Computer program SCAP-BR for gamma-ray streaming through multi-legged ducts

Description: A computer program, SCAP-BR, has been developed at Burns and Roe for the gamma-ray streaming analysis through multi-legged ducts. SCAP-BR is a modified version of the single scattering code, SCAP, incorporating capabilities of handling multiple scattering and volumetric source geometries. It utilizes the point kernel integration method to calculate both the line-of-sight and scattered gamma dose rates by employing the ray tracing technique through complex shield geometries. The multiple scatter… more

The Measurement of Energy and Intensity of Gamma Rays by Use of a Scintillation Spectrometer

Description: The analysis of gamma-ray spectra measured with a scintillation counter with an anticoincidence annulus is described in detail. In particular the problem of the determination of the energy and intensity of gamma rays from such measurements is considered. The shapes of the full-energy peaks in observed complex spectra are studied and an attempt is made to justify their description in terms of a Gaussian response function. The details of the statistical analysis of complex gamma-ray spectra are g… more

Photodisintegration of /sup 3/H and /sup 3/He. [Threshold to 25 MeV]

Description: The photoneutron cross sections for /sup 3/H and /sup 3/He have been measured from threshold to approx. 25 MeV with monoenergetic photons from the annihilation in flight of fast positrons at the LLL Electron-Positron Linear Accelerator facility. These reactions include the two-body breakup of /sup 3/H and the three-body breakup of both /sup 3/H and /sup 3/He; these measurements for /sup 3/H are the first to span the energy region across the peaks of the cross sections. An efficient BF/sub 3/-tu… more

In Vivo Gamma Lung Measurements--a Mathematical Model

Description: A low-background facility is described for rneasuring lung burdens of U, Th, and other nuclides in vivo. Problems associated with this method of radiation measurement are discussed. A mathennatical, computer-oriented simulation was devised to gain insight into the relation of the net observed radiation spectrum to the burden of radioactivity in the body or its organs. Chest cavities for persons of three sizes were synthesized in a three-coordinate space comprised of one-inch cubes and including… more

TRITOX: a multiple parameter evaluation of tritium toxicity

Description: The increased use of nuclear reactors for power generation will lead to the introduction of tritium into the environment. The need for assessing possible immediate and long-term effects of exposure to this tritium led to the development of a broad program directed towards evaluating the possible somatic and genetic effects of continuous exposure to tritiated water (HTO). Among the parameters measured are the genetic, cytogenetic, reproductive efficiency, growth, nonspecific lifetime shortening,… more

Methods and techniques of NDA (nondestructive assay)

Description: Nondestructive assay (NDA) refers to techniques and instruments developed to measure nuclear materials in the many forms in which they occur throughout the fuel cycle. These techniques were first developed to support nuclear safeguards inspections and nuclear material accountability; they are also used extensively for process and quality control. Most accountability measurements are based on analytical chemistry and require that a sample be drawn and analyzed destructively. Destructive analysis… more

STUDIES OF THE SCINTILLATION PROCESS IN CsI(Tl)

Description: The scintillation response of CsI(Tl) crystals, having various thallium contents, was measured for excitation of the crystals by monoenergetic gamma rays, protons, and alpha particles. The investi gation was made to provide a test of some of the features of a theoretical model of the scintillation process in thallium-activated alkali iodides proposed by Murray and Meyer. In order to insure that the results obtained in this program would provide a critical test of the scintillation model, specia… more
