Final Report: Bioelectrochemical Process Development

Description: Work performed under the Independent Research and Development project ''Bioelectrochemical Process Development'' using Shewanella Oneidensis MR-1 henceforth MR-1, a model dissimilitory metal reducing (DMRB) bacteria successfully demonstrates the following: MR-1 transfers electrons by hydrogen oxidation to solid phase electrodes; MR-1 can act as an electron transfer agent when attached to a solid metal electrode surface - a modified electrode has been developed and tested; MR-1 transfers electro… more

Fourier Transforms of Pulses Containing Exponential Leading and Trailing Profiles

Description: In this monograph we discuss a class of pulse shapes that have exponential rise and fall profiles, and evaluate their Fourier transforms. Such pulses can be used as models for time-varying processes that produce an initial exponential rise and end with the exponential decay of a specified physical quantity. Unipolar examples of such processes include the voltage record of an increasingly rapid charge followed by a damped discharge of a capacitor bank, and the amplitude of an electromagnetic pul… more

A Free Trade Area of the Americas: Major Policy Issue and Status of Negotiations

Description: In 1994, 34 Western Hemisphere nations met at the first Summit of the Americas, envisioning a plan to complete a Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) by January 1, 2005. Faced with deadlocked negotiations, the United States and Brazil, the FTAA co-chairs, brokered a compromise at the November 2003 Miami trade ministerial. It moved the FTAA away from the comprehensive, single undertaking principle, toward a two-tier framework comprising a set of "common rights and obligations" for all countrie… more

Gas Storage Technology Consortium Quarterly Report

Description: Gas storage is a critical element in the natural gas industry. Producers, transmission and distribution companies, marketers, and end users all benefit directly from the load balancing function of storage. The unbundling process has fundamentally changed the way storage is used and valued. As an unbundled service, the value of storage is being recovered at rates that reflect its value. Moreover, the marketplace has differentiated between various types of storage services, and has increasingly r… more

Genomic Instability Induced by Low Dose Irradiation

Description: The goal of this project was to determine if genomic instability could be initiated by poorly repaired DNA damage induced by low doses of ionizing radiation leading to a mutator phenotype. Human cells were irradiated, then transfected with an unirradiated reporter gene at various times AFTER exposure. The vector carried an inactive GFP gene that fluoresced when the gene was activated by a delayed mutation. Fluorescent cells were measured in the interval of 50 hours to four days after transfecti… more

Groundwater Flow Model of the General Separations Area Using PORFLOW

Description: The E Area PA (McDowell-Boyer et al. 2000) includes a steady-state simulation of groundwater flow in the General Separations Area as a prerequisite for saturated zone contaminant transport analyses. The groundwater flow simulations are based on the FACT code (Hamm and Aleman2000). The FACT-based GSA model was selected during preparation of the original PA to take advantage of an existing model developed for environmental restoration applications at the SRS (Flach and Harris 1997, 1999; Flach 19… more

Hydrogen Isotope Exchange Tests in Support of HT-TCAP (U)

Description: Hydrogen isotope exchange kinetics of Pd/k was tested in laboratory scale columns to help troubleshoot the HT-TCAP performance problem. The main objective was to evaluate the effects of old and new Pd/k, column diameter, and metal foam on hydrogen isotope exchange efficiency. This efficiency affects the separation performance of the TCAP column. Three kinds of columns were used in the tests: (1) 3/4 inch pipe, 6 inch long, U-shape column. This column was used because it was readily available du… more

The Hydrostatic Mooring System. Quarterly Report for the Period April-June 2000

Description: The following topics are summarized for the 2nd quarter of 2000: (1) We amended the structural design of the buoy, moving the horizontal bulkhead from the bottom to the top of the buoy. (2) We designed the main bearing using Hilman Rollers. We discarded a parallel design using Lubron slide bearings due to concerns about keeping dirt out of the sliding surfaces. (3) We performed a preliminary failure tree risk analysis for the system as required by ABS. (4) We made various drawings of the system… more

Influence of Nitrate on the Hanford 100D Area In Situ Redox Manipulation Barrier Longevity

Description: The purpose of this laboratory study is to determine the influence of nitrate on the Hanford 100D Area in situ redox manipulation (ISRM) barrier longevity. There is a wide spread groundwater plume of 60 mg/L nitrate upgradient of the ISRM barrier with lower nitrate concentrations downgradient, suggestive of nitrate reduction occurring. Batch and 1-D column experiments showed that nitrate is being slowly reduced to nitrite and ammonia. These nitrate reduction reactions are predominantly abiotic,… more
