[The Suitability of Five Denton County Clays for Use in High School Ceramics Classes: Plates]: Plates of ceramic samples to accompany a thesis studying the suitability of five clays from the vicinity of Denton, Texas for use in high-school ceramics classes. The abundance of natural clays in Denton County and throughout the state of Texas, the ease with which clays may be obtained, and the ease with which they may be refined for use provide almost unlimited teaching possibilities in high-school art classes. This study of five Denton County clays has proved informative in several respects. It has shown that within the vicinity of Denton there are clays that are suitable for high-school use. Although all these clays may be suitable for one technique of pottery making each may not be suitable for all techniques. Many clays may be used after refining by a simple, quick process without the use of expensive and complicated equipment. Simple glazes, which have an aesthetic as well as a utilitarian value, may be compounded to fit these clays.

An Evaluation of Present Practice in the Education of School Music Teachers in Texas: For a long time there has been a growing conviction among the music graduates from colleges in Texas that the training of music teachers has been limited both from the standpoint of the number of hours offered in music for a degree and of the adequacy of the training received. The trends in music teacher education in Texas need to be evaluated in order to determine whether or not teacher training in this state is adequate. In comparing the adequacy of the school curriculum as far as the number of hours and courses is concerned, McEachern's A Survey and Evaluation of the Education of School Music Teachers in the United States will be used as a source of comparison, since this study is inclusive of the curricula of colleges over the United States.

Smith County is located in the pine and post oak belts of Northeastern Texas and is the fourth county southward from the Oklahoma boundary and the third county westward from the Louisiana state line. A Study of Personnel Policies in North Texas State Teachers College as Compared With Those of Twenty-Five Other Institutions of Higher Learning: This study of personnel policies in college and universities includes such phrases as administrative control, classification and distribution of positions, selection and appointment, terms of employment, teaching loads, and appraisal and interpretation of personnel policies. This study is planned to provide data on the policies with regard to the non-teaching staff as well as those of the teaching staff. From this study the writer concludes that strong personnel policies are not being developed by the twenty-five colleges and universities studied. The administrative officers apparently are largely unaware of the vital needs of such policies, and the members of the staff are reported to have little representation in formulating the policies which are adopted. Furthermore, it is evident that colleges and universities are not taking the lead in the unification of personnel policies in institutions of higher learning, and the worth of each individual employed by the institutions is not being recognized.
Print Making in the Junior High School: The general purpose of this investigation is to examine the values of print making as compared with drawing and painting in their respective relationships as a part of the junior-high-school art program. The specific purposes of the investigation are: 1. To determine the values which are common to both the print-making arts and the drawing-painting arts. 2. To discover the values which are unique in the print-making arts. 3. To determine which of the print-making processes belong in the junior high school. 4. To recommend the grade placement and limitations of print-making for the junior high school. A conservative general conclusion, based upon objective evidence, can safely be drawn to the effect that in all phases of the learning experiences print making was found to be as valuable as painting and drawing. Its values were compared with respect to specific art development, to general educational growth, to socialization, and to character training.
A Study of the Native Texas Clays Relative to Their Value for Pottery Making in the Public Schools: The art of making pottery has long been recognized as a valuable educational activity, both for its cultural value and for the opportunity it presents for creative activity. However, the impression is prevalent among school teachers and administrators that the making of pottery requires the purchase of raw material as well as an expensive kiln. For this reason few schools have given pottery making a place in school activities. Experiments with Texas clays have shown conclusively that pottery making is a comparatively simple and inexpensive undertaking. The purpose of this study is to present and evaluate these experiments so that other Texas teachers may utilize them in their work, especially in the elementary art classes of the public schools.
Personal Study and Comparative Analysis of the Track Men and the Football Men at North Texas State Teachers College for the Period of Ten Years (1930-1940): This study deals with an investigation of letterman in track in North Texas State Teachers College during the ten- year period of 1930-31 through 1939-40, as compared with football lettermen of the same period. More especially, it is a study of the program, the accomplishments, and the later occupations followed by the individual athletes who earned letters in track. The status of the athletes was considered from the standpoint of their athletic and scholastic attainments as well as their social activities while in college, The athletes were also considered from the standpoint of position and location since leaving college. It is recommended that in the near future a similar study be made of the other sports in North Texas State College to parallel this study.

