Ion-optical studies for improved ion transmission in multistage isotope-ratio mass spectrometers

Description: Theoretical and experimental ion-optical studies of multistage isotope-ratio mass spectrometers were conducted to determine what improvement in ion transmission efficiency might be attainable through design changes. The computer program GIOS (General Ion Optical Systems) was used to perform theoretical calculations of focusing properties and ion transmission efficiency. Actual transmission through multiple-sector instruments was determined from measurements of the ion beam vertical profile at t… more

Advanced photovoltaic concentrator system low-cost prototype module

Description: This report describes the continued development of an extruded lens and the development of a PV receiver, both of which will be used in the Solar Engineering Applications Corporation (SEA) 10X concentrator. These efforts were pare of a pre-Concentrator Initiative Program. The 10X concentrator consists of an inexpensive, extruded linear Fresnel lens which focuses on one-sun cells which are adhesive-bonded to an anodized aluminum heat sink. Module sides are planned to be molded along with the len… more

Nonequilibrium Ionization in Magnetohydrodynamic Generators

Description: The steady state ionization of a gas in which the electrons are hot and the atoms cool is investigated. The rate equations governing ionization, excitation, recombination, and de-excitation are solved for a model system using rate coefficients appropriate to the Cs atom. Included are all processes involving free electrons as well as spontaneous emission and resonance trapping of radiation. No incoming radiation is assumed, and the system is assumed large compared with a collisional mean free pa… more

Broadband diffractive lens

Description: Significant progress has been made toward solving the century-old problem of chromatic aberrations in diffractive optics. Our approach exploits modern materials and microfabrication technology and is very different from the purely diffractive strategy,'' which is commonly employed and which results in multiple diffractive elements separated by a finite distance. We have developed a Fresnel zone plate lens comprised of a serial stack of patterned minus-filters which allows broadband radiation to… more

Telescopic zoom lens attachment for magnified views in underwater radiation environments

Description: This document consists of the notes that accompany a slide presentation (15 slides). The discussion begins with the need for the Telescopic Zoom Lens or TZL; why is was designed and fabricated as well as the design restraints that dictated its final form and function. Next is the use and modification of existing equipment; equipment that was used to remotely scan a nuclear reactor tank using eddy current and ultrasound. The uniqueness of the TZL mechanism itself is discussed; how it meets the d… more

Design desiderata for a laminar flow quadrupole-focused acceleration column

Description: The Pierce design acceleration column has been widely used to accelerate high current beams. It operates well in the space charge limited condition, and will produce beams with a temperature comparable with that of the source. It is restricted in current density, however, by the Child-Langmuir relation. If the ion source itself is not the limiting constraint, then the achievable current density is limited by the electric field at which sparking occurs. One sees clearly that the achievable curre… more

Hybrid charged-particle guide for studying (n, charged particle) reactions

Description: Charged-particle transport systems consisting of magnetic quadrupole lenses have been employed in recent years in the study of (n, charged particle) reactions. We have completed a new transport system that is based both on magnetic lenses as well as electrostatic fields. The magnetic focusing of this charged-particle guide is provided by six magnetic quadrupole lenses arranged in a CDCCDC sequence (in the vertical plane). The electrostatic field is produced by a wire at high voltage which stret… more

Transportable charge in a periodic alternating gradient system

Description: A simple set of formulas is derived which relate emittance, line charge density, matched maximum and average envelope radii, occupancy factors, and the (space charge) depressed and vacuum values of tune. This formulation is an improvement on the smooth limit approximation; deviations from exact (numerically determined) relations are on the order of +-2%, while the smooth limit values are in error by up to +-30%. This transport formalism is used to determine the limits of transportable line char… more

Polymers in solar technologies: an R and D strategy

Description: The use of polymers can increase the cost-effectiveness of solar technologies. The potential impact of polymers may be enhanced earlier if R and D is carried out according to a plan. The purpose of this plan is to present a five-year program consisting of 20 tasks categorized into six major problem areas: response to combined stresses; photochemistry; permeability/adhesion; surface properties; mechanical properties; and development of polymers. A budget required for each task is estimated and s… more

Description: Fresnel zone plate patterns, free of spherical abberation, with diameters of up to 0.63 mm and linewidths as small as 1000 A were fabricated on polyimide-membrane x-ray masks using scanning electron beam lithography Distortion of the electron beam scan raster was reduced to < 2500 A over a 2 mm x 2 mm field by applying deflection corrections, while viewing the distortion using a moire method. C/sub k/ x-ray lithography was used to replicate the zone plate pattern in thick PMMA over a 100 A thic… more

Survey mirrors and lenses and their required surface accuracy. Semiannual technical progress report, September 15, 1978-April 15, 1979

Description: Since the beginning of widespread research and development for solar energy, a major concern has been the effect of optical and surface quality of collector materials on collector performance and the changes in these properties due to environmental conditions. In many instances, this type of data has not been compiled. When data is available on surface quality, mirror or lens optical characteristics, surface deformations due to stress and other errors, it is difficult to quantify the effect the… more
