Recommendations for a US geothermal research plan. Volume 1

Description: A multidisciplinary study team developed a comprehensive research program. Five- and ten-year program plans emphasize critical five-year milestones. Recommended plans are presented here under constraint of three different five-year budgets: $100, $300 and $500 million, respectively. Plans are detailed in six resource subprograms: high temperature water, moderate temperature water, hot dry rock, brine, geopressured, and dry steam. Also presented are plans for five subprograms common to all geoth… more

Regional studies program. Forecasting the local economic impacts of energy resource development: a methodological approach

Description: Emphasis is placed on the nature and magnitude of socio-economic impacts of fossil-fuel development. A model is described that identifies and estimates the magnitude of the economic impacts of anticipated energy resource development in site-specific areas and geographically contiguous areas of unspecified size. The modeling methodology was designed to assist industries and government agencies complying with recent federal and state legislation requiring subregional impact analyses for individua… more

Critical evaluation of high-temperature gas-cooled reactors applicable to coal conversion

Description: A critical review is presented of the technology and costs of very high-temperature gas-cooled reactors (VHTRs) applicable to nuclear coal conversion. Coal conversion processes suitable for coupling to reactors are described. Vendor concepts of the VHTR are summarized. The materials requirements as a function of process temperature in the range 1400 to 2000/sup 0/F are analyzed. Components, environmental and safety factors, economics and nuclear fuel cycles are reviewed. It is concluded that pr… more

Program plan for comprehensive characterization of solidified high-level wastes

Description: An experimental plan is described for in-depth characterization of canistered solidified waste forms for the storage and disposal of high-level radioactive wastes. The plan is being considered for silicate glass forms at PNL. The basic aspects of the plan have general application and can be applied to other candidate waste forms as well. The plan is designed to define the behavior of waste canisters and their contents during anticipated handling, storage, and disposal regimes. Particular emphas… more

Strategic considerations in planning a counterevacuation

Description: The Soviet Union has highly developed plans to evacuate their population centers in a nuclear confrontation. Their plans include construction of expedient shelters in the outlying areas and continued operation of their essential industry by commuting workers. If they should successfully implement their plan, a subsequent nuclear exchange with the United States would cost them far fewer casualties than they suffered in World War II. Without a corresponding evacuation, the US could lose from 50 t… more

Shutdown and post-test examination plan for the small steam generator model (SSGM)

Description: A detailed working plan to terminate and to examine the Westinghouse duplex tube small steam generator model (SSGM) is defined and presented. Following completion of the current phase (DNB Corrosion Testing in Off-Normal Water Chemistry) of testing, the Advanced Reactors Division GPL-1/SWL-1 Loops will be shut down on both the water side and the sodium side. The SSGM will be cleaned prior to removal of the model from the test silo. During disassembly and following removal of the model to a diss… more

LLL comments on The Ultimate Catastrophe

Description: This correspondence provides a discussion of purported hazards of nuclear energy production and weapons research. The possibility of atmospheric burn and oceanic burn are discounted, and the cross sections of Nitrogen are investigated and the concentration of D[sub 2]O in the oceans are considered. In conclusion, extremely conservative calculations demonstrated that it is completely impossible for either the earth`s atmosphere or sea to sustain fusion reactions of either thermonuclear nuclear c… more

Establishing a Special Interest City Magazine: D, the Magazine of Dallas

Description: The problem of this study was to determine how, and to what degree, a representative contemporary special interest magazine projected editorial, advertising, circulation, and financial obligations prior to publication and during its infancy. In essence, how did a representative nonsubsidized city magazine identify a marketable audience, resolve advertising and circulation policies, and meet financial obligations? Specifically, this study explored--in six chapters--the mechanics of pre- and post… more