A Home Beautification Project Developed by the Art Club of the Travis Elementary School in Mineral Wells, Texas: For three years the writer has worked with children from a section in Mineral Wells, Texas, in which home environments were unnecessarily bad. They offered none of the wholesome stimuli for growth and development that homes should give. The houses were drab and cheerless, and the grounds were neglected, often grown up in weeds or cluttered with trash. Through its members, made up of sixth and seventh grade children of Travis Elementary School and including children from the affected homes, plans and procedures were formulated for improving homes, and the interest and cooperation of the parents were secured in extending the improvements over the area. By this plan the writer hoped that life might be made more satisfying for these people as a result of improved surroundings.
The History of Education of Wise County: The purpose of this study was to collect, organize, and present information pertaining to the development of the educational system of Wise County, Texas. While there has been much interest in the collecting of material and information that relates to the early history, as well as much knowledge of the historical development, data concerning the educational progress of the county have been neglected by historians. It is important that this neglect be remedied. Since the history of education is of a professional nature, the collection, the preservation, and the interpretation of the historical information may be considered the special duty of the persons who are in some way connected with the educational system
A Chemical, Physical and Biological Investigation of the Total Suspended and Dissolved Substances in Lake Dallas with Emphasis on Sanitation: The purpose of this investigation is to determine the suspended organic matter and the total phosphorus in the waters of Lake Dallas and to evaluate these findings. Since organic matter floating in lakes is largely comprised of minute plants, animals, and detritus derived from animals and plants, the fertilizing effect of phosphorus must be considered as an integral part of this problem.
The Indigenous Architecture of Fredericksburg, Texas: In this study sixteen early stone buildings at Fredericksburg, Texas, are described and evaluated as examples of indigenous architecture. Chapter II presents a brief history of the founding of Fredericksburg. Chapter III presents a description of the town site and a discussion of the native materials as used by the pioneer immigrants in the construction of residences and other buildings. Chapter IV is devoted to a detailed description of fourteen buildings as specific examples of the indigenous architecture. Representative photographs of the buildings as they now appear, as well as floor plans, illustrate the text. Two early churches of the indigenous type, accompanied by photographs and floor plans, are discussed in Chapter V. In Chapter VI a summary of the study is given and conclusions are presented.
A Study of Superstitions and Customs Affecting Health Practices Among the People of Starr County, Texas: Because superstitions and customs of the people of Starr County, Texas, have a bearing on health practices that affect their well-being, the purpose of this study is to explain the deep-rooted superstitions and customs adhered to by the settlers. In order to understand more fully the cultural factors which relate to health, it is necessary to study the lives and customs of the people of Starr County. An effort has been made to look at their problems, not from a critical standpoint, but from the standpoint of helping the people and of viewing them sympathetically. A keen interest in the health practices of the people of Starr County, Texas, originated in tracing superstitions and customs in relation to the backward condition of these people. This thesis is a report of the writer's findings of those superstitions and customs as viewed by one who has lived in the county for six years.
The Growth and Development of the Recreation Program of Fort Worth, Texas as a Related Factor to the Growth of the City from 1888 to 1947: This study was made to show the relationship of the growth and development of the city, and the park system to the recreation movement of Fort Worth, Texas from 1873-1947. This information was gathered from the following sources: annexation files of the city secretary and city engineer, annual reports of the city of Fort Worth, Texas, the charter of the city of Fort Worth, Texas, the History of Fort Worth Park system, the minutes of Public Recreation Board, and the personnel of city officials.
Effecting a Guidance Program in the Nocona, Texas, High School: This study is a reflection of the efforts made by faculty members of the Nocona, Texas High School, with the aid of two outside evaluating committees, to set up a workable and practical plan for executing personnel problems and policies in the school. The major portion of this investigation centers around the evaluations made of the guidance service in 1940 and 1942 and the re-evaluation made in 1947.
History, Organization, and Unit Costs of the North Texas State College Bookbindery: This study is a discussion and description of the history, organization, and unit costs of the North Texas State College bookbindery, together with a comparison of these unit costs with charges made by commercial bookbinders for similar services. These are the three outstanding purposes of this problem: 1. to record briefly a history of the North Texas State College Bookbindery, 2. to describe the organization of the N. T. S. C. Bookbindery, including the personnel policies and clerical routines now in effect in its operation, and 3. to determine the unit costs of various types of services rendered by the N. T. S. C. Bookbindery and compare these unit costs with price lists of commercial bookbinders for similar services. It is intended that this study may be used as a guide to those who may contemplate setting up small bookbinderies and as a reference tool to future managers of the N. T. S. C. Bookbindery.
Popular Choices in Modern Printed Textiles on the Dallas Market: In order to develop a program whereby people can be educated to appreciate and choose the best contemporary designs among the many textiles that are available, it is necessary to know which types of textiles, if any, among those designed in the modern manner, the public accepts, which it rejects, and the factors that influence selection. This study was made to discover those factors -- such as color, subject matter, and utility -- that determine popular choices in a representative group of well-designed modern printed textiles which were available on the Dallas market. The textiles were placed on public exhibition at the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts.
Development of Vocational Rehabilitation in Texas: The purpose of this study has been to trace the development of the program of Vocational Rehabilitation for disabled individuals administered by the State Board for Vocational Education from 1929-1949. It has included a review of the historical background and shown the various rehabilitation services offered. This thesis is an attempt to make a careful study of the establishment, growth and development of vocational rehabilitation in Texas. It is recognized that there are many efforts directed toward vocational rehabilitation in Texas, but this study is to be confined to the development or the State-Federal Program administered by the Texas State Board for Vocational Education. It is further limited to the rehabilitation efforts of the Rehabilitation Division of the State Board for Vocational Education exclusive of the rehabilitation of the blind and the work of the Crippled Children's Division. the rehabilitation or the blind is excluded because it is generally accepted that the problems in connection with the rehabilitation of the blind are peculiar to the blind. The work of the Crippled Children's Division is excluded even though the services rendered by that Division were administered by the Rehabilitation Division until July 1, 1945 because theses have been written tracing the development or the work of that Division. These theses have been reviewed in preparing this study.
A Study of Juvenile Delinquency in Montague County, Texas, During 1947-1948: The problem of this study was to analyze the following five factors related to juvenile delinquency in Montague County, Texas, during 1947 and 1948: first, causes and control of juvenile delinquency; second, personal data about thirty-three juvenile offenders; third, their offenses; fourth, disposition made of the charges by the judge of the juvenile court; and fifth, the present behavior status of the offenders.
The Texas Reformatory System with Emphasis on the Gatesville School for Boys: At least one state function is handled differently in most all of the forty-eight sovereign states. This function is that of juvenile control, or the care of juvenile delinquents. The states vary a great deal in their methods of combating juvenile delinquency and in the operation of their reformatories, and most of these systems are in crying need of reform. Many are the forgotten chore of state administrators, and others are the thorn in the side of the state's political administration. The latter is the case in the state of Texas.
The Need for Co-Operation Among Independent Food Retailers of Denton, Texas: It has become more and more evident that independent food retailers must co-ordinate their individual efforts if they are to gain an operating efficiency paralleling that of the corporate multiple-unit or chain system. Such co-ordination largely has taken three courses: (1) group buying clubs, (2) wholesale- sponsored voluntary chains, and (3) retailer-owned co-operative warehouses. It is the last of these that this study suggests as the most appropriate course for Denton independent retailers.

