/sup 238/Pu fuel-form processes. Quarterly report, October-December 1981

Description: Progress in the Savannah River /sup 238/Pu Fuel Form Program is summarized. Work during this period concentrated on the extensive cracking of the /sup 238/PuO/sub 2/ fuel form prior to encapsulation in the iridium containment shell for heat sources. This cracking results in increased recycle cost and decreased production efficiency. To better understand this cracking, Savannah River Laboratory (SRL) has made an extensive review of the development of /sup 238/PuO/sub 2/ fuel forms from small-sca… more

Gamma densitometer for measuring Pu density in fuel tubes

Description: A fuel-gamma-densitometer (FGD) has been developed to examine nondestructively the uniformity of plutonium in aluminum-clad fuel tubes at the Savannah River Plant (SRP). The monitoring technique is ..gamma..-ray spectroscopy with a lead-collimated Ge(Li) detector. Plutonium density is correlated with the measured intensity of the 208 keV ..gamma..-ray from /sup 237/U (7d) of the /sup 241/Pu (15y) decay chain. The FGD measures the plutonium density within 0.125- or 0.25-inch-diameter areas of th… more

Tested method to minimize plutonium assay discrepancies between laboratories

Description: Plutonium assay differences are frequently observed between laboratories exchanging plutonium dioxide powders. These differences are commonly the result of chemical changes and/or nonhomogeneities in sampled materials. The irregularities are often caused by moisture absorption during sampling, packaging, shipment, and storage of the materials. A method is proposed which eliminates the effects of chemical change in samples, particularly moisture absorption, and minimizes sampling error. A nondes… more

Effect of pressure on the transient swelling rate of oxide fuel. [LMFBR]

Description: An analysis of the transient swelling rate of oxide fuel, based on fission-gas bubble conditions calculated with the FRAS3 code, has been developed and implemented in the code. The need for this capability arises in the coupling of the FRAS3 fission-gas analysis code to the FPIN fuel-pin mechanics code. An efficient means of closely coupling the calculations of swelling strains and stresses between the modules is required. The present analysis provides parameters that allow the FPIN calculation… more

Uranium immobilization and nuclear waste

Description: Considerable information useful in nuclear waste storage can be gained by studying the conditions of uranium ore deposit formation. Further information can be gained by comparing the chemistry of uranium to nuclear fission products and other radionuclides of concern to nuclear waste disposal. Redox state appears to be the most important variable in controlling uranium solubility, especially at near neutral pH, which is characteristic of most ground water. This is probably also true of neptunium… more

Reduced-size plutonium sample processing and packaging for the PAT-2 package

Description: A light-water container for the air transport of plutonium safeguards samples, the PAT-2 package, has been developed in the USA and is now licensed by the US NRC (Certificate of Compliance) and the US DOT (IAEA Certificate of Competent Authority). The very limited available space in this package for plutonium-bearing samples required the design of small-size canisters to meet the needs of international safeguards. The suitability of a new small canister and vial for powder and solution samples … more

Study of the hydrolysis of uranium hexafluoride by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy

Description: The reaction of uranium hexafluoride with water has been studied by using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Several different methods for accomplishing this task have been carried out. In addition, interpretatins of the results have been made. These interpretations have been based on literature values for the reactants and for compounds analogous to possible products. It was shown that classical matrix-isolation techniques proved to be unsatisfactory for studying this reaction. O… more

Gamma-ray measurements for simultaneous calorimetric assay

Description: Gamma-ray measurements obtained in the course of developing a simultaneous calorimetric assay system are described. Gamma-ray measurements of the isotopic composition of six, well-characterized plutonium oxide samples were obtained while the samples were in the calorimeter. These samples represent a range of plutonium masses from 19 to 231 g and two isotopic compositions. The values of effective specific power determined from the gamma-ray measurements agree with the values determined from dest… more

Fuel and cladding tests for fuel failure safety analysis. [LMFBR]

Description: Three systems for testing fuel pin cladding were developed to support the determination of the mode and location of cladding failure during transient overpower events or transient undercooled overpower (TUCOP) conditions. The TUCOP FCTT system consists of exposing cladding specimens to thermal and loading conditions typical of TUCOP events. The Mandrel Loading Test (MLT) system was designed to produce cladding deformation and failure by internal mechanical interaction loading of a heated claddi… more

Detection and sizing of underbead cracks using ultrasonic nondestructive examination

Description: Ultrasonic nondestructive examination (NDE) will detect three mil deep underbead cracks in welds joining thin walled iridium hemishells. A correlation was developed to relate the amplitude of the signal reflected from the crack with crack wall area. The observed cracks occur in the weld underbead in the arc taper area during encapsulation of /sup 238/PuO/sub 2/ pellets for thermoelectric generators used in deep space exploration.

Pyrochemical processing of plutonium. Technology review report

Description: Non-aqueous processes are now in routine use for direct conversion of plutonium oxide to metal, molten salt extraction of americium, and purification of impure metals by electrorefining. These processes are carried out at elevated temperatures in either refractory metal crucibles or magnesium-oxide ceramics in batch-mode operation. Direct oxide reduction is performed in units up to 700 gram PuO/sub 2/ batch size with molten calcium metal as the reductant and calcium chloride as the reaction flu… more

Effect of storage temperature on self-irradiation damage of /sup 238/Pu-substituted zirconolite

Description: /sup 238/Pu-substituted cubic zirconolite (CaPuTi/sub 2/O/sub 7/) was stored at ambient temperature, 575/sup 0/ K, and 875/sup 0/ K until alpha decay doses of 2.4 to 3.6 x 10/sup 25//m/sup 3/ had been accumulated. The ambient temperature material swelled to a saturation value of 5.5 vol %, and the originally crystalline structure was transformed to one with an amorphous matrix and small domains that had retained their crystallinity. At 575/sup 0/ K, lesser amounts of swelling (4.1 vol %) and tr… more

Description: Vapor pressures and vapor compositions in equilibrium with a hypostoichiometric plutonium dioxide condensed phase have been calculated for the temperature range 1500 less than or equal to T less than or equal to 4000 K. Thermodynamic functions for the condensed phase and for each of the gaseous species were combined with an oxygen-potential model to obtain the partial pressures of O/sub 2/, O, Pu, PuO, and PuO/sub 2/. New thermodynamic functions for the solid oxide were calculated from availabl… more

The energy stored in a sample which had reached saturation in swelling after storage at ambient temperature was measured with a differential scanning calorimeter. The total energy of 6.6 +- 0.1 cal/g is released over the range 485 to 715/sup 0/C. The activation energy of annealing of the damage is 1.22 +- 0.05 eV. The temperatu… more

/sup 238/Pu fuel form processes. Quarterly report, July-September 1982

Description: Fracture tendency of pellets after final heat treatment or vacuum outgassing during production has been reviewed. A statistical analysis of fracture tendency has revealed a cyclical trend. The period of the cycle on average is about every 50 pellets. Phosphorus is considered detrimental to the impact behavior of iridium. Tests show that phosphorus is easily picked up by PuO/sub 2/ through a variety of pathways and is difficult to remove by heating techniques such as are possible in the PuFF Fac… more
