Dosimetric implications of new compounds for neutron capture therapy (NCT)

Description: Systemic application of radiolabeled or cytotoxic agents should allow targeting of primary and metastatic neoplasms on a cellular level. In fact, drug uptake in non-target cell pools often exceeds toxic levels before sufficient amounts are delivered to tumor. In addition, at the large concentration of molecules necessary for therapy, effects of saturation are often found. Application of NCT can circumvent problems associated with high uptake in competing non-target cell pools, as the /sup 10/B(… more

New compounds for neutron capture therapy (NCT) and their significance

Description: Clearly the most effective tumor therapy would be obtained by the selective targeting of cytotoxic agents to tumor cells. Although many biomolecules are known to be taken up in tumors, the targeting of cytotoxic agents to tumors is limited by the fact that other essential cell pools compete with equal or even greater effectiveness. The approach of delivering stable non-toxic isotopes to tumor, with activation by means of an external radiation beam, is advantageous for two reasons: (1) it obviat… more

The theoretical basis and clinical methodology for stereotactic interstitial brain tumor irradiation using iododeoxyuridine as a radiation sensitizer and samarium-145 as a brachytherapy source

Description: High grade astrocytomas have proven resistant to all conventional therapy. A technique to produce radiation enhancement during interstitial brain tumor irradiation by using a radiation sensitizer (IdUrd) and by stimulation of Auger electron cascades through absorption of low energy photons in iodine (Photon activation) is described. Clinical studies using IdUrd, {sup 192}Ir as a brachytherapy source, and external radiation have produced promising results. Substituting samarium-145 for {sup 192}… more

Evaluation of energy spectral information in nuclear imaging and investigation of protein binding of cationic radionuclides by lactoferrin. Comprehensive progress report, October 1, 1977-September 30, 1980

Description: Construction of an Anger camera-computer system which allows collection of both the position and energy signals from events detected by the scintillation camera has been completed. The system allows correction of energy response non-uniformity of the detector and facilitates research related to effects of energy discrimination in radionuclide scintigraphy. The system consists of electronic hardware to transmit and digitize the energy signal, software to record and process that signal in conjunc… more

Radiological and Environmental Research Division annual report, July 1979-June 1980. [Lead abstract]

Description: Separate abstracts were prepared for 19 of the 33 papers presented by the Center for Human Radiobiology for the Radiological and Environmental Research Division Annual Report. The 14 items not included are abstracts only and deal with the mechanisms and dosimetry for induction of malignancies by radium. (KRM)

Nuclear Medicine Technology. Progress Report for Quarter Ending September 30, 1978

Description: A unique class of radiopharmaceuticals labeled with the /sup 117m/Sn nuclide has been developed. The attractive properties of /sup 117m/Sn include a 14-day physical half-life and the emission of a single ..gamma..-photon with an optimal energy of 159 keV. A specialized apparatus was designed for the conversion of metallic /sup 117m/Sn to /sup 117m/SnCl/sub 4/ which was subsequently converted to a variety of useful /sup 117m/Sn-labeled organotin intermediates. The availability of this unique app… more

Nuclear medicine technology progress report for quarter ending June 30, 1979

Description: Diffusion chamber assay system studies on the relative cytotoxicity and target cell uptake of /sup 195m/Pt-labeled cis- and trans-dichlorodiammineplatinum(II) (cis- and trans-DDP) are reported. These two agents are excellent candidates for such studies since cis-DDP is an established potent antitumor agent while the trans-isomer exhibits little antitumor activity. The KB tumor cell population in chambers from the cis-DDP-treated animals decreased while the cell population in chambers from the t… more