Electricity in Rural Areas of North Texas: "This study shows three things: (1) a precedent for the expenditure of public funds to teach electricity in our public high schools has already been established by the school system in the larger school systems of Texas, (2) the rural families living on electrified farms in the North Texas area want instruction of this type given to the boys and girls in their communities, and (3) both the rural people and the professional people of the North Texas area believe that instruction dealing with the use of electricity and electrical equipment had spread until by 1935 more than twenty-one million homes, about eighty percent of the total in America at that time, were electrified, only eleven American farms out of every 100 had central-station electricity. To What Extent are the Personality Needs of the Music Students of the Denton Senior High School Being Met through Music?: The problem which is reported in these pages represents an attempt on the part of the writer to discover whether the music curriculum of the Denton Senior High School is meeting the personality needs of the students of the school. In order to discover a starting-point from which to attack this problem, the writer administered standardized personality and music tests to the students enrolled in her music classes. The results of these tests form the primary basis of the investigation and of this thesis.
An Analysis of the Activity Program Offered at El Centro, Denton's Youth Center: "The problem of this thesis is to determine through survey and comparative study the effect of the activity program of Denton's El Centro, the youth center, on the youth of the City of Denton...methods of operation and internal organization of youth centers, the purpose of the centers and the results of some of the activities are outlined. Members of the Denton youth center were interviewed; the information gained from the interviews was recorded on prepared questionnaires. Various types of activities at Denton's youth center are discussed. The study also attempts to reveal by means of tables those activities which are more important to the male youth of Denton. Contemporary Women Poets of Texas: As a teacher of American literature in high school, I have become conscious of the importance of teaching students of that age level the lore and poetry of their native state. Poems of nature or local color in their own country will hold their interest when material from more distant points seems dull and uninteresting. Through my teaching I have become interested in the poetry of the Southwest and have enjoyed reading the poetry and knowing the poets through personal interview or correspondence.

