RAPID SEPARATION METHOD FOR ACTINIDES IN EMERGENCY SOIL SAMPLES

Description: A new rapid method for the determination of actinides in soil and sediment samples has been developed at the Savannah River Site Environmental Lab (Aiken, SC, USA) that can be used for samples up to 2 grams in emergency response situations. The actinides in soil method utilizes a rapid sodium hydroxide fusion method, a lanthanum fluoride soil matrix removal step, and a streamlined column separation process with stacked TEVA, TRU and DGA Resin cartridges. Lanthanum was separated rapidly and effe… more

Strategic Design and Optimization of Inorganic Sorbents for Cesium, Strontium and Actinides

Description: The primary objective of the Notre Dame component of the project was computational in nature. The goal was to provide a design tool for the synthesis of optimized sorbents for the removal of cesium, strontium and actinides from nuclear waste solutions. Molecular modeling enables us to observe and better understand the molecular level interactions that govern the selectivity of specific radionuclides in a particular sorbent. The research focused on the development and validation of a suitable an… more

Radionuclide Partitioning in an Underground Nuclear Test Cavity

Description: In 2004, a borehole was drilled into the 1983 Chancellor underground nuclear test cavity to investigate the distribution of radionuclides within the cavity. Sidewall core samples were collected from a range of depths within the re-entry hole and two sidetrack holes. Upon completion of drilling, casing was installed and a submersible pump was used to collect groundwater samples. Test debris and groundwater samples were analyzed for a variety of radionuclides including the fission products {sup 9… more

Acquisition of Single Crystal Growth and Characterization Equipment

Description: Final Report for DOE Grant No. DE-FG02-04ER46178 'Acquisition of Single Crystal Growth and Characterization Equipment'. There is growing concern in the condensed matter community that the need for quality crystal growth and materials preparation laboratories is not being met in the United States. It has been suggested that there are too many researchers performing measurements on too few materials. As a result, many user facilities are not being used optimally. The number of proficient crystal … more

The Surrogate Method: Past, Present and Future

Description: The STARS/LiBerACE collaboration has been exploring the surrogate technique with success in the actinide region. This method uses a direct reaction to measure the decay probability of the same compound nucleus produced via a neutron-induced channel. This paper serves as an overview of these activities. Using the STARS array at 88-inch Cyclotron at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory we have explored the following surrogate reactions: {sup 234}U({alpha}, {alpha}{prime}f), {sup 235}U({sup 3}He,… more

Characterization of a mixed salt of 1-hydroxy-pyridin-2-one Pu(IV)complexes

Description: Most expert analyses of the projected world energy needs show utilization of nuclear energy will be essential for the next few decades, and hence the need to support this technology grows. But as one measure of the supporting science base of this field, as of December 2006, only 25 Pu containing structures were in the Cambridge Structural Database, as compared to 21,807 for Fe. A comparison of the rate of addition to this knowledge base reveals that approximately 500 Fe structures are registere… more

Radioanalytical Chemistry for Automated Nuclear Waste Process Monitoring

Description: This research program is directed toward rapid, sensitive, and selective determination of beta and alpha-emitting radionuclides such as 99Tc, 90Sr, and trans-uranium (TRU) elements in low activity waste (LAW) processing streams. The overall technical approach is based on automated radiochemical measurement principles. Nuclear waste process streams are particularly challenging for rapid analytical methods due to the complex, high- ionic-strength, caustic brine sample matrix, the presence of inte… more

Chemical aspects of actinides in the geosphere: towards a rational nuclear materials management

Description: A complete understanding of actinide interactions in the geosphere is paramount for developing a rational Nuclear and Environmental Materials Management Policy. One of the key challenges towards understanding the fate and transport of actinides is determining their speciation (i.e., oxidation state and structure). Since an element's speciation directly dictates physical properties such as toxicity and solubility, this information is critical for evaluating and controlling the evolution of an ac… more

Uranium in the Savannah River Site environment

Description: The purpose of this report is to consolidate the history of environmental uranium studies conducted by SRS and to describe the status of uranium in the environment. The report is intended to be a living document'' that will be updated periodically. This draft issue, February 1992, documents studies that occurred from 1954 to 1989. Data in this report are taken primarily from annual and semiannual environmental reports for SRS. Semiannual reports were published from 1954 through 1962. Annual rep… more

Steam explosion analysis in support of the SRS reactor safety assessment

Description: This report describes the application of two steam explosion models in support of the Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) for the Savannah River Reactors. Theoretical models are required to estimate steam explosion yields in terms of kinetic energy, pressure shock and steam generated by the event. These quantities are used in the PRA to determine fission product barrier integrity in the reactor confinement following a hypothetical steam explosion. The basic preconditions for a steam explosion a… more

Evaluation of filter media for clarification of partially dissolved residues containing plutonium

Description: A common process in the chemical industry employs the leaching of a desirable component from an insoluble substrate, followed by filtration to produce a clarified solution of the desirable component and a discardable residue. The work described here involved evaluating sintered metal filter media for separating dissolved plutonium from undissolved residues generated at various locations owned by the Department of Energy throughout the United States. The work was performed during a six-week assi… more

Radiation transmission measurements on a small warm ion chamber

Description: Measurements were made on a small warm ion chamber (WIC) to determine if high energy neutrons travelling up the gaps of the SLD end plates may pose a problem during an accident. Measurement results are given through gaps, through the WIC body thickness. Photon and neutron penetration through end caps and the main body of the WIC are then extrapolated to apply to the SLD. Beta-delayed fission calculations for the astrophysical r-process

Description: We discuss RPA calculations of the Gamow-Teller properties of neutron-rich nuclei to study the effect of ..beta..-delayed fission and neutron emission on the production of Th, U and Pu chronometric nuclei in the astrophysical r-process. We find significant differences in the amount of ..beta..-delayed fission when compared with the recent calculations of Thielemann et al. (1983). In the simplest case of a constant abundance along the r-process path, however, the inferred production ratios in bo… more

Personnel neutron dosimetry studies at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

Description: A study was conducted to determine the effect of phantom size, shape and composition on the response of an albedo neutron dosimeter. The most important feature was the shape. The dose equivalent rate from a californium neutron source was determined. Ten different dose rates were determined which varied from 2.39 to 3.02 rem/h for the CF source used. (ACR)

Computerized mathematical model for the anion exchange processing of plutonium(IV)

Description: A computerized mathematical model for anion exchange processing of plutonium(IV) was adopted from a previously written code. The model was verified to predict, within +-30 percent, a profile of plutonium breakthrough for the sorption process on Dowex 1-X4 anion exchange resin. The program was modified to incorporate column washing and elution logic. Experimental washing and elution data were in satisfactory agreement with predicted data. Provisions for changing the flow rate during the course o… more

Is plutonium really necessary

Description: Not all activities associated with nuclear power contribute equally to proliferation potential, but some fuel-cycle activities (i.e., reprocessing) are considered too dangerous to be permitted in non-weapons countries. This paper assesses the feasibility of keeping Pu out of the nuclear fuel cycle. It is pointed out that there is no technical necessity of using Pu as nuclear fuel so long as /sup 235/U is available. Analysis of the economics of recycling spent fuel products in LWRs in the U.S. s… more
