W- and Z-boson production at ep colliders

Description: We briefly summarize the results of a comprehensive study of W and Z production in high energy ep collisions. The processes ep [yields] vWX[sup [plus minus]]X, ep [yields] vW[sup [minus]]X, ep [yields] eZX and ep [yields] vZX are investigated. The region of small momentum transfer in eW and eZ production, with a fermion exchanged in the u-channel, is treated using the photon structure function approach, and carefully matched to the deep inelastic region. Low momentum photon exchange contributio… more

The Westinghouse Waste Isolation Division Management and Supervisor Training Program

Description: The Westinghouse Waste Isolation Division (WID) is the management and operating contractor (MOC) for the Department of Energy`s (DOE`s) Waste Isolation Plant (WIPP). Managers and supervisors at DOE facilities such as the WIPP are required to complete extensive training. To meet this requirement, WID created a self-paced, self-study program known as Management and Supervisor Training (MAST). All WID managers and supervisors are required to earn certification through the MAST program. Selected em… more

Wire chamber gases

Description: In this paper, we describe new developments in gas mixtures which have occurred during the last 3--4 years. In particular, we discuss new results on the measurement and modeling of electron drift parameters, the modeling of drift chamber resolution, measurements of primary ionization and the choice of gas for applications such as tracking, single electron detection, X-ray detection and visual imaging. In addition, new results are presented on photon feedback, breakdown and wire aging.

World energy: Building a sustainable future

Description: As the 20th century draws to a close, both individual countries and the world community face challenging problems related to the supply and use energy. These include local and regional environmental impacts, the prospect of global climate and sea level change associated with the greenhouse effect, and threats to international relations in connection with oil supply or nuclear proliferation. For developing countries, the financial cost of providing energy to provide basic needs and fuel economic… more

X-ray studies of microstructures in semiconductors and superconducting materials

Description: Objective is to use synchrotron x rays to probe short-range-order (SRO) structures in these materials. These SRO structures, with a scale of a few angstroms, include these around interfaces in multilayers, strain and local environs around impurity or constituent atoms, as well as lattice mismatch, intermixing of atoms across interfaces, annealing, etc. A new soft x-ray detector has been built and was used to measure x-ray fluorescence from O and F in bulk materials. The research on microstructu… more

YBa sub 2 Cu sub (3-x) Co sub x O sub y : A substrate material for YBCO superconductors

Description: The physical properties of the ceramic YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub (3-x)}Co{sub x}O{sub y} have been investigated in order to evaluate its usefulness as a substrate material for YBCO superconductors. YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub (3-x)}Co{sub x}O{sub y} has been found to be thermally and chemically compatible with 123 and displays adequate electrical properties for a substrate material. A material with the nominal composition of YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 2.2}Co{sub 0.8}O{sub 7} was investigated, extensively. The mechanical pro… more

Zirconia-based fuel cells for power generation

Description: This paper reviews the design and operation of the high temperature solid oxide fuel cells based on yttria-stabilized zirconia electrolyte. The functional requirements of the various cell components are presented; and the materials and fabrication processes used for different cell components are described. Finally, the recent progress made toward commercialization of these cells for clean and efficient power generation is discussed.
