Shear Lag in a Plywood Sheet-Stringer Combination Used for the Chord Member of a Box Beam

Description: "Theoretical and experimental investigations were made of the distribution of strains in a plywood sheet-stringer combination used as the chord member of a box beam acted upon by bending loads. The theoretical solution was obtained with the help of the principle of minimum potential energy and certain simplifying assumptions. Strain measurements were made on a build-up box beam by means of electrical-resistance strain gages connected with strain indicators" (p. 1).

A New Method For Determining SO2 in Air

Description: In connection with the enormous development of the chemical and copper smelting industries which had occurred in the Urals the Institute was often faced with questions involving the determination of SO2 in air inside and outside of the factories. The author used the catalytic action of NhSo4 for the quantitative determination of SO2 in air.

A Spectroscopic Study of Ions in the Positive Column of the Glow Discharge

Description: Previous observations by the authors on the radiation emitted by argon ions in the positive column of the glow discharge at high current have been extended to the radiation of neon ions. As the discharge current is increased, the difference between the energy of the atoms and the ions decreases, the velocity distribution function of the ions is markedly asymmetrical, there being a preferred direction of motion paralled to the direction of the electric field

A proposal to study small angle p -p scattering at very high energies

Description: We propose to measure small angle p-p scattering by using a thin foil and a hydrogen jet target to intercept a small fraction of the beam without interference with the acceleration process. The measurements are based on the detection of the slow recoil proton and will yield the energy dependence of (a) the slope of the p-p nuclear diffraction peak, (b) the real part of the nuclear scattering amplitude, (c) the diffractive excitation of isobars. The proposed technique is energy independent and w… more

Analysis of the interaction K$sup -$p $Yields$ $Sigma$$sup 0$$pi$$sup 0$ in the 1575 to 1750 MeV region

Description: From 2nd internationnl conference on elementary particles; Aix-en- Provence, France (6 Sep 1973). A formation type experiment made in a heavy liquid bubble chamber for the channel K/sup -/p yields SIGMA /sup o/ pi /sup o/ in the 1575 to 1750 M eV cm energy range is considered. From the results containing ~2/3 of the statistics, essentially the total and differential cross sections for this channel are presented and compared with the results of a hydrogen BC experiment made by a CHS collaboratio… more

Differential cross sections and scaling in $pi$$sup -$p $Yields$ X$sup -$p at 25 and 40 GeV/c

Description: From second international conference on elementary particles; Aix-en- Provence, France (6 Sep 1973). The reaction pi /sup -/p yields X/sup -/p was investigated at P/sup inc/ = 25 and 40 GeV/c at the Serpuknov Accelerator. The differential inelastic cross sections DELTA /sup 2/ sigma // DELTA t DELTA M/sup 2/ are presented as a function of s, t, and M/sup 2/ (X/sup -/). The scaling hypothesis was tested. (auth)

K$sup -$p $Yields$ $lambda$$sup 0$$pi$$sup 0$$pi$$sup 0$ and K$sup -$p $Yields$ $Sigma$$sup 0$$pi$$sup 0$$pi$$sup 0$ formation in the 1570 to 1750 MeV c.m. region

Description: From 2nd international conference on elementary particles; Aix-en- Provence, France (6 Sep 1973). The results of an expcriment designed to study the K/sup -/p yields LAMBDA /sup o/ i/sup o/ pi /sup o/ and K/sup -/p yields SIGMA /sup o/ pi /sup o/ pi /sup o/ formation channels in a heavy l iquid bubble chamber are reported. These channels are impossible to observe directly by the hydrogen bubble chamber technique. Reaction cross sections for the two channels are presented. A comparison is made w… more

K$sup -$p $Yields$ $Sigma$$sup 0$$pi$$sup 0$ cross section between 1575 and 1710-MeV cm energy range with detection of gammas

Description: From conference on baryon resonances; West Lafayette, Indiana, USA (20 Apr 1973). A study was made, with good gamma detection, of the individual channels that contribute to the reactions K/sup -/p yields LAMBDA neutrals in the K/sup -/ momentum range from 525 to 820 MeV/c. The SIGMA /sup o/ pi /sup o/ cross se ction is considered which is difficult to obtain without gamma detection (e.g. in a H/sub 2/ bubble chamber). Only events with all decay gammas detected are used for analysis. The results… more

Reaction $pi$$sup -$p$Yields$$pi$$sup -$$pi$$sup -$$pi$$sup +$p at 25 and 40 GeV/c

Description: The reaction pi /sup -/p yields pi /sup -/ pi /sup -/ pi /sup +/p was measured at 25 and 40 GeV/c at the Serpuknov Proton Accelerator. The production cross section as a function of beam energy, momentum transfer, and 3 pi mass is presented, and results of the partial-wave analysis of the 3 pi system are discussed. (auth)

A$sub 1$, A$sub 2$, and A$sub 3$ production in $pi$$sup -$p $Yields$ $pi$$sup -$$pi$$sup -$$pi$$sup +$p at 25 and 40 GeV/c

Description: A sample of ~70,000 fitted events of the reaction pi /sup -/p yields pi /sup -/ i/sup -/ pi /sup +/p at 25 and 40 GeV/c was obtained with the CERN-WEP Boson Spectrometer at the Serpukhov Accelerator. A partial-wave analysis shows that: A/sub 1/ and A/sup 3/ cannot be described by a Breit--Wigner amplitude; the A/sub 2/ can be well described by a Breit--Wigner amplitude; although A/sup 1/, A/ sup 3/, and A/sup 2/ have different properties, the e nergy dependence of their production cross section… more

External Inputs and North Korea's Confrontation Policy: A Case Study of Linkage Politics

Description: In an inquiry into national behavior, students of international relations treat national data as independent variables. Students of comparative politics treat them as dependent variables in an attempt to compute foreign policy outputs. There is reason to believe that international and comparative studies can be incorporated into a system of linkage politics. This study employs the framework of "linkage politics" of James N. Rosenau in an attempt to investigate the North Korean confrontation pol… more
