Method for calculating wing characteristics by lifting-line theory using nonlinear section lift data

Description: "A method is presented for calculating wing characteristics by lifting-line theory using nonlinear section lift data. Material from various sources is combined with some original work into the single complete method described. Multhopp's systems of multipliers are employed to obtain the induced angle of attack directly from the spanwise lift distribution. Equations are developed for obtaining these multipliers for any even number of spanwise stations, and values are tabulated for 10 stations al… more

Description: "An altitude-wind-tunnel investigation has been made to determine the performance of Hamilton Standard 6507A-2 four-blade and three-blade propellers on a YP-47M airplane at high blade loadings and high engine powers. Characteristics of the four-blase propeller were obtained for a range of power coefficients from 0.10 to 1.00 at free-stream Mach numbers of 0.20, 0.30, 0.40. Characteristics of the three-blade propeller were obtained for a range of power coefficients from 0.30 to 1.00 at a free-st… more

An Investigation of the Icing and Heated-Air De-Icing Characteristics of the R-2600-13 Induction System

Description: "A laboratory investigation was made on a Holley 1685-HB carburetor mounted on an R-2600-13 supercharger assembly to determine the icing characteristics and the heated-air de-icing requirements of this portion of the B-25D airplane induction system. Icing has been found to be most prevalent at relatively small throttle openings and, consequently, all runs were made at simulated 60-percent normal rated power condition. Icing characteristics were determined during a series of 15-minute runs over … more

Resume of Wind-Tunnel Data on the Effect of External Stores on Stability of Models of Military Airplanes

Description: Report presenting a study of static wind-tunnel data on the effects of external stores like tanks, torpedoes, bombs, and radar domes on the stability of military airplanes. The results are focused on longitudinal and lateral stability. Static longitudinal stability is affected at various Mach numbers, but the data was not sufficient to estimate the effect on the lateral stability.

The Chelate Process I

Description: The chelate process for the extraction and decontamination of plutonium has been investigated. The process is designed as an alternate process for ihe Hanford type operation. The basic chemical factors have been studied and two flowsheeis have been developed and tested for recovery of plutonium. An over-all yield of plutonium in excess of 99% is reported for one flowsheet using benzene as the organic solvent and 98.5% when toluene was substituted for benzene. The general factors involved in est… more

Graphite expansion committee meeting of December 6, 1946

Description: The twelfth meeting of the Graphite Expansion Committee was held on December 6, 1946. A summary of the meeting is as follows. Recent laboratory studies suggest that the rate of graphite expansion decreases with exposure when the samples are exposed in an air atmosphere at ambient pile temperature, through the relative effects of atmosphere and temperature are not known. These observations are in qualitative agreement with the decreased rate of vertical expansion of the piles. The neoprene seal … more

Wind-Tunnel Investigation of the Stability of the Jettisonable Nose Section of the X-3 Airplane

Description: "Because previous work has indicated that jettisonable nose sections of airplanes may be inherently unstable, and thus may cause dangerous centripetal accelerations on a pilot after jettisoning during high-speed flight, an investigation has been conducted in the Langley 20-foot free-spinning tunnel to determine the behavior in descent of a model of the jettisonable nose section of the Douglas X-3 airplane. The effects of varying the center-of-gravity position, of attaching fins of various sizes… more
