9-Zoom : A One-Dimensional, Multigroup, Neutron Diffusion Theory Reactor Code for the IBM 709

Description: The following document describes the usage and purpose of the neutron diffusion theory reactor program 9-Zoom, a memory-contained program that takes advantage of 709 features such as, for example, preferential order of multiply by zero, and for small problems approaches input-output limitations with excellent convergence properties.

The Biological Behavior of Organic Compounds Containing Radiophosphorus

Description: The study was undertaken with the objective of observing the distribution in the rat of organic compounds of phosphorus labelled with the P32 isotope as tracer. The fate of several of these compounds was studied in animals bearing tumors. The distribution of inorganic phosphate in animal tissues is well known but was included in this work for comparison with the organic phosphorus compounds.

Color Production From Energetic Ions Impinging On Metals

Description: It has been observed that energetic gaseous ions mark their region of impingement on certain metals in color. Under identical conditions of bombardment, multicharged ions of the same gas mark their impact areas with different colors. The colors are sensitive to the type and energy of the ion as well as to the metal bombarded. These colors may result from reflections from thin films formed by reactions at the target. Because the colors indicate that thicker films are produced with increased ion … more

Gamma Rays from Inelastic Scattering of 14-Mev Neutrons on Pb²⁰⁸

Description: Abstract: "The cross section for the production of 2.61-Mev gamma rays from the Pb-208(n, n')Pb-208* reaction has been measured for five different angles from 50 to 130 degrees. The angular distribution appears to be isotropic within the precision of the experiments, and leads to an integrated cross section of 25.5 +/- 4.6 millibarns."

High Energy Fission and Spallation of Uranium

Description: From introduction: "This report is an attempt to examine, semiquantitavely, the way the competition between neutron emission and fission varies for heavy nuclei as a function of nuclear type and excitation energy. Many of the ideas herein are the results of discussions with R. H. Goeckermann and W. Heckrotte of the University of California Radiation Laboratory."

Plowshare Program : Peaceful Uses for Nuclear Explosives

Description: The concept of thermonuclear explosives as a potentially cheap and almost inexhaustible energy source for mankind's non military needs has for several years been under active consideration at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory. Many of the proposed peaceful applications involve underground nuclear explosions, and several experiments at the AEC Nevada Test Site have provided valuable insight into the phenomenology of such explosions. Among the possible uses currently under consideration are excav… more

The Prompt Radiations in the Spontaneous Fission of Cf²⁵² (Revised)

Description: Summary: The radiations emitted in the spontaneous fission of Cf²⁵² have been studied. The results in general are in agreement with other similar measurements. An experiment is described which is expected to give the neutron energies and angular distribution in the center-of-mass system of the moving fission fragment when the analysis is completed.

Pulsed Neutron Measurement of Control Rod Worth

Description: Reactivity measurements made by the pulsed neutron technique were compared with results obtained by conventional techniques. The pulsed neutron results were in good agreement with those obtained by stable period measurement and rod drop. Differential effectiveness of partially inserted rods was shown to be well represented by elementary perturbation theory. Finally, the pulsed neutron technique was found to be the only good method for measurement of large reactivity changes.

Radioactive Waste Disposal

Description: Abstract: This is a selective bibliography of books and periodical articles relating to radioactive waste disposal. Material in the bibliography is concerned primarily with methods for the handling and disposal of wastes and the results of these methods. Auxiliary material indicating methods of determining radioactivity in wastes has been included. Sources consulted include: Chemical Abstracts, 1950-1955; Engineering Index, 1950-1955; Industrial Arts Index 1950-March 1957; Nuclear Science Abstr… more

The RCA 6949 As A Self-Excited Cyclotron Oscillator

Description: The oscillator of the 88-in. cyclotron which is being built in Berkeley is tunable from 5.3 to 16.5 Mc. It delivers a maximum c-w power of 300 kw. At the rated doc voltage of 75 kv the resonator stores 4.5 joules of electrical energy. The transients produced by this amount of energy, during sparking, place unusual requirements upon the design of the oscillator tube. The features of the RCA 6949 which make it particularly well-suited to this type of application are discussed in this paper. Other… more

The [Sigma/Alpha] Branching Ratio Of [Y*1]

Description: Recently a T=1 resonance in the [Alpha w] system called [Y*1] has been observed with a mass of 1385 Mev. Two types of resonances have been predicted that might relate this observation to other elementary-particle interactions: (1) P 3/2 resonances in the Alpha w and Sigma w systems predicted by global symmetry corresponding to the (3/2, 3/2) resonance of the wN system, (2) a spin-1/2 Y-w resonance resulting from a bound state in the KN system. The position and width of the observed [Y*1] resona… more

Tests on a High Current R.F. Joint in Vacuum

Description: An R.F. joint tester was designed to determine the relative heating and tendency toward arching at high RF current density (100 amps/linear inch) of a 12 inch diameter circular copper butt joint in vacuum with several types of inserts and at various amounts of axial loading, ranging from a very small contact pressure to one of 1400 pounds per linear inch of joint.

Trajectory-Wise Analysis of Immobilized Plasma Including Electrons. Machine Calculations

Description: Abstract: "The trajectory analysis of an immobilized plasma has been generalized to include the presence of electrons having a far similar radius of gyration and, therefore, fitting readily into the broader scale structure established by the ions. This problem has been adapted to machine calculations and the results for various strengths plasmas have been calculated."
