Recording Equipment for Internal Friction Measurements

Description: An apparatus was developed for recording internal friction data in such a manner as to circumvent many of the laborious and time-consuming observations and calculations usually associated with these measurements. An optical lever is used and the passage of the beam across the scale is detected by photoconductive cells. The cells are strategically located so that, when their signals are fed through a multichannel switching circuit to the pens of an operation recorder, a plot of the logarithm of … more

Measurements of the dependence of damage thresholds on laser wavelength, pulse duration and film thickness

Description: Results of three experiments will be described. We used 351-nm and 355-nm pulses with durations of 0.6, 1, 5 and 9 ns measure thresholds for a variety of anti-reflectance and high reflectance coatings. The functional form t/sup m/, with t the pulse duration, was used to scale fluence thresholds measured at 0.6 ns to those measured at 9.0 ns. Values of the coefficient m ranged from 0.10 to 0.51. The average value was 0.30. In the second experiment, we measured thresholds at 1064 nm, 527 nm and 3… more

Potential for efficient frequency conversion at high average power using solid state nonlinear optical materials

Description: High-average-power frequency conversion using solid state nonlinear materials is discussed. Recent laboratory experience and new developments in design concepts show that current technology, a few tens of watts, may be extended by several orders of magnitude. For example, using KD*P, efficient doubling (>70%) of Nd:YAG at average powers approaching 100 KW is possible; and for doubling to the blue or ultraviolet regions, the average power may approach 1 MW. Configurations using segmented apertur… more

Optical design and performance of the X25 hybrid wiggler beam line at the NSLS

Description: The X25 beam line at the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) began full-power commissioning in 1990. It extracts radiation from a 27 pole hybrid wiggler, which produces up to 1.8 kW of total power with a peak horizontal density of 450 W/mrad and critical energy of 4.6 keV. The design and performance of the beam line optics are described, in particular the cooling of the first monochromator crystal. 28 refs., 5 figs.

Ultraviolet imaging of hydrogen flames

Description: We have assembled an ultraviolet-sensitive intensified camera for observing hydrogen combustion by imaging the OH, A/sup 2/..sigma.. - X/sup 2//Pi/ bandhead emissions near 309 nm. The camera consists of a quartz and CaF achromat lense-coupled to an ultraviolet image intensifier which is in turn fiber-coupled to a focus projection scan (FPS) vidicon. The emission band is selected with interference filters which serve to discriminate against background. The camera provides optical gain of 100 to … more

Techniques for preventing damage to high power laser components

Description: Techniques for preventing damage to components of the LASL Shiva high power laser system were briefly presented. Optical element damage in the disk amplifier from the combined fluence of the primary laser beam and the Xenon flash lamps that pump the cavity was discussed. Assembly and cleaning techniques were described which have improved optical element life by minimizing particulate and optically absorbing film contamination on assembled amplifier structures. A Class-100 vertical flaw clean ro… more

Diamond-turning tool setting by interferogram analysis

Description: A method was developed to establish a numerically controlled tool path with respect to the work spindle centerline. Particularly adapted to the diamond turning of optics, this method is based upon interferogram analysis and is applicable to the establishment of the work spindle centerline relative to the tool path for any center-turned optic having a well-defined vertex radius of curvature. The application reported is for an f/2 concave spherical mirror.

Phased-array antenna control by a monolithic photonic integrated circuit, COMPASS

Description: Phased-array antenna systems are well known for rapid beam steering and their ability to bring high power to the target. Such systems are also quite complex and heavy, which have limited their usefulness. The issues of weight, size, power use, and complexity have been addressed through a system named COMPASS (Coherent Optical Monolithic Phased Array Steering System). All phased-array antenna systems need: (1) small size; (2) low power use; (3) high-speed beam steering; and (4) digitally-control… more

Nonequilibrium Ionization in Magnetohydrodynamic Generators

Description: The steady state ionization of a gas in which the electrons are hot and the atoms cool is investigated. The rate equations governing ionization, excitation, recombination, and de-excitation are solved for a model system using rate coefficients appropriate to the Cs atom. Included are all processes involving free electrons as well as spontaneous emission and resonance trapping of radiation. No incoming radiation is assumed, and the system is assumed large compared with a collisional mean free pa… more

Optical imaging diagnostics for fusion plasmas

Description: Imaging diagnostics are used for spatially/emdash/and temporally/emdash/resolved quantitative measurements of plasma properties such as the ionization particle source, particle and energy loss, and impurity radiation in magnetically confined fusion plasmas. Diagnostics equipped with multi-element solid-state detectors (often with image intensifiers) are well suited to the environment of large fusion machines with high magnetic field and x-ray and neutron fluxes. We have both conventional (16msf… more

Design studies of a laser fusion power plant

Description: The conceptual design of a laser fusion power plant has been undertaken to exploit recent developments in target design. Advanced high-gain targets which have been developed make it possible to significantly relax the laser and optical system requirements. The power plant design features a reactor concept which utilizes a thick falling region of liquid lithium to protect the first-wall from the neutrons, x-rays, and charged particles that are produced in the thermonuclear microexplosion. The li… more

Requirements and new materials for fusion laser systems

Description: Higher focusable power in neodymium glass fusion lasers can be obtained through the use of new materials with lower nonlinear index (n/sub 2/) and better energy storage capabilities than the presently employed silicate glass. Silicate, phosphate, fluorophosphate, and beryllium fluoride glasses are discussed in terms of fusion laser requirements, particularly those for the proposed Nova laser. Examples of the variation in spectroscopic and optical properties obtainable with compositional changes… more

Phase Transformations in Alumina. Technical Report, May to December 1961

Description: e transformation studies showed that synthetic aluminas produced in the laboratory were not transformed to alpha alumina at 400 to 700' deg n the presence of nitric acid and water vapor. Amorphous aluminn produced in the pilot plant was transformed to alpha alumina. This indicated that the amorphous alumina produced in the pilot plant is structurally predisposed to form alpha alumina. Most additives did not appear to have any special effects. Lithium formed zeta alumina, LiAl/sub 5/O/sub 8/. Ph… more

Evaluation of solar mirror figure by moire contouring

Description: Moire topography is applied to the figure assessment of solar mirrors. The technique is demonstrated on component facets of a six-meter diameter, four-meter focal length, parabolic dish collector. The relative ease of experimental implementation and subsequent data analysis suggests distinct advantages over the more established laser ray trace or BCS/ICS technique for many applications. The theoretical and experimental considerations necessary to fully implement moire topography on mirror surfa… more
