Extraction of uranium from seawater: evaluation of uranium resources and plant siting

Description: This report deals with the evaluation of U.S. coastal waters as a uranium resource and with the selection of a suitable site for construction of a large-scale plant for uranium extraction. Evaluation of the resource revealed that although the concentration of uranium is quite low, about 3.3 ppB in seawater of average oceanic salinity, the amount present in the total volume of the oceans is very great, some 4.5 billion metric tons. Ground motion from earthquakes and underground nuclear weapons tests: a comparison as it relates to siting a nuclear waste storage facility at NTS

Description: Ground motion generated by a magnitude 4.3 earthquake at Massachusetts Mountain on the Nevada Test Site was measured at the control point and compared with ground motion generated at about the same distance by four underground nuclear weapons tests. The depth of the earthquake was between 4 and 4.6 km. The resulting signal at the distance considered was almost entirely body-wave components and had little or no contribution from the surface wave. Feasibility study of geothermal energy for heating greenhouses. Final report

Description: The technical feasibility of heating greenhouses with geothermal heat is established. Off-the-shelf equipment suitable for geothermal heating is readily available. A procedure is given to economically examine a geothermal site for its suitability. Generally, geothermal heating systems are capital intensive. Where the geothermal energy is free the geothermal system is very attractive and where the cost of geothermal heat is the same as other energy, Btu/$, geothermal heat is unattractive.

Description: A preliminary study of the Frio sand distribution and formation temperatures and pressures was undertaken in order to define prospective areas in which a more detailed reservoir analysis is necessary prior to the selection of a site for a geothermal well. As a result two potential geothermal fairways were identified--one in the south part of the area in Hidalgo, Willacy, and Cameron Counties, and the other in the north part in north-central Nueces County.
