Studies of the /sup 32/S + /sup 182/W reaction

Description: Fission-like products from the reaction /sup 32/S + /sup 182/W were measured over the entire angular range from theta = 10-170/sup 0/ and for bombarding energies of E/sub lab/ = 166, 177, 222, and 260 MeV using an array of eight Si detectors. From the measured energy and flight time the product mass was determined event-by-event by performing the appropriate corrections for the plasma delay and pulse height defect associated with Si detectors. The mass, angular, and total kinetic energy distrib… more

Study of heavy quark production with the Mark II at PEP

Description: The methods adopted by the Mark II collaboration to study heavy quark production at PEP are described. Two complementary techniques are used: D* tagging using the decay chain D*/sup +/. D/sup 0/..pi../sup +/, D/sup 0/ ..-->.. K/sup -/..pi../sup +/, and inclusive lepton tagging using the characteristic p/sub T/ distributions to distinguish contributions from b and c quarks. These techniques are used to derive information about heavy quark fragmentation and about the weak coupling of heavy quarks. more

Particle identification at an asymmetric B Factory

Description: Particle identification systems are an important component of any detector at a high-luminosity, asymmetric B Factory. In particular, excellent hadron identification is required to probe CP violation in B{sup 0} decays to CP eigenstates. The particle identification systems discussed below also provide help in separating leptons from hadrons at low momenta. We begin this chapter with a discussion of the physics motivation for providing particle identification, the inherent limitations due to int… more

Discovery of /sup 260/Md and the decay properties of /sup 258/Fm, /sup 258m,g/Md, and /sup 259/Md

Description: We have discovered a new neutron-rich isotope, /sup 260/Md, from /sup 18/O and /sup 22/Ne bombardments of /sup 254/Es. We observed a spontaneous-fission (SF) activity with a 32-day half-life in electromagnetically separated mass-260 fractions from these bombardments and we have measured the mass and kinetic energy distributions of this SF activity. The mass distribution was symmetric with the principal energy peak at 234-MeV total kinetic energy (TKE), similar to previous observations for heavy… more

Summary of S = 0 dibaryon resonances and candidates

Description: Experimental data concerning S = O dibaryon resonances are reviewed, with an emphasis on the nucleon-nucelon system. Structures observed in the ..gamma..d channel, the ..pi..d elastic scattering, pp ..-->.. ..pi..d channel, and other channels are discussed. Experimental data are compared with various theories. The short-range forces can be represented by dibaryon resonances. Further measurements to clarify the understanding of dibaryons are also discussed. 53 refs., 24 figs.

A measurement of the Z boson resonance parameters at the SLC (Stanford Linear Center)

Description: We have measured the resonance parameters of the Z boson using 480 hadronic and Leptonic Z decays collected by the Mark II Detector at the Stanford Linear Collider. We find the Mass to be 91.14 {+-} 0.12 GeV/c{sup 2}, and the width to be 2.42{sup +0.45}{sub {minus}0.35} GeV. If we constrain the visible width to its Standard Model value, we find a partial width to invisible decay modes corresponding to 2.8 {+-} 0.6 neutrino species with a 95% confidence level limit of 3.9. 9 refs., 1 fig., 4 tab… more

Pyrolysis mechanisms. Quarterly report, April-June 1981

Description: The data acquisition system for fast pyrolysis studies is summarized and discussed, based on preliminary applications to fast scans and peak switching of the quadrupole mass spectrometer. The free-jet expansion phenomena of internal-state cooling and clustering are discussed in terms of their relevance to pyrolysis product sampling interpretation. Primary pyrolysis spectra are shown for cotton, wood, and steam-exploded extracted lignin. Both pulsed and steady-state pyrolysis were used to observ… more

Influence of quasi-elastic channels on fusion

Description: Experiments that measure the strength of different transfer reactions in heavy reaction systems at energies in the vicinity of the Coulomb barrier are discussed. A short discussion is given of experimental techniques that are available in this field and their advantages and shortfalls. The main features of the transfer reactions are summarized. Questions concerning the system dependence and energy dependence of the strongest reaction channels are addressed. A systematic picture of the strength … more

Identifying heavy Higgs bosons

Description: Two techniques for identifying heavy Higgs bosons produced at SSC energies are discussed. In the first, the Higgs boson decays into ZZ, with one Z decaying into an e-pair or ..mu..-pair and the other into a neutrino pair. In the second, the production of the Higgs boson by WW fusion is tagged by detecting the quarks that produced the bremsstrahlung virtual W's. The associated Higgs decay is identified by one leptonic and one hadronic decay. Both methods appear capable of finding a heavy Higgs b… more

Vector mesons ({rho}{sup 0}, K{sup *} and {phi}) with 0, 1 and 2 strange quarks are used to obtain redundant measures of strange-quark suppression and of the vector to pseudoscalar ratio in hadronization. Glueballs in the reaction. pi. /sup -/p. -->. phi phi n at 22 GeV/c

Description: The current favorite candidate theory of strong interactions is Quantum Chromodynamics. In this theory, bound states of two or more gluons, called glueballs, must exist. Experimentally, the detection of glueballs (all of which are massive enough to decay quickly to ordinary q anti q hadrons) is complicated by the lack of any explicit signature. The calculation of the mass of the low-lying glueballs by lattice gauge methods and the MIT bag model at present give only a rough guide to experimental… more

Jets in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation

Description: The properties of jets produced in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation have been investigated using data taken with the Mark 1 detector at SPEAR. The momentum distributions parallel and perpendicular to the jet axis were measured for all charged tracks, for K/sup 0/'s, and for rho/sup 0/'s. The K/sup 0/ and rho/sup 0/ Pt/sup 2/ distributions are well fit by the form dn/dPt/sup 2/ = A exp(-B/sup +/ Pt/sup 2/) with B = 4.6 +/- 0.2 for K/sup 0/'s and 5 +/- 1 for rho/sup 0/'s.
