300 Area, January 22--January 28

Description: Progress is reported on the topics of extrusion and canning. The information on canning is broken down into: Production test 313-74-M, studies of aluminium cans, selection of surface rejection standards, thorium, and the effect of high and low tin in bronze on tin carry-over to canning bath.

Biochemical Survey Section report for the month of June 1946

Description: Research progress was reported in the following areas: (1) plutonium ingestion studies - rates of excretion, fecal and urinary, were determined for subjects who had drunk a solution containing plutonium; and (2) plutonium therapy studies - rats injected with plutonium were administered zirconium citrate and the rate of excretion of the plutonium measured. (ACR)

Characteristics of a Sealed Internally Balanced Aileron from Tests of a 1/4-Scale Partial-Span Model of the Republic XF-12 Airplane in the Langley 19-Foot Pressure Tunnel

Description: This paper presents the results of the aileron investigation and includes rolling-moment, yawing-moment, and aileron hinge-moment coefficients and pressure coefficients across the aileron-balance seal through a range of angle of attack, tab deflection, and aileron deflection with flaps neutral and deflected 20 degrees and 55 degrees. Some of the effects of wing roughness and balance seal leakage on the aileron and tab characteristics are also presented.

Columbia River Temperature Survey at Hanford Engineer Works: Preliminary Report

Description: It was agreed during a meeting on July 10, 1945 that an investigation should be made by the Technical Department to determine how fast and in what fashion the temperature of the effluent water from the 100 Areas is dissipated in the columbia River. A preliminary report on this investigation is submitted herewith for review by interested parties.

Cylinder-Temperature Correlation of a Single-Cylinder Liquid-Cooled Engine

Description: "An analysis based on nonboiling forced-convection heat-transfer theory is made of the cooling processes in liquid-cooled engine cylinders. Semiempirical equations that relate the average head and barrel temperatures with the primary engine and coolant parameters are derived. A correlation method based on these equations is applied to data obtained from previously reported investigations, which were conducted over large ranges of engine and coolant conditions with two liquid-cooled cylinders us… more

The Detection of Small Amounts of Fluorine in Large Amounts of Chlorine

Description: Abstract: "Tests have been developed for both the qualitative detection and quantitative determination of fluorine in chlorine. The qualitative test is made by passing the gas through manganous chloride. If the pink solid tubes brown there is greater than 0.5 percent of fluorine in the gas. The quantitative test is a modification of the Steiger and Marvin Test with oxidized titanium solution."

The Determination of Tuballoy in the Presence of Thorium in Peroxide Effluents and Cakes

Description: Abstract: "A polarographic method for the determination of tuballoy in thorium peroxide cakes in all sold medium was found to give satisfactory results. Fluorescent analyses on effluents containing thorium gave good results if the thorium content was kept below 1 mg/liter."

The Distribution of Precious Metals in Various Residues Obtained in the Preparation of Uranyl Nitrate From Pitchblende

Description: A study was made of the distribution of Ag, Au, Bt, and Pd in the residues from an extraction process in which purified UO/sub 2/(NO/sub 3/)/sub 2/ is prepared from a pitchblende ore. The residues studied were the gangue Pb cake, the BaSO/sub 4/ cake, the filtrate boildown cake, the raffinate cake, and the purified UO/sub 2/(NO/sub 3/)/sub 2/. Samples representing three different batches of ore were used. The following conclusions were reached: (1) neither Ag nor Pd are present in the ore in si… more

An Estimation of the Flying Qualities of the Kaiser Fleetwing All-Wing Airplane from Tests of a 1/7-Scale Model, TED No. NACA 2340

Description: "An investigation of a 1/7-scale powered model of the Kaiser Fleetwing all-wing airplane was made in the Langley full-scale tunnel to provide data for an estimation of the flying qualities of the airplane. The analysis of the stability and control characteristics of the airplane has been made as closely as possible in accordance with the requirements of the Bureau of Aeronautics, Navy Department's specifications, and a summary of the more significant conclusions is presented as follows. With th… more

A Non-Gravimetric Method for the Determination of Uranium on Platinum Discs

Description: From abstract: "This paper discusses a method for the determination of uranium on platinum discs which does not involve direct weighing of the deposited film. A statistical analysis of the results obtained indicates that the procedure is more consistent than that based on a gravimetric method and offers a relatively quick and convenient means for obtaining uranium assay results where an accuracy of approximately 99% is desired."