In so doing, attention will be given to the need for such an organization, to the shortcomings of present organizations, and to the fundamental principles which should underlie any effective organization.
The History of Hardeman County, Texas: This thesis discusses the creation and history of Hardeman County in the state of Texas. The period of the Texas Republic was one of uncertain and unstable government, and the Red River Municipality thus created in 1835 remained as such for only two years. It was realized by the government that such large political subdivisions would not be easily administered, and by 1837 these municipalities were further divided into counties. The vast territory encompassed by the original boundaries of the Red River Municipality yielded thirty-five counties between 1837 and 1891, including Hardeman. The population of the newly created county was made up entirely of transient pioneers and roving bands of cowboys and cattlemen. The official census did not list a record of any population until 1880, when fifty people were shown as residents.
The Importance of Red River in the History of the Southwest: For four hundred years the Red River Valley has been the battleground between contending Indian tribes and European races, and for almost three hundred of these years the river has been a disputed boundary line, either between rival nations, or between neighboring states of our country. The river has never been of much importance as a commercial route, yet very few rivers in all the United States have played so an important and persistent a part in this history of their sections as the Red River has played in the history of the Southwest.

An Experimental Investigation of the Value of Music Workbooks in Junior High Music Classes: This study is an experimental investigation of two groups of junior high school students in an effort to evaluate the advantages of workbooks in their music classes. The comparison was made with two classes composed of thirty-two students each from the two junior high schools in the Beaumont Independent School District. One class used the workbooks in conjunction with the regular singing and appreciation work, but the other class did not use formal workbooks. They discussed the theory and notation of the music in relation to the work they were doing.

The purpose of this study was to show whether these foods could be a potential source of food poisoning; whether there are any particular foods that should have greater care than others in order to protect their quality; and whether the bacteriological contamination could have been prevented by strict observance of the city regulations for handling foods.
