O/sub 2/ on Nb are given, along with some estimate… more

CERAMIC NUCLEAR FUELS IN THE SYSTEM ZrO$sub 2$-CaO-UO$sub 2$. Final Report

Description: Potential nuclear fuels in the system ZrO/sub 2/-CaO-UO/sub 2/ were investigated. Cubic fluorite-type solid solutions, as indicated by x-ray diffraction patterns, were formed by sintering CaO-stabilized ZrO/sub 2/ and U/ sub 3/O/sub 8/ compacts in either air or H/sub 2/. A continuous solid solution was found between urania and stabilized zirconia with H/sub 2/ sintering at 1750 deg C. Air sintering produced a limited region of solid solution in the stabilized zirconia portion of the system at 1… more

Chemical Processing Technology Quarterly Progress Report, April-June 1962

Description: Aqueous zirconium fuel processing studies, directed at adapting the hydrofluoric acid process to continuous dissolution-complexing in order to increase the capacity of the ICPP process, resulted in determination of dissolution rates over a wide range of conditions. The addition of oxidants to 4.8M hydrofluoric acid used for the continuous dissolution of 3% uranium-Zircaloy- 2 fuel decreased the amount of uranium-containing residue in the dissolver at the expense of a decreased dissolution rate.… more
