Long-term safety issues associated with mixer pump operation

Description: In this report, we examine several long-term issues: the effect of pump operation on future gas release events (GREs), uncontrolled chemical reactions, chronic toxic gas releases, foaming, and erosion and corrosion. Study of selected off-gases produced during the immobilization of nuclear wastes in the SYNROC process. Final report for the year ended December 31, 1982

Description: The vaporization of cesium from the SYNROC mineral barium-cesium hollandite was studied over the temperature range 900/sup 0/C to 1150/sup 0/C using the transpiration method. With a dry argon-5% hydrogen carrier gas, the pressure of cesium over barium-cesium hollandite solid solution follows the relationship, log P/sub Cs/(atm) = 2.743 - 1.135 X 10/sup 4//T(K). The heat of vaporization is 217 +- 15 kJ/mole. The presence of water vapor increased the volatility of cesium.

Benefits and impacts of multi-level emission standards on the fuel economy characteristics of small and large cars

Description: A brief review of the small car vs large car fuel economy and emission scenario was conducted to determine whether it is meaningful to implement multi-level emission regulations (different values for small and large cars) to encourage or forces the use of catalytic converters on smaller cars, and by so doing improve the overall fuel economy of the total fleet while at the same time reduce overall emissions. Landfill CH{sub 4}: Rates, fates, and role in global carbon cycle

Description: Published estimates for worldwide landfill methane emissions range from 9 to 70 Tg yr{sup {minus}1}. Field and laboratory studies suggest that maximum methane yields from lanfilled refuse are about 0.06 to 0.09 m{sup 3} (dry Kg){sup {minus}1} refuse, depending on moisture content and other variables, such as organic loading, buffering capacity, and nutrients in landfill microevnironments. A comparison of the WIND System atmospheric models and RASCAL

Description: A detailed comparison of the characteristics of the WIND System atmospheric models and the NRC`s RASCAL code was made. The modeling systems differ substantially in the way input is entered and the way output is displayed. The solvent absorption-extractive distillation (SAED) process for ethanol recovery from gas/vapor streams

Description: A low energy system for ethanol recovery and dehydration has been developed. This system utilizes a solvent for (1) absorption of ethanol vapors, and then the same solvent for (2) extractive distillation.
