Experience with dynamic material control subsystems

Description: Operation of a Dynamic Material Control (DYMAC) prototype system has yielded some useful information for installing the final system. We discovered a bias between two methods for measuring filtrates. Evaluation of a unit process dynamic balance brought to light an operating procedure that weakens the accountability goals of the DYMAC system. We were able to correct both situations for the final system and learned that we must regularly monitor the system once it is operational for similar discr… more

High-voltage crowbar protection for the large CDF axial drift chamber

Description: The Central Outer Tracker (COT) is a big cylindrical drift chamber that provides charged particle tracking for the Collider Detector at Fermilab experiment. To protect the COT, the large stored energy in the high voltage system needs to be removed quickly when a problem is sensed. For the high voltage switch, a special-order silicon-controlled-rectifier was chosen over more readily available integrated gate bipolar transistors because of layout and reliability questions. The considerations conc… more

The utility of diamond sensors for space flight

Description: Los Alamos National Laboratory has developed diamond sensors with interdigitated electrodes that operate in a photoconducting mode. The specific application for this work was for the Department of Energy`s instruments flown on the Global Positioning System satellites. Sensors have been fabricated and tested for their response to low-energy x-rays. These sensors can be operated to extremely high volumetric radiation doses. We find that the sensors are extremely useful for situations where the su… more

Architecture for nuclear energy in the 21st century

Description: Global and regional scenarios for future energy demand have been assessed from the perspectives of nuclear materials management. From these the authors propose creation of a nuclear fuel cycle architecture which maximizes inherent protection of plutonium and other nuclear materials. The concept also provides technical and institutional flexibility for transition into other fuel cycle systems, particularly those involving breeder reactors. The system, its implementation timeline, and overall imp… more

Search for supersymmetric particles at CDF

Description: Analyses of events with large unbalanced transverse energy from the 1987 and 1988-89 CDF data runs have set limits on the masses of supersymmetric squarks and gluinos. In a simple model with a stable photino as the lightest supersymmetric particle, the 1987 data with an integrated luminosity of 25.3 nb{sup {minus}1} have excluded at the 90% CL, squarks of mass less than 73 GeV/c{sup 2} and gluinos of mass less than 74 GeV/c{sup 2}. Preliminary results from an analysis of 1 pb{sup {minus}1} of d… more

Alpha, silicon, and iron ion induced current transients in low capacitance silicon and GaAs diodes

Description: High-speed (<40 ps) current transient and charge collection measurements were make using a wide-band 70-GHz, 6-ps risetime sampling oscilloscope, on GaAs and silicon diodes irradiated by 18 MeV Si, 12 MeV B, 12 and 100 MeV Fe ions, and 3 and 5 MeV alpha particles. Results show that the response of a device to a particle strike can be very fast but strongly depends on the LET (Linear Energy Transfer) of the particle. The rise time dependence with different parameters such as the doping density, … more

Source and Propagation Characteristics of Explosive and Other Seismic Sources

Description: Understanding of the source and propagation characteristics of seismic events of different types including earthquakes, explosions and mining-induced events is essential for successful discrimination of nuclear explosions. We are compiling a data set of mining related seismic events in east Eurasia. Natural earthquake data in the same region are also collected for comparison study between mining related events and earthquakes. The ground-truth data set will provide a unique and valuable resourc… more

Large dynamic range, picosecond resolution radiation detection based on low-temperature-grown epitaxial GaAs films

Description: This is the final report of a three-year, Laboratory-Directed Research and Development (LDRD) project at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The original objective of the project was to develop ultrafast radiation detectors based on GaAs epilayers grown by molecular beam epitaxy at 200--300 C. Low temperature (LT) GaAs is known to have subpicosecond carrier lifetimes; therefore, detectors based on this material should have response times of the order of 1 ps, more than an order of magnit… more

A high performance multi-channel preamplifier ASIC

Description: A new preamplifier ASIC has been designed and built to improve performance of the VTPC (Vertex Time Projection Chamber) at Fermilab`s Colliding Detector Facility. Design of the semicustom IC was completed using a Tektronix Quick-Chip 2S bipolar linear array. The ASIC has 6 channels on a chip and provides lower noise, higher gain, lower power, and lower mass packaging than the device which it replaces. Actual performance of the preamplifier was found to match very closely the simulated performan… more

Design of 325 MHz single and triple spoke resonators at FNAL

Description: The proposed 8-GeV driver at FNAL is based on approximately 400 independently phased SC resonators. In this paper the design of 325 MHz Spoke Resonators, two single spoke resonators ({beta}=0.22 and {beta}=0.4) and a triple spoke resonator ({beta}=0.62), for the High Intensity Neutrino Source (HINS) front end is presented. We describe the optimization of the spoke resonators geometry, the goal being to minimize the E{sub peak}/E{sub acc} and B{sub peak}/E{sub acc} ratios. We report on the coupl… more
