APPLIED HEALTH PHYSICS SEMI-ANNUAL REPORT FOR JULY 1956-DECEMBER 1956

Description: Routine monitoring procedures are summarized. Based on samples collected by continuous air monitors, the wcekly average value for air contamiration in the laboratory area was 1.98 x 10/sup -12/ mu c/cc. Radioactive fall-out was determined by measuring the total activity and total number of particles collected on gum paper fall-out trays. Two peak periods of activity in July and September were concluded to be the result of weapons tests. Meteorological data are tabulated. Data are included from … more

An approach to the study of solid state bonding

Description: The program objective has been to investigate the possible similarity between a bond interface and a grain boundary. The criterion for establishing the similarity of a bond interface and a grain boundary was the migration characteristics of the boundary under the influence of controlled orientation, strain level, temperature and time. In addition, the orientation dependency of the "threshold", or minimum deformation, for bonding would have to be determined. The initial bonding studies were to … more

An Aqua Recia Flowsheet for Uranium Dissolution

Description: Relatively long time cycles are required for the standard nitric acid dissolution of enriched uranium using safe batch size techniques for criticality control. Upwards of forty eight hours are required for the total dissolution of solid of I and E enriched slugs in nitric acid. The dissolution capacity may be increased by: (1) using a dissolver critically safe by virtue of its geometry or, (2)increasing the rate of uranium dissolution. Dilute agua regia -- a mixture of hydrochloric and nitric a… more

Argonne High-Flux Research Reactor-Ahfr Conceptual Design Study

Description: This report presents a reactor design to meet the needs of the basic research program at Argonne National Laboratory. The program requires some irradiations in thermal neutron flux approaching 5 x 10/sup 15/n/ (cm/sup 2/ )(sec) and some beam experiments having over 10/sup 15/ n/(cm/sup 2/) available. Parametric studies indicate that the highest peak thermal flux per unit of reactor power can be obtained in an internal H/sub 2/ reflector having a radius of about 6 cm. Since the design effonts re… more

ART--a Program for the Treatment of Reactor Thermal Transients on the IBM- 704

Description: A description is given of a program by which the behavior of a nuclear reactor during various thermal transients may be studied. The program is written for a 32,000-word IBM-704 computer with six tape units. It is designed to predict the behavior of a water-cooled and moderated reactor with flat plate fuel elements during transients which are slower than a prompt excursion and during which the reactor flow. inlet temperature, and control rod motion may be specified as a function of time. Artificial cooling of the Columbia River by dam regulation: Part 1

Description: In early July 1958, it appeared that Columbia River temperatures at HAPO would be near 24--50{degree}C by the end of August. River temperatures were averaging 40 to 50{degree}C above 1957 figures and were 3{degree} to 4{degree} above the ten year highs. It seemed desirable to examine the problem to determine if any corrective measure could be taken, since it was apparent that production losses were imminent. The large storage of cold water behind Grand Coulee Dam, normally untapped, was a sourc… more

Artificial Cooling of the Columbia River By Dam Regulation Part 1

Description: In early July, 1958, it appeared that Columbia River temperature at HAPO would be near 24.5ºC by the end of August. River temperature were averaging 4º to 5º above 1957 figures and were 3º to 4º above the ten year highs. It seemed desirable to examine the problem to determine if any corrective measure could be taken, since it was apparent that production losses were imminent.

Artificial cooling of the Columbia River by dam regulation. Part 3

Description: The temperatures of the Columbia River was reduced 1 to 30 Centigrade with beneficial effects at HAPO. It is reasonable to expect that future benefits may be possible. It is desirable that the temperature of the river be controlled each year to the maximum extent possible. Instrumentation improvements requested to effect optimum savings. Records of river temperatures and flows should continue to be maintained by IPD as a necessary part of temperature optimization. Where possible, the coincident… more

Asbestos: A Materials Survey

Description: Report issued by the U.S. Bureau of Mines discussing asbestos mining. As stated in the introduction, "this report gives primary consideration to the types and grades of asbestos that are of greatest importance in the program of military preparedness-namely, the spinning grades of chrysotile, both foreign and domestic, and the amosite and crocidolite obtained only from foreign sources" (p. 1). This report includes tables, maps, illustrations, and photographs.

Atmospheric Signals From Explosions and Their Interpretation

Description: Results are reported from a series of experimental highexplosive shots under inversion conditions at the Nevada Test Site which were made in an attempt to refine blast prediction techniques. Applications of the data in determinations of the amount of energy which remains in the blast wave as it reaches acoustic level and in determinations of the magnitude of the reflection factor when the blast wave strikes the ground are discussed. Data on shock wave propagation are presented graphically. It i… more

Atmospheric Turbulence

Description: Some characteristics of turbulence near the ground can begin to be interpreted There is yet little information about others (even near the ground) such as spectra measured along the vertical lines, or cross spectra between two variables. Further, results of turbulence characteristics over water are few and confusing, and no information exists about the effects of cities and deserts. As we go aloft, our information about spectra becomes more scanty, although the general areas of large turbulence… more

Attempted Modification of Susceptibility of Tumors to X-Radiation : Final Report for August 1 1957 to August 31, 1959

Description: Attempts to secure a high degree of synchronization of cell division of the Krebs mouse ascites carcinoma, by combined use of aminopterin and citrovorum factor, and by use of colchicine and N-acetyl colchinol, were unsuccessful. In the course of the work, a new method for securing smears of ascites tumor cells was out, which we believe will be found useful

AN AUTOMATIC GAS CHROMATOGRAPH FOR MONITORING OF REACTOR FUEL FAILURES. PART I. DESIGN

Description: A device was developed for detecting the failure of a fuel element in a reactor by monitoring for the presence of gaseous fission products. Small amounts of gaseous fission products were detected in the presence of radioactive argon by separating the fission product gases from the argon by chromatography. An automatic sequencing device was provided for taking samples at short intervals to ensure rapid detection of failures. (auth)
