Scattering In The K=O Band Of Odd-Odd Deformed Nuclei

Description: A displacement of energy levels has been observed in the K=O band of odd-odd deformed nuclei. It is shown that this shift is due to a particular type of scattering in which the final state is obtained from the initial state by a rotation of 180'. This circumstance allows one to state certain selection rules on the parts of the n-p residual interaction responsible for the shift. The Wigner component of the force cannot contribute to the shift. In certain cases the contribution of all central for… more

Preparation of Uranium(IV) Nitrate Solutions

Description: A procedure was developed for the preparation of uranium(IV) nitrate solutions in dilute nitric acid. Zinc metal was used as a reducing agent for uranium(VI) in dilute sulfuric acid. The uranium(IV) was precipitated as the hydrated oxide and dissolved in nitric acid. Uranium(IV) nitrate solutions were prepared at a maximum concentration of 100 g/l. The uranium(VI) content was less than 2% of the uranium(IV). (auth)

Description: Studies are being made on the effects of variation of aluminum content, heat treatment, surface preparation, and other metallurgical factors on the room temperature ductility of Al-- Fe alloys. The variation of Fe/sub 3/Al order as a function of temperature for 13.9 Alfenol was redetermined under constant instrumental conditions. The variation of the electrical resistivity of the three alloys under consideration with temperature on slow cooling is illustrated. An anomaly in the disordering proc… more

A STUDY OF FISSION PRODUCT TRANSPORT MECHANISMS IN HIGH TEMPERATURE GAS- COOLED REACTOR FUEL ELEMENTS

Description: The experimental work on the diffusion of fission products in graphite matrices at high temperatures is reviewed and the possible mechanisms of mass transport are discussed. Preliminary data are given on diffusion in these systems. It is shown that the rates of diffusion for fission products introduced by a recoil process into the moderatcr lattice can be correlated based on a random wahk solid state diffusion model. An expression is derived for the coefficient of diffusion in terms of the latt… more

DEVELOPMENT OF A PROCESS FOR SODIUM BONDING OF EBR-II FUEL AND BLANKET ELEMENTS

Description: Procedures for assembling EBR-II fuel elements with annular sodium bonds between the uranium rods and the stainless steel claddings are outlined. The results of several meltdown and uranium-settling experiments are given. Bonding experiments were performed: furnace bonding, submerged canning, ultrasonic bonding, centrifuging, pressure pulsing, and vibratory bonding. Vibratory bonding was chosen for the production of the first EBR-II core. (D.L.C.)

Summary of the Operational Status of Reactor Control Instrumentation, Report No. 2

Description: The purpose of this review is to report the operability status of the reactor control instrumentation. The status of the instruments was determined twice during the first six months of this year, April 1 and June 1. The information contained in this report is not intended to be a complete description of the control instruments, but only as they apply to reactor control. The assigned Pile Physicist at each reactor reported the status of instrumentation at his reactor. Chart I summarizes the oper… more

RADIOISOTOPE AND RADIATION APPLICATIONS. Quarterly Progress Report

Description: The study of the formation mechanism of free radicals in polymeric materials was continued. Emphasis was placed on an examination of the effect of structural factors on the efficiency of free-radical site formation in acrylate polymers. Site measurements as a function of dose were made for polymethacrylamide and repeated for polymethacrylic acid. The volatile products from the irradiation of polyacrylic acid. polymethacrylic acid, poly-ter- butylmethacrylate. and polycyclohexyl methacrylate wer… more
