Scintillation properties of lead sulfate

Description: We report on the scintillation properties of lead sulfate (PbSO{sub 4}), a scintillator that show promise as a high energy photon detector. It physical properties are well suited for gamma detection, as its has a density of 6.4 gm/cm{sup 3}, a 1/e attenuation length for 511 keV photons of 1.2 cm, is not affected by air or moisture, and is cut and polished easily. In 99.998% pure PbSO{sub 4} crystals at room temperature excited by 511 keV annihilation photons, the fluorescence decay lifetime con… more

Post-test analysis of 3ET205 module LC03TL12 from chloride motive power

Description: ANL`s analysis and Diagnostics Laboratory conducted a Simplified Federal Urban Driving Schedule (SFUDS) life evaluation on a 3ET205 lead-acid module from Chloride Motive Power in England. Like other 3ET205 modules, module LC03TL12 consisted of three cells with tubular positive electrodes as the primary design feature. Testing began with an abbreviated performance characterization of 28 cycles. The module achieved a specific energy of 34.6 Wh/kg for 3-h discharges and a 30-s peak power of 90 W/k… more

The Distribution of Precious Metals in Various Residues Obtained in the Preparation of Uranyl Nitrate From Pitchblende

Description: A study was made of the distribution of Ag, Au, Bt, and Pd in the residues from an extraction process in which purified UO/sub 2/(NO/sub 3/)/sub 2/ is prepared from a pitchblende ore. The residues studied were the gangue Pb cake, the BaSO/sub 4/ cake, the filtrate boildown cake, the raffinate cake, and the purified UO/sub 2/(NO/sub 3/)/sub 2/. Samples representing three different batches of ore were used. The following conclusions were reached: (1) neither Ag nor Pd are present in the ore in si… more

X-Ray Powder Diffraction Study of Synthetic Palmierite, K{sub 2}Pb(SO{sub 4}){sub 2}

Description: Palmierite (K{sub 2}Pb(SO{sub 4}){sub 2}) has been prepared via a chemical synthesis method. Intensity differences were observed when X-ray powder data from the newly synthesized compound were compared to the published powder diffraction card (PDF) 29-1015 for Palmierite. Investigation of these differences indicated the possibility of preferred orientation and/or chemical inhomogeneity affecting intensities, particularly those of the basal (00{ell}) reflections. Annealing of the Palmierite was … more

Formation of Pyromorphite in Anglesite-Hydroxyapatite Suspensions Under Varying pH Conditions

Description: Addition of phosphate to lead [Pb(ll)l-cOntarninated soil to immobilize soil Pb by formation of pyromorphite has been proposed as an alternative remediation technique. Lead sulfate (PbS04, anglesite), a Pb-bearing form found in contaminated soils and wastes, was reacted with a synthetic phosphate mineral, hydroxyapa$te [Ca5(PO& OH], under constant pH (PH 2-7) and simulated gastric pH conditions (PH varied from 2 to 7 within 30 rein) to assess the effects of reaction kinetics on the formation ra… more
