Amplitude and phase modulation with waveguide optics

Description: We have developed amplitude and phase modulation systems for glass lasers using integrated electro-optic modulators and solid state high- speed electronics. The present and future generation of lasers for Inertial Confinement Fusion require laser beams with complex temporal and phase shaping to compensate for laser gain saturation, mitigate parametric processes such as transverse stimulated Brillouin scattering in optics, and to provide specialized drive to the fusion targets. These functions c… more

Application of MXCD to magnetic thin-film sensors

Description: While Magnetic X-ray Circular Dichroism (MXCD) has been applied extensively to the extraction of elemental magnetic moments in various magnetic multilayers, the configuration of actual devices imposes certain constraints on the application of MXCD to devices. Using a set of real, thin-film spin valve devices with varying Cu spacer layer thicknesses, we demonstrate the correlation between MXCD and R-H measurements on those devices as well as the restrictions on the interpretation of MXCD data im… more

CALDERON COKEMAKING PROCESS/DEMONSTRATION PROJECT

Description: This project which deals with the demonstration of a full size commercial coking retort using Calderon's proprietary technology for making metallurgical coke ran into a commercialization problem by virtue that the designed retort for two (2) tons of coke/hour necessitates thirty-two (32) retorts to produce the 500,000 tons of coke per year for a commercial plant. Bechtel Mining and Metals prepared a cost estimate of the commercial plant which indicated the commercial plant would not be economic… more

Character and origins of ground rupturing and ground deformation during the 28 June 1992 Landers, California earthquake (as well as the 1989 Loma Prieta and 1994 Northridge earthquakes). Final report

Description: The overall objective of the research has been to understand the form and significance of surface rupture produced by earthquakes. Specific objectives are to describe fracturing and other manifestations of broad belts of ground rupture during the Landers earthquake and to mechanically analyze the structures that form along the belts. The author has learned much about ground rupture during earthquakes, even though he has studied only three earthquakes to date: Loma Prieta, Landers and Northridge. more

China, Congress, and Sanctions - Findings of a Workshop-Seminar

Description: The People's Republic of China (PRC)'s provocative use of military force in the Taiwan Strait has appeared to subside, but not before convincing many in the Congress that the PRC regime continues to flout international norms sensitive to the United States. In addition to challenging stability in the Taiwan Strait, the PRC is seen recently to undermine important U.S. interests regarding nuclear proliferation, intellectual property rights, and missile proliferation. As a result, many in the Congr… more

A collisional-radiative average atom model for hot plasmas

Description: A collisional-radiative `average atom` (AA) model is presented for the calculation of opacities of hot plasmas not in the condition of local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE). The electron impact and radiative rate constants are calculated using the dipole oscillator strengths of the average atom. A key element of the model is the photon escape probability which at present is calculated for a semi infinite slab. The Fermi statistics renders the rate equation for the AA level occupancies nonlinear… more

Comment on {open_quotes}superfluid anisotropy in YBCO: Evidence for pair tunneling superconductivity{close_quotes}

Description: Recently, Xiang and Wheatley extended our proximity coupling SN model of the (S) CuO{sub 2} plane and (N) CuO chain layers in YBCO compounds, using the single particle bands {epsilon}{sup 0}{sub 1k} = -t(cos k{sub a} + cos k{sub b}) - {mu}{sub 1} and {epsilon}{sup 0}{sub 2k} = -t{sub 2y}cos k{sub b} - {mu}{sub 2}, respectively. Although we showed that it was possible to fit the penetration depth {lambda}{sub ab}(T) in twinned YBCO with either s- or d-wave pairing and both bands free-particle-li… more

Compact IR laser for calibration of space based sensors

Description: An Er:YAG laser, operating at 2.94 microns, has been developed for in-theater calibration of space based infrared sensors. The laser is used to illuminate a spaceborne sensor focal plane from a surveyed ground reference point. The known reference point is compared to the laser position reported by the sensor, and boresight corrections are made. The Er:YAG laser is side pumped by a InGaAs diode array and is tuned to an atmospheric microwindow with and intracavity etalon. This technology is being… more

CSER 96-023: CSER for PFP glovebox HC-21A with 4.4 kilogram plutonium cans

Description: This criticality safety evaluation report addresses the criticality impact of increasing plutonium oxide content from 2.5 kg oxide storage cans to 5.0 kg oxide Pu storage cans. Glovebox HC-21A is used to move plutonium metal buttons from cans into furnace boats prior to transferring them to the muffle furnace gloveboxes. Glovebox HC-21A supports muffle furnace operations where plutonium buttons are burned to form paw, (H/Pu < 2). The paw, is returned to glovebox HC-21A and sieved and packed int… more

Development of a Monolithic, Multi-MEMS Microsystem on a Chip Demonstrating iMEMs VLSI Technology. R and D Status Report Number 10, January 1--March 31, 1996

Description: This quarter saw the first silicon from the iMEMS{reg_sign} test chip, with complete circuits and beam structures. The wafers looked fine cosmetically and the circuits functioned as designed, but the beams suffered an anomaly that the authors have never seen before. Diagnostic work is under way to sort out the root cause, and other wafers are coming out this quarter to see if it was a one-time anomaly. Work on the process-development front has slowed because of the construction of a dedicated f… more

Discrete optimization of isolator locations for vibration isolation systems: An analytical and experimental investigation

Description: An analytical and experimental study is conducted to investigate the effect of isolator locations on the effectiveness of vibration isolation systems. The study uses isolators with fixed properties and evaluates potential improvements to the isolation system that can be achieved by optimizing isolator locations. Because the available locations for the isolators are discrete in this application, a Genetic Algorithm (GA) is used as the optimization method. The system is modeled in MATLAB{trademar… more

Effects of Flat Taxes and Other Proposals on Housing: An Overview

Description: Studies have estimated that some of these revisions would cause a decline in demand for houses and significant reduction in house prices--perhaps in excess of 15 percent. These studies, however, presumed a fixed supply of housing; even a limited supply response would greatly decrease predicted asset price effects. Supply response is likely to be large in the long run and not insignificant in the short run. Effects on housing demand might also be mitigated by increases in savings rates and lower… more
