Grande Ronde Basin Fish Habitat Enhancement Project, Annual Report 2002-2003.

Description: On July 1, 1984 the Bonneville Power Administration and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife entered into an agreement to initiate fish habitat enhancement work in the Joseph Creek subbasin of the Grande Ronde River Basin in northeast Oregon. In July of 1985 the Upper and Middle Grande Ronde River, and Catherine Creek subbasins were included in the intergovernmental contract, and on March 1, 1996 the Wallowa River subbasin was added. The primary goal of 'The Grande Ronde Basin Fish Habita… more

Salt valve and instrumentation test using the nagle long shafted pump :final report.

Description: The Salt Valve and Instrumentation Test was done to provide data on equipment performance in high temperature environments similar to that expected in the next large scale application of that technology. The experiment tested three different valves: (1) a valve with the standard valve body and standard high temperature self-packing material; (2) a valve with the standard valve body and stainless steel O-rings; and (3) a magnetic valve that uses a high temperature coil and no packing material. Sodium Bearing Waste Processing Alternatives Analysis

Description: A multidisciplinary team gathered to develop a BBWI recommendation to DOE-ID on the processing alternatives for the sodium bearing waste in the INTEC Tank Farm. Numerous alternatives were analyzed using a rigorous, systematic approach. The data gathered were evaluated through internal and external peer reviews for consistency and validity. Three alternatives were identified to be top performers: Risk-based Calcination, MACT to WIPP Calcination and Cesium Ion Exchange. A dual-path through early … more

IRON PHOSPHATE GLASSES: AN ALTERNATIVE FOR VITRIFYING CERTAIN NUCLEAR WASTES

Description: During the past year, iron phosphate glasses containing the following three types of nuclear waste, as recommended by the Tank Focus Area (TFA) group, have been investigated. (1) a high sodium/sulfate Hanford Low-Activity Waste (LAW) (2) a High Chrome Waste (HCW) at Hanford, and (3) a Sodium Bearing Waste (SBW) at Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL) Over three hundred trial melts, ranging in size from 50 g to more than 10 kg, have been evaluated. The experimental wor… more

IEMDC-In-Line Electric Motor Driven Compressor Quarterly Report

Description: During this reporting period, significant progress has been made towards the development of the IEMDC System design. Considerable effort was put forth by Curtiss-Wright EMD in the resolution of the technical issue of aerodynamically induced radial forces. This has provided a design basis with which to establish the radial magnetic bearing load capacity and the rotordynamic design. Dresser-Rand has made considerable progress on the flowpath design for the compressor section particularly on the v… more

A Real Time Coal Content/Ore Grade (C2OG) Sensor, Technical Report: January - March 2004

Description: This eleventh quarterly technical report discusses the installation of a spectral machine vision system in the Stillwater mine's core room. In brief, the system has been fabricated, installed, and preliminary measurements have been made. A first round of refinements has been made, included replacing a bad bearing and applying filters to the lighting. A high-speed Spectral Angle Mapper (SAM) program was written to classify the cores in real time. This program identifies sulfides in the core samp… more

Rubisco Mechanism: Dissection of the Enolization Partial Reaction. Final Report

Description: To test experimentally, the prior theoretical deduction that active-site residue Lys166 of ribulose-bisphosphate carboxylase participates in the carboxylation step of overall catalysis, site-directed mutants and chemically rescued site-directed mutants were characterized by kinetics and product analysis. Although position-166 mutants are able to catalyze normal enolization of ribulose bisphosphate, the enediol intermediate does not undergo carboxylation but rather eliminates phosphate. Furtherm… more

Membrane Treatment of Liquid Salt Bearing Radioactive Wastes

Description: The main fields of introduction and application of membrane methods for preliminary treatment and processing salt liquid radioactive waste (SLRW) can be nuclear power stations (NPP) and enterprises on atomic submarines (AS) utilization. Unlike the earlier developed technology for the liquid salt bearing radioactive waste decontamination and concentrating this report presents the new enhanced membrane technology for the liquid salt bearing radioactive waste processing based on the state-of-the-a… more

Induced Polarization with Electromagnetic Coupling: 3D Spectral Imaging Theory EMSP Project No. 73836

Description: This report summarizes the research work completed on the project between December 2001 and September 2002. (1) A model of all Spectral IP capacitive couplings revealed that potential bearing electrodes should be carefully chosen to obviate some of the capacitive coupling problems. This need becomes more important for borehole sampling. Thus, work had been done to design a porous pot electrode hat has all the desired characteristics (low input impedance = 100{Omega}, low noise = 1 {micro}V/{rad… more

Testing a Low-Influence Spindle Drive Motor

Description: Precision spindles used for diamond turning and other applications requiring low error motion generally require a drive system that ideally applies a pure torque to the rotating spindle. Frequently a frameless motor, that is, one without its own bearings, is directly coupled to the spindle to make a compact and simple system having high resonant frequencies. Although in addition to delivering drive torque, asymmetries in the motor cause it to generate disturbance loads (forces and moments) whic… more

Characterization of Tank WM-189 Sodium-bearing Waste at INTEC, Rev. 1

Description: Idaho Nuclear Technology and Engineering Center 300,000-gallon vessel WM-189 was filled in late 2001 with concentrated sodium bearing waste (SBW). Three airlifted liquid samples and a steam jetted slurry sample were obtained for quantitative analysis and characterization of WM-189 liquid phase SBW and tank heel sludge. Estimates were provided for most of the reported data values, based on the greater of (a) analytical uncertainty, and (b) variation of analytical results between nominally simila… more

TRU Waste Assay Methodology with the Combined Thermal Epithermal Neutron (CTEN) System

Description: The CTEN assay system is designed to measure plutonium bearing 208-L waste drums and make the transuranic versus low-level waste determination. The system was certified for Waste Isolation Pilot Plant operations and the Environmental Protection Agency approved the CTEN in 2002. It is the only system capable of making the transuranic/low-level waste (TRU/LLW) determination since it can routinely assay below 100 nCi/g. The system conducts a measurement by using either (or both) an active 14 MeV n… more

PHYSICAL, CHEMICAL AND STRUCTURAL EVOLUTIION OF ZEOLITE-CONTAINING WASTE FORMS PRODUCED FROM METAKAOLINITE AND CALCINED SODUIM BEARING WASTE (HLW AND/OR LLW)

Description: Zeolites can adsorb liquids and gases, take part in catalytic reactions and serve as cation exchange media. They are commercially available as finely divided powders. Using zeolites to manage radioactive waste is not new, but a process by which zeolites can be made to act both as a host phase and a cementing agent is. It is notable that zeolites occur in nature as well consolidated/cemented deposits. The Romans used blocks of Neapolitan zeolitized tuff as a building material and some of these b… more
