Method for fabricating a seal between a ceramic and a metal alloy

Description: A method of fabricating a seal between a ceramic and an alloy comprising the steps of prefiring the alloy in an atmosphere with a very low partial pressure of oxygen, firing the assembled alloy and ceramic in air, and gradually cooling the fired assembly to avoid the formation of thermal stress in the ceramic. The method forms a bond between the alloy and the ceramic capable of withstanding the environment of a pressurized water reactor and suitable for use in an electrical conductivity sensitiā€¦ more

An overview of acoustic telemetry

Description: Acoustic telemetry has been a dream of the drilling industry for the past 50 years. It offers the promise of data rates which are one-hundred times greater than existing technology. Such a system would open the door to true logging-while-drilling technology and bring enormous profits to its developers. The basic idea is to produce an encoded sound wave at the bottom of the well, let it propagate up the steel drillpipe, and extract the data from the signal at the surface. Unfortunately, substantā€¦ more

Techniques and processes for the measurement of the resonances of small single crystals

Description: The mechanical resonances of small oriented single crystals of materials of interest to basic science and engineering can be used to determine all the elastic moduli and the ultrasonic attenuation of these materials. To measure the resonances of the samples without introducing the resonances of the measuring system requires that the transducers be non-resonant at the frequencies of interest, and that they be well isolated from their mounts. However, for samples near 1 mm in the largest dimensioā€¦ more

Borehole-inclusion stressmeter measurements in bedded salt

Description: Sandia purchased borehole-inclusion stressmeters from a commercial supplier to measure in situ stress changes in bedded salt. However, the supplied stressmeters were difficult to set in place and gave erratic results in bedded salt. These problems were overcome with a new extended platen design. Also a straingaged transducer was designed which can be read with a conventional data logger. Due to the nonlinear behavior of bedded salt under uniaxial loading, a new empirical calibration scheme was ā€¦ more

Barium silicate glass/Inconel X-750 interaction. [PWR]

Description: Water reactor safety programs at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory have required the development of specialized instrumentation. An example is the electrical conductivity-sensitive liquid level transducer developed for use in pressurized-water reactors (PWRs) in which the operation of the sensing probe relies upon the passage of current through the water between the center pin of the electrode and its shell such that when water is present the resulting voltage is low, and conversely, whā€¦ more

Transducer characterization

Description: This report has been prepared specifically for ultrasonic transducer users within the Nondestructive Testing Evaluation (NDE) community of the weapons complex. The purpose of the report is to establish an initial set of uniform procedures for measuring and recording transducer performance data, and to establish a common foundation on which more comprehensive transducer performance evaluations may be added as future transducer performance criteria expands. Transducer parameters and the problems ā€¦ more

Geothermal down-well instrumentation. Final report

Description: Work to develop a telemetry link between a Sperry downwell geothermal turbo-pump and the well-head, without the requirement for cables within the pipe-string, is described. Two methods were studied, built, and tested in a well at Heber, California, during the first field tests on the pump. These were: (a) an acoustic scheme which transmitted a modulated 4 kHz acoustic carrier on the pipe-string and (b) an electromagnetic scheme which used the exhaust steam pipe annulus as a coaxial transmissionā€¦ more

LOFT differential pressure uncertainty analysis

Description: A performance analysis of the LOFT differential pressure (..delta..P) measurement is presented. Along with completed descriptions of test programs and theoretical studies that have been conducted on the ..delta..P, specific sources of measurement uncertainty are identified, quantified, and combined to provide an assessment of the ability of this measurement to satisfy the SDD 1.4.1C (June 1975) requirement of measurement of differential pressure.

Particle measurement and brine chemistry at the Salton Sea Deep Well

Description: The Advanced Brine Chemistry Project, a part of the US Department of Energy's Geothermal Energy Program, is addressing operating problems associated with scaling and corrosion at geothermal power plants. Under this project, Pacific Northwest Laboratory conducted a series of tests at the Salton Sea Deep Well, which has one of the highest solids contents in the world. The purpose of the tests was to evaluate monitoring instrumentation under field conditions and relate particulate formation to theā€¦ more

High-temperature borehole instrumentation

Description: Research in materials, equipment, and instrument development was required in the Hot Dry Rock Energy Extraction Demonstration at Fenton Hill located in northern New Mexico. The new Phase II Energy Extraction System at the Fenton Hill Test Site will consist of two wellbores drilled to a depth of about 4570 m (15,000 ft) and then connected by a series of hydraulic-induced fractures. The first borehole (EE-2) was completed in May of 1980, at a depth of 4633 m (15,200 ft) of which approximately 396ā€¦ more

Feasibility investigation and design study of optical well logging methods for high temperature geothermal wells

Description: The objective of this project was exploration of a novel approach to high temperature well logging, based on a system of optical transducers and an optical transmission line both theoretically capable of operation to at least 600/sup 0/C. The scope of the work involved the accomplishment of ten specific tasks. These had as their objective the determination of feasibility, and identification of major problem areas, in the implementation of continuous temperature logging of geothermal wells usingā€¦ more

Static and simulated seismic testing of the TRG-7 through -16 shear wall structures

Description: Results from the static, simulated seismic base excitation, and experimental modal analysis tests performed on the TRG-7 through -16 structures are reported. These results were used to establish the scalability of static and dynamic response measured on small structural models to the dynamic response of conventional concrete structures. In addition, these tests provided information concerning cumulative damage effects that occur in concrete structures when they are subjected to different dynamiā€¦ more

Pressure instrumentation for geothermal borehole logging

Description: Accurate geothermal logging requires pressure measurements with resolutions down to 0.01 psi in environments of up to 275/sup 0/C and 15,000 psi. The characteristics of several basic types of pressure transducers are examined and compared to these requirements. Specific deficiencies are identified such as thermal stability and resolution limitations; R and D activities and results correcting these deficiencies are discussed.
