Airborne Radioactivity Survey of Part of the Navajo Indian Reservation of Utah and Arizona

Description: From introduction: The purpose of an airborne radioactivity survey is to locate ground areas of higher than normal radioactivity which might lead to discovery of uranium mineralization. For this type of survey, gamma-ray detection equipment employing either a geiger counter or a scintillation counter can be mounted in a fixed wing aircraft or a helicopter.

Attempts to Delineate Inborn Anemias in Mice. Progress Report and Fifth Renewal Proposal, Report Period: January 10, 1959-January 31, 1960. Renewal Period: May 1, 1960-April 30, 1961

Description: During the past year, three papers covering results of a major series of experiments on intergenotype of blood-forming tissue have appeared, demonstrating successful implantation of isologues normal cells in anemic hosts, permanently correcting their genetic defect in hematopoiesis, both with and without irradiation of the host. Heavy host irradiation was shown ineffective as preparations for implantation of homologous cells of widely different antigenic types.

Beneficiation of Monument Number 2 Ore Apache County, Arizona

Description: From introduction: The Monument No. 2 mine is in the Navajo Indian Reservation, Apache County, Arizona, about 20 miles southwest from the San Juan River at Mexican Hat, Utah, and 26 miles southwest from Mexican Water, Arizona. The property has been operated, since its discovery, by Vanadium Corporation of America, which holds a 10-year mining lease, granted through the Interior Department, to 43 acres of ground. History of the discovery of the deposit is vague, but reportedly it was first seen … more

The [beta]-Spectra of Pu²³⁹, Pu²⁴⁰, Pu²⁴¹and Sm¹⁵¹

Description: The [beta] spectrum of the 10-year Pu²⁴¹ was run on a sample of radiochemically pure plutonium containing the isotopes Pu²³⁹, Pu²⁴⁰, Pu²⁴¹, isotopically enriched in Pu²⁴¹ by pile neutron irradiation. The isotopic composition was determined mass spectrographically.

Carnotite Deposits near Edgemont, South Dakota

Description: From introduction: This report describes briefly the deposits of uranium ore discovered in June 1951 near Edgemont, Fall River County, South Dakota. It is a preliminary report, based upon rapid reconnaissance of a small area around the original discovery. It is intended for those who may be interested in further prospecting a large potential area and in developing and mining the deposits.

Complexing Agents for the Solvent Extraction of Uranium from Thorium. I. The Use of Thiocyanate in the Extraction of Uranium. II. The Use of Antipyrine in Solvent Extraction

Description: Abstract. In the first section of this technical report a new method of extracting uranium from thorium nitrate solution is discussed. This method consists of extracting an aqueous solution of thorium nitrate, nitric acid, sodium sulphate, and potassium thiocyanate with hexone. By this procedure, using an equal volume of hexone it is possible to extract 83 percent of the uranium while only 0.3 percent of the thorium is extracted. other experiments show that even greater separations are possi… more

Coulometric Titration Plutonium

Description: Abstract:"A method is described for the electroreduction of plutonium to the +3 valence state in a nitric acid-sulfamic acid solution. Exploratory experiments in the search for a coulometric titration of Pu(III) using electrolytically generated ceric ion are also described. The results strongly indicate that a convenient procedure can be devised. Suggestions for future work are presented."
