A Comparison of the First Two Sequenced Chloroplast Genomes in Asteraceae: Lettuce and Sunflower

Description: Asteraceae is the second largest family of plants, with over 20,000 species. For the past few decades, numerous phylogenetic studies have contributed to our understanding of the evolutionary relationships within this family, including comparisons of the fast evolving chloroplast gene, ndhF, rbcL, as well as non-coding DNA from the trnL intron plus the trnLtrnF intergenic spacer, matK, and, with lesser resolution, psbA-trnH. This culminated in a study by Panero and Funk in 2002 that used over 13… more

Field Test Program for Evaluation of Sorbent Injection for Mercury Control, Quarterly Technical Report: October - December 2003

Description: The power industry in the U.S. is faced with meeting new regulations to reduce the emissions of mercury compounds from coal-fired plants. These regulations are directed at the existing fleet of nearly 1,100 boilers. These plants are relatively old with an average age of over 40 years. Although most of these units are capable of operating for many additional years, there is a desire to minimize large capital expenditures because of the reduced (and unknown) remaining life of the plant to amortiz… more

COFIRING OF BIOMASS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH DAKOTA

Description: A project funded by the U.S. Department of Energy's National Energy Technology Laboratory was completed by the Energy & Environmental Research Center to explore the potential for cofiring biomass at the University of North Dakota (UND). The results demonstrate how 25% sunflower hulls can be cofired with subbituminous coal and provide a 20% return on investment or 5-year payback for the modifications required to enable firing biomass. Significant outcomes of the study are as follows. A complete … more

COFIRING OF BIOMASS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH DAKOTA

Description: Combustion testing of sunflower-coal blends on Boilers No. 3 and 5 at the University of North Dakota (UND) Steam Plant facility was completed. A total of four combustion tests were performed. In each boiler, a baseline combustion test was performed on subbituminous coal and a combustion test was performed on a sunflower-coal blend of approximately 25 wt% sunflower hulls. A cold-flow test was also performed on the boiler feed system. A summary review of the test results is included in this repor… more

Effects of an Acute Dose of Gamma Radiation Exposure on Stem Diameter Growth, Carbon Gain, and Biomass Partitioning in Helianthus annuus

Description: Nineteen-day-old dwarf sunflower plants (Helianthus annuus, variety NK894) received a variable dose (0-40 Gy) from a cobalt-60 gamma source. A very sensitive stem monitoring device, developed at Battelle's Pacific Northwest Laboratories, Richland, Washington was used to measure real-time changes in stem diameter. Exposure of plants caused a significant reduction in stem growth and root biomass. Doses as low as 5 Gy resulted in a significant increase in leaf density, suggesting that nonreversibl… more

Search for a bridge to the energy future: Proceedings

Description: The alarming effects, concerns, and even the insights into long-range energy planning that grew out of the OPEC oil embargo of 1973 are fading from the view of a shortsighted public. The enthusiastic initiatives taken in many countries for the development of alternative energy sources have withered due to lack of economic and/or ideological incentive. The events since December 1985, when the members of OPEC decided to increase production in an effort to capture their share of market, have broug… more

Root adaptations at stress levels of nitrate, phosphate, or both simultaneously

Description: Sunflowers in flowing hydroponic culture show reduced growth rates at nitrate levels below 10 ..mu..M nitrate or phosphate levels below 0.3 ..mu..F. At least for phosphate, this level is a very small fraction (0.003) of the K/sub m/ for the uptake systems. We have quantified four major adaptations that enable high growth rates under incipient stress: increased root:shoot ratio; increased uptake capacity (V/sub max/) per unit root mass; nocturnal uptake of nutrients; and (only partially adaptive… more

Detroit Lakes Energy Systems Study: Phase I extension. Final report, August 1, 1978-January 15, 1979. [Biomass for power plant]

Description: An assessment of the resource availability of biomass and the potential of utilization of renewable energy systems in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota is presented. The feasibility of retrofitting the existing power plant to house a biomass energy system is discussed. Survey and evaluation of current off-the-shelf farm implement equipment which can be adapted to the handling of selected biomass materials is presented. Density studies on sunflower stalks, grain straw, and forest residues are included. (… more
