Strange particle production in neutrino-neon charged current interactions

Description: Neutral strange particle production in charged-current muon-neutrino interactions have been studied in the Fermilab 15-foot neon bubble chamber. Associated production is expected to be the major source of strange particles in charged-current neutrino interactions. sigma-neutral and xi-minus production by neutrinos was observed. The dependence on various leptonic and hadronic variables is investigated. A fit to single and associated production of s, s/anti-s, and c quarks is described based on t… more

Experimental high temperature coefficients of compressibility and expansivity of liquid sodium and other related properties

Description: The subcooled compressibility of liquid sodium was directly measured up to 200 atm between 900 K and 1867 K, utilizing a new multi-property apparatus which was previously tested with water. The experimental data were correlated by a 6-term equation with a standard deviation of 9.2 percent. The equation can be used to estimate the subcooled compressibilities and densities of liquid sodium up to 2300 K and 500 ata. The thermal expansion of liquid sodium was also measured along the isobars 1 ata, … more

Proton microprobe analysis of zinc in skeletal tissues. [Proton induced x-ray emission analysis]

Description: A proton microprobe with windowless exit port was used to study zinc distributions in various types of skeletal tissues. The use of an external beam facilitated positioning of the targets for examination of particular points of interest. The proton microprobe is uniquely suited to this work since it combines high sensitivity for zinc determinations in thick samples with good spatial resolution. Measurements on rat and rabbit Achilles tendon showed a significant increase in zinc concentrations a… more

Towards a quantitative approach to the utilization of magnetic effects as a means of isotopic enrichment

Description: The photolysis of methyldesoxybenzoin in sodium dodecyl sulfate micellar solutions, produces benzaldehyde and styrene as disproportionation products of the triplet geminate radical pair. We have found that both the benzaldehyde and the recovered methyldeoxybenzoin are enriched in 13-C. These results provide the first direct evidence that both recombination and disproportionation are identically selective to the magnetic isotope effect, an important point anticipated by theory, but previously un… more

(Ion temperature gradient instability and transport: Progress report)

Description: Anomalous ion thermal conductivity remains in open physics issue for the present generation of high temperature Tokamaks. It is now believed to be due to the Ion Temperature Gradient (ITG or n{sub i}) instability. The production and identification of this instability is being studied in the simpler and experimentally convenient configuration of the steady state Columbia Linear Machine (CLM). The slab branch of this instability has been produced (by two different heating methods), identified and… more

Limits on likesign dilepton production in nu/sub. mu. / interactions

Description: We have searched for the production of likesign dilepton events (nu/sub ..mu../ + Ne ..-->.. ..mu../sup -/ + e/sup -/ + ...) in a wideband neutrino beam at FNAL using the 15' bubble chamber. We observe no signal above the background arising from conventional sources. We set 90% confidence level upper limits for the production rates of (nu/sub ..mu../ + Ne ..-->.. ..mu../sup -/ + e/sup -/ + ...)/(nu/sub ..mu../ + Ne ..-->.. ..mu../sup -/ + ...) less than or equal to 8 * 10/sup -5/ and (nu/sub ..… more

The impact of changing land use, nitrate deposition and CO sub 2 fertilization on soil carbon storage

Description: This research strives to assess the impact of changing land use, nitrate deposition and CO{sub 2} fertilization on soil carbon storage. Our motivation is that this reservoir is the most likely candidate for the so-called missing carbon sink. We are working on several aspects of this problem by measuring carbon content, nitrogen content and radiocarbon ratios in paired soil samples from neighboring sites, to determine the impact of land use on soil carbon inventories and turnover times. We are a… more

Measurement of Same-Sign Dimuon Production in High-Energy Neutrino Interactions

Description: We present rates for same-sign dimuon production in neutrino-iron interactions with energies of 30 to 600 GeV. We find 101 neutrino and 15 anti-neutrino induced same-sign dimuons with muon momenta above 9 GeV/c. A detailed calculation indicates that the overall level and kinematic distributions of conventional backgrounds are consistent with the data. There is no convincing indication of new physical processes. 16 refs., 11 figs., 1 tab.
